Seems to be a little easier when you have a year+ to plan and get all your ducks in a row and have no bad contracts or coaches contracts you are still paying on with rules that favor you tho doesn't it?

  2. So because they pay a bunch of money they should be given free cookies and milk that nobody else gets?

People pay a hell of a lot more for NFL franchises and they never got these free perks from the league.

Why would the coyote owner agree to this? It sounds illegal.

Yeah, I would expect a lawsuit that the NHL wouldn't win. You can create whatever policies you want, but if they are illegal, they aren't enforceable.

I disagree. I think the NHL got it right with the expansion draft. VGK and Seattle being competitive is good for the league.

It's hard to really accept 3 conference finals in 6 years due to rules greatly favoring them when we've been in existence 63 years and have the same number of Stanley Cup Finals appearances and likely 1 less Stanley Cup

  4. Think it is becoming apparent the expansion rules are greatly favoring the expansion teams as Vegas has made it to the Stanley Cup Finals twice now, and likely is going to win, and made the conference final once in 6 years.

Seattle looks like a powerhouse team after year 2.

I'm not sure what needs to be done but the rules have changed greatly from the years when San Jose got an NHL record low 24 points and Tampa Bay was terrible their first season in the NHL to Vegas making the Stanley Cup Finals their first year.

There needs to be a happy medium, it doesn't seem right that expansion teams should be able to just basically buy championships by paying an expansion fee and have so many built in advantages in the expansion draft now.

Obviously this doesn't happen that often but it is apparent the rules are too much in favor of expansion teams and something needs to be done moving forward.

I said this draft is average after you ignore the top 3/4. It really turns into a fairly typical draft after that 1st tier of guys but there is an exception I think I am seeing. I am unsure if this is bias on my part or because of the truth that there are a bunch of really solid RHD picks. Looking at all the positions in this draft, I think RHD is probably the deepest followed closely by Center. Also I would say this draft has better goalies than the previous one which makes the Leinonen pick even more frustrating and wasteful.

Anyways... I think I have my top 10 done. I don't think I will do a full list this year because I don't want to.

What about Michkov potentially dropping due to teams not thinking he wants to come here? He is likely the 2nd or 3rd best player in the draft...would the Sabres risk it at 13 if he is there?

Trying to win the offseason but that team needs a lot of work. Most likely will find haphazardly throwing big money at players won't work out well like most teams do.

Yes, "at some point" Adams will need to move on from some of these guys.  But as long as he isn't giving guys NMC's, he'll be able to do so when he actually HAS to make those decisions.  Dumping Mittelstadt in 1 year is likely cutting him loose BEFORE somebody is actually replacing / improving on his role on the Sabres.

If Dahlin really does come in at $10x8 then Adams is looking at at least $5MM minimum in excess cap space from just Thompson, Cozens, and Dahlin.  That right there pretty much locks Mittelstadt up for 4-5 more years without messing up the money available for any of the other kids.  The cap is going up a lot w/in the 1st 2 seasons that Dahlin, Mittelstadt, and Power would be on new deals.

Provided there is no NMC or a limited NMC, Mittelstadt (and pretty much anybody else) is more tradable by having a 4-5 year deal than by having a 2-3 year deal.  We're getting to the point where we get to see how well Adams plan of having guys that want to be here and play with the other kids they came up with actually translates into real results as far as cap management goes.  And the early returns (especially if the rumors that started this thread are correct) are very favorable in that light.

Adams has been brilliant at getting players locked up for less than market value with long term so far...

It doesn't work like that. You can't predict results based on save %. You literally have to look at every goal allowed to determine whether it came about from goalie error, defensive error, superior shooting or just plain old dumb puck luck.

You are right, but more than likely the Sabres would have won a few more games and let in a few less goals.

I think one thing that's evolved overall since Eichel was traded is that the Sabres are incorporating more dump & chase zone entries.  Eichel was very good at possessing the puck through zone entry.  Tage is good for possession on entry too, but with strong forecheckers (Tuch, Skinner, Greenway, Quinn), it provides multiple options for zone entry.  If a team is contesting the blue line, the Sabres are more likely to adjust to dump and chase and be successful than they used to be.  Also, with fast, large forecheckers, particularly Tuch and Greenway, you can wear down a defense with dump and chase as the game goes on which can lead to more controlled zone entries late.

    Sabres transition game is deadly

One thing I noticed yesterday is that the Bandits won nearly every faceoff I saw.  They were officially 13/20 but it seemed more dominant than that, especially late.

Yeah, basically he won almost every faceoff, even if the loose ball was picked up eventually by Colorado...the one goal he scored directly off the faceoff win was amazing...

Back in the early 1990's, scores like 21-15 were common.  It is an indicator of how much defence has evolved over the years.

Bandits defense was stifling yesterday...so many times Colorado didn't even get a shot on net or even a shot period with two guys double teaming a player holding their stick so they couldn't move it or blocking a shot and then basically keeping the loose ball tied up until the shot clock ran out...it was a clinic.

...until an American becomes a star on the world soccer stage.  That's what it will take.

The other thing to consider is that even if it's second rate, soccer is far more popular in the states with large hispanic populations.  We have a local team, the Fort Worth Vaqueros, and their boosters/fans are pretty rabid.  They also started a Junior Vaqueros the following year, putting their roots even deeper into the community.

Not sure if this is a thing in WNY, but a lot of bars and craft brewers open early on the weekends to host soccer watching parties for the Euro matches, and they're a pretty big draw.  For a lot of people they don't know much about soccer; they just want a beer at 9 am on Sunday (and due to a law passed during Covid that's now possible in Texas).

Soccer is preferred by a lot of the Millennials and younger around here because it's "anti-establishment" and different from what their parents follow.  I know a lot of people who sneer at "sports ball" (NFL/NBA/MLB) but follow soccer.  It's got that hipster ethos of "I was a soccer fan before it was cool."

I'm not sure if it's like that outside of Texas, but yeah, soccer is pretty popular here.

I personally find it pretty boring to watch on TV, but the soccer team where my wife teaches got several rounds into the playoffs and I went to a couple games; it's a lot more fun to watch in person.

My father is from Istanbul, so I grew up both playing and watching soccer a lot. Played for 25 years, now only watch it, but I never watch the MLS because it's trash.

Would be like watching A baseball instead of the Majors but without any of the young potential stars.
