    Who?

Benson...I might be dating myself with that reference...

There was a sitcom on TV in the late 70s to mid 80s called "Benson" where Benson DuBois(played by Robert Guillaume) started as a Butler/head of household for the governor and ended up running against his "boss" for governor in the final season of the show...

It was a pretty funny show, remember watching it with my parents several times growing up.

What is they story with Poona Ford? Is he injured? He was thought of as a really nice signing but hasn’t played much if at all.

Numbers really...they have quality Dlinemen and someone is going to have to sit, usually 1 interior and 1 edge guy...Ford will play, just has to wait his turn for a bit.

Grant Fuhr of the Sabres was an adequate goalie.  Hasek was way better than him regardless of what point in his career you are looking at.  And, for the Sabres portion of his career, Miller was better than Fuhr.

And the post that you're taking exception to was referring to one that said literally "(t)hat's why Levi is our Grant Fuhr (hopefully) ...".  Well "our Grant Fuhr" wasn't anything special and the post you took exception to was playing off of that phrasing.  But back to your subject, the assets that it cost to bring Fuhr in cost the Sabres the Stanley Cup in '93.  And it's because Muckler refused to see what was in front of him.  Heck, even with that horrible trade, if he's smart enough to play Hasek against Moe-ray-all instead of der Fuhr they very well might've won the SC.  But again, Muckler was too adamant in refusing to believe the results (which Hasek had had at every single level he ever played; he was at the top (not necessarily #1 in the IHL, but up there) of the GT ranks at every stop he had.

Goalies back in that timeframe basically put up numbers similar to UPL does now...high .890 save percentages and 3.5ish GAA's...

Weather in the Buffalo area has been great since May, IMO.

As a retiree, I measure how much time I can spend outside. I was always out doing things, due to clear weather most of the time. When I see what the rest of the country endures, I'm fine. Winters only bother me when we get the big storms..but only for a day or 2. I take winter vacations to warm spots to break up the pattern.

Uh...were you here in August when we had multiple days where it never reached 70?  Honestly September and October so far were much better.

  6. weather in WNY has been pretty stellar the last week with temps in the mid 70s then upper 70s and then 85 yesterday and today.

The bad news is Lake Erie water temperature is at an all-time record for this time of year at 70 degrees and is the first time it's ever been recorded at 70 or higher in October.

A very strong El Nino is supposed to help save us from a lot of snow due to unseasonable warmth during the winter, but if we get a cold spell in mid November lake snows could be brutal again...

To be clear, I think Cozens is a better player and has a higher ceiling.

I was mostly referring to my sense that a lot of Sabres fans don’t think they’re “in the same stratosphere” when the numbers last year said they kinda are.

Production-wise, Cozens was the 28th highest scoring centre in the league last year. Mitts was 45th - basically a great 2C and a good one. In terms of puck possession, Mitts had a 51.5% to Dylan’s 49.4%, so a little above average and a little below. Mitts also had better defensive analytics last year in the models Ive seen. Analytics show each has an elite trait: Cozens as an entry guy (96th percentile), Casey as a setup man (98th percentile).

Mitts seems to have finally found his role in terms of what he is best at doing and has started doing it more consistently.  This year could be an even bigger leap for him as I don't think he found that until midway through the season. Could be a 70-80 point player if he starts that from the beginning of the year.

In modern hockey a 200 foot game is important but speed and puck possession are more important.  Adding Benson to Thompson and Skinner is about driving puck possession.  Benson is a wizard with the puck on his stick.

The 200 foot game tends to evolve as the player matures.  We saw the light bulb go on for Mitts last year.  I expect TNT to be more attuned to that aspect of the game this season.  Cozens as well, but it takes time for the young guys to get to that point because they have thrived all their lives on offense alone.

I think the Sabres finally understand this which is why they added Clifton and Johnson.  This gives the Sabres a much more balanced D group with guys who play physical, play defense and block shots.

I think the Sabres philosophy about defense is to use puck possession to not only drive offense but to prevent opponent’s offense.  When that fails, let the physical d group and Levi prevent goals against.

The analogy I’d draw would be the Gretzky/Messier Oilers teams.  They came at you wave after wave and when things didn’t work they had Grant Fuhr covering up those mistakes.  Hopefully Levi becomes our Grant Fuhr.  I’d also point to the 05/06 Sabres that came at you with 4 lines the could score.

I’ll admit it’s not perfect, but given the talent we have this philosophy makes sense.

I’m also not really to worried about Benson making the team and even playing on the first line.  We added rookies JJP and Quinn last year and they helped make the team better.  I don’t see why Benson won’t as well despite his age and size.

While I agree teams may try to key on TnT’s line, but Sabres forward depth should punish teams that try it.  The Cozens line has a 28 goal scorer (VO), a 30+ goal scorer (DC) and a developing talent in JJP who put 28 goals in the A at 19.  Mitts’ line also has a 30+ guy in Tuch, a 40+ assist guy who can add 20 in Mitts and Greenway, who can chip in as well (and is a surprisingly good passer).

Benson also seems to instinctively know in a way that can't be taught how to influence a defender WITHOUT the puck on his stick which is one of the rarest qualities of all. Some of the highlight clips I watched prior to the draft showing things he did in games in this regard were almost magical.

Here are Sabres lines as Rochester also opens camp today.

Skinner-Thompson-Benson = I like it and think this could work

Peterka-Cozens-Olofsson = I think within a week they'll realize that you can't saddle Olofsson this high up.

Greenway-Mittelstadt-Tuch = This has a lot of potential but only if Mitts can replicate last years abilities.

Girgensons-Krebs-Okposo = Pretty much what we expected

Rousek-Jost-Biro = The island of misfit toys or first callups/subs

Murray-Kulich-Rosén = Eastbound and down... shortly

    Dahlin-Clifton = Yup

Power-Jokiharju = idk if I trust joker but donny does

    Samuelsson-E. Johnson = solid

    R. Johnson-Bryson = sorry little johnson

    Stillman-Clague = yupers

If I could swap in Savoie for Olofsson right now, I actually kinda like that forward lineup. Savoie has the speed to keep up with Cozens.

Skinner, Thompson and "The Butler" Benson... 😂

This team desperately needs to add size throughout their lineup.  I’d rather they take shots at late round projects than blowing firsts on size over skill.

I mean...seriously?  Are we still acting like this is the 2005 team with a bunch of small fast players?  This team is tied for the NHL's tallest team at 6'2" with a bunch of other teams and is 11th in terms of heaviest at 201 lbs, which is only 4 lbs from the 1st team, the Islanders and Caps at 205 lbs.  Is 4 lbs that much of a difference?  Can this false narrative please just go away and die a quick painful death?

Was any reason given? I was interested to see how he played with Mitts.

Granato kept calling him "Touch" in the morning skate, and Tuch kept warning him to stop and reminded him it's pronounced like 'tuck'... then Granato said "Ok...Ok...I'll stop." Then 5 minutes later he asked him "Hey, why don't you reach out and 'Touch' someone, Alex?" when he didn't finish a check along the boards. Skinner was rolling on the ice laughing and then Alex saw this and yelled "That's it! Oh, you think that's funny Donny?!?!?" and went Happy Gilmore on him...

Granato then scratched him tonight in response.

Somebody posted earlier about being excited about seeing how they lined up on Day 1, just to get a glimpse inside Donnie's mind.

Now you know what they say about the best-laid plans, but I think we did get a glimpse into what the coach is thinking.

    1) Dahlin/Clifton, Power/Jokiharju, Samuelsson/Johnson

I think this one probably caught most of us off-guard; don't recall many people thinking Clifton would be skating with the franchise and nobody was champing for more Owen and Henri.

But the more I looked at it, the more it becomes clear that Mule and Johnson is a clear D-zone pairing and OP/HJ is a clear O-zone pairing, with Ras and Clifton very comfortable going either way. To be clear, I suspect there is going to be a lot of mix and match with this group, Donnie said as much. But we are going to see a much more balanced rotation back there when healthy. And there's lot of utility there for matchups if he sticks with this as a base.

And of course there is the obvious L/R combinations. Maybe the opportunity for saying "i told you so" might even bring @Thorny back (hope so).

    2) Bryson/Stillman Ryan Johnson/Clague

There's your 4 spare defencemen, all battling with each other for one or 2 spots. Each is being given an equal opportunity, unsupported by a strong partner. May the best man/men win.

    3) Tage/Skinner, Cozens/Peterka, Mitts/Tuch

This, by far, was the most intriguing meatball Donnie gave us. I've been convinced Krebs was going to be the 3C and Mitts was going to get moved to the wing. Instead, it looks like the coach is considering 3 scoring lines built around 3 duos known to work well together. If the 3rd wheels step up, this could be exciting.

    4) Krebs Girgensons Okposo

Each of these guys got his own line, tied predominantly to AHL vets with outside roster shots. I'm reading this as Granato knowing exactly what he has in each of them, so he's using them to set the tone and test drive guys for the 13th forward and depth call-up roles. It makes me reasonably confident that the trio will be reunited come opening night as his go-to shutdown unit.

    5) Greenway Jost Olofsson

Here are your misfit toys, the trio who will definitely be on the starting roster – likely mixed and matched with the three top offensive duos above —  it's just not clear yet exactly where. They get to skate together to start with an equal opportunity and will get rotated into their eventual homes as camp progresses.

    6) Benson, Kulich Rosen

I honestly didn't see any of these guys on the roster to start the year, but goddamn are they apparently going to get a fair chance. Each one is apparently getting a real shot to replace Quinn in the lineup as they ride shotgun with the Sabres top offensive talents. Maybe one of them will actually take advantage and force his way in.

I'm very excited by what I'm seeing. What did you guys think?

It's the franchise and I'm shining now...
