Well yes, they won't win the cup that's a no brainer BUT where I'd disagree with you is in their desire to make the playoffs, to WIN NOW, as they rebuild rather than just saying oh it's a "development year" we have long term plans be patient.

He was a cheap available body to fill a hole while they have 3 guys on IR. At this deadline they upgraded their draft as a a whole and are trying to make the playoffs for this season, how can you find fault with that? Do you really want to argue that their rebuild has been less successful than ours this season? We SHOULD be WAY AHEAD of them but we are not. We are the clueless franchise, not them.

At the end of the day, talent wins out.  It may take a little longer, but we have far more talent coming thru the pipeline than they do.

Like the Bills in the mid 80s to late 80s...eventually all those HOF players they drafted just realized..."we are simply better than these other teams and we are going to kick your ass", and then they did. Sabres may not have any HOF players but they likely have a lot of really good ones.  Only a matter of time before they are simply better most nights than the teams they are playing.

Does this mean the Sabres will have 8 games in hand on all their division mates at US Thanksgiving next season, leading everyone to say, "Iit's OK... if we win all those games we're in a playoff spot?"

Yes, that means they can convince themselves it's fine to fall 20 points back in the standings off the bat because they will have "plenty of games" in hand to catch up.

My friend is a ticket broker, he moves the vast majority of his (I've used his tickets a few times this season).  But he also probably already has this license, so i doubt it would change anything.

Without the brokers they do have?  I'm not really sure how many STH's they would have.  It's a pretty bad scene, and its worse because the team is so bad.

The building will be packed once they start winning again.  That's how it works.

The next 3 games are Detroit, Islanders, Detroit with the Wings and Isles tied for the last East playoff spot with 72 points, 7 ahead of the Sabres.

A sweep of the 3 games would definitely put the Sabres in strong contention for a playoff spot.  I also believe that losing all 3 would pretty much end all hope.  4 ir 5 points would help, but these 3 games are a golden opportunity.

Coach Granato, please don’t start Comrie in goal for any of them.

Wings picked a bad time to go on a 5 game bender

Essentially the difference between us being the playoffs and not is once again, our inability to rack up loser points like so many other teams in the NHL seem to do with ease...Islanders have 14!!! OT/SO  losses this year.

Nope. Smart asset management by Philly showing you how to rebuild AND compete at the same time. Do not confuse the current Philly management with Cliff Fletcher.

Philly got Walker and his salary as a throw in salary dump last year, used him well and flipped him for a 1st rounder and then tossed a 4th away for a temp fill in while Seeler, Ristolainen and Drysdale are all injured because they are still in the hunt. So future and present at the same time. That, imo, is good management.

Their chance to win the cup is near 0.  They just gave away a pick for a dude who has been terrible that could have helped their bottom 1/3 of the NHL prospect pool get better.

I wrote in another thread that KA is bringing back nearly his entire roster next season.  It was a little tongue in cheek, but the Sabres are 7-3 in their last 10.  They have 21 games left.  If they continue that level of play the rest of the season they might challenge for a playoff spot by the end, thereby creating hopium, and giving KA the excuse to run it back one more time.

I don't think it is an excuse as much as this team has seemingly finally figured out how they need to play to be successful defensively and are starting to emerge as one of the best defensive teams in the NHL.  No real way to say otherwise with what they have been doing over the last 1/2 of their games played.

Their GAA/game has dropped from 3.56 prior to Jan 1st to 2.17 starting Jan 1st...that's 1.39 fewer goals allowed per game.  That's astounding.

  7. The issue with this team, in large part, IMO, is that for the first 3 months they didn't exactly know how to do what Granato wanted them to do in terms of playing more defense first, they weren't confident in it, and they seemingly lost confidence in themselves and their ability to play offensively while doing that.

It seems like they have figured out how to do it and use their team speed and team size and length to get their sticks in the way to break up passes in the defensive zone and then turn those into transition chances at speed now. Their team defense has improved more than I think anyone ever thought possible in a few months and they are now outstanding defensively and among the best in the NHL.  They have allowed the fewest goals since january 1st with 50 and are 2nd at 2.17 goals/game allowed over that point.  3rd in fewest shots allowed per game at 28.45.

It just seems like this team has finally realized who they are, found their identity, has their Mojo flowing and last night they just absolutely dominated the Knights for 85% of the game.

Now...the key will be to continue this and THEN not have it take 3 months to figure it out again like the last 2 years.

2 weeks of cold with a week of snow giving us 50 inches, and another 10 scattered over the rest of winter. Warmest winter on record.

The consulting firm that I work for is doing a big round of IT layoffs.  I am worried because I have been on the bench a while.  I am lucky that I can work anywhere in the entire tech stack, so AI might survive this round.

IMO, the best way to be positioned is to always be in good with the local tech recruiters. They will contact you with jobs they have and if you make a good impression, you will be one of the first people they get in touch with.  I've switched jobs 3 times like this, all while I wasn't even looking to make a move, they just got in touch with me, I listened to what they had and it was too big of a salary increase to pass up...15-20K each time. Once was a LinkedIn recruiter with the company who contacted me directly.

That's the other thing...I always make sure to listen and talk with them even if its only for a few minutes here and there...that goodwill cannot be understated in the opportunities it will generate for you over time. Tech is tech and getting more techy all the time, but at the end of the day it still comes down to people and relationships more than most think.

Totally agree that we are not a small team by any standards...problem is we PLAY small. Basically we have no one whio really plays BIG and bangs in the corners. Sure wish we had Marcus back...

I'd say it's more a problem of consistency.  There are certainly games where they do actually do that. The problem is they aren't seemingly willing to do it night in and night out. Or at least the majority of the time.  I'd say right now, it's maybe 15-30% of the time.  That being said, it isn't a requirement to be good...

Sabres average 20.12 hits per game, Avalanche 20.20 and Hurricanes 17.42...doesn't seem to hurt them.

Dude, I'm from the Province of Saskatchewan. If you can't spell the name of one of our fine little cities, which I've been to many times, and keep making snarky little quips, it's disrespectful. Is it that hard for you to spell? I bet you have it in you.

Saskatoon! Also, does the name Sasquatch derive from Saskatchewan?

Yay, is this is 10th year we have topped that list? Nothing ever changes...

Well, not quite...TMGM basically decimated that original top prospect pool in a year or two trying to speed up the rebuild and we were left with almost nothing in the pipeline starting from scratch again once he was fired.

It feels like we always have the number one prospect group. Yet, we haven't seen the playoffs in a decade

We have for a few years now because unlike other previous GM's, Adams refuses to trade prospects to speed things up. Might be a good thing in the end, we will see I guess. At the end of the day, having the best prospect pool is far better than not having any.

At the end of the day, I just want him to get it right the way the Bills got it right...if it takes a year or to longer than we would like, then so be it.

Apparently we still have a deep and talanted prospect group.

    1. Benson - small all around forward.  Top line potential.

    2. Savoie - small all around forward. Speedy with top 6 potential

    3. Kulich - 2 way goal scoring forward. 25 goal+ potential.

    4. Levi - small and athletic goalie. Starting NHL potential.

    5. Östlund - small 2 way playmaking forward. Top 6-9 potential but needs another 20lbs.

    6. Rosen - Mitts type forward.  Top 9 potential. Also needs to add more lbs.

    7. Novikov -  Big D with improving O game.  Solid 3rd pair potential.

    8. Johnson - Steady D and great skater, but not much offense.  4-6 NHL D.

    9. Wahlberg - Big forward who skates well and creates offense.  Top 6 already in the SHL.  Has an NHL futures but still needs more development.

    10. Strbak - Strong physical D who also has a good stick.

    11. Neuchev - small talented offensive forward.  (Stop me if you have read this before). Needs time to develop.

    12. Ratzlaff - small athletic goalie.

    13. Komarov - Big 2-way D who has developed offensively.  May lead the Q in D scoring.  Wheeler thinks he will play some in the NHL.

    14. Kisakov - small offensive forward.  Hasn’t progressed as quickly as others.

    15. McCarthy - solid defenseman who needs to refine his game to have a shot at the NHL.

IMHO - Conclusions:  Way to many smaller forwards.  Love all the big D and think Komarov is much to low in the rankings.  I might place him as high as 10th.  Like the respect Novikov’s game is getting.

Östlund is in some ways the key prospect in this group, since he is the only true playmaker.  If he adds the necessary muscle, his all around game is Bergeron style, as he can play both special teams, win draws, clear the D zone and drive offense.  He and Wahlberg are only pure centers.

The big questions:  Are any of these guys elite talents? Can these guys elevate the Sabres to Cup contention, or this just another wave of the same?

Enough with the "too small" comparisons...

STOP THE FALSE NARRATIVE THIS TEAM IS SMALL!!

Sabres are tied for 5th in the NHL in average height and 9th in average weight. They are one of the biggest teams in the NHL now.  A few small skilled players won't hurt them.

  17. Small advantage Sabres...

Florida has the 5th worst record all-time for teams that are still in the NHL on February 27th at 3-7-0-4, good for a .357 points percentage.  Sabres are marginally better at 7-11-3-0, good for a .405 points percentage(10th worst).

The worst team? Seattle Kraken who are 0-1. The worst team with more than one game is the Arizona Coyotes 2-14-0-2, good for a dismal .167 points percentage.

The best team?  Minnesota Wild who are 8-2-0-0 good for an .800 points percentage all-time.
