  1. GM by committee. All screwed up on their own, but together, wisdom of the crowd will conquer the NHL
  2. He is also signed to a professional contract next year. So I don't think we even could (without lots of permission)
  3. We drafted him in 2012, so should have his rights till 2016
  4. He posts a .923 with the worst team in a decade and posts a .903 with a president's cup contender. That just seems odd to me. Watching the games, there is no question his playing style was different - far less aggressive.
  5. There is a difference between being clutch and being reliable. Both are needed, and they aren't often the same player. A person who goes the whole series without a point but nets the game 7 overtime winner is clutch. But the player who scores in the first period of every game is reliable (in this example like a metronome). A clutch player vs clutch performance is a case of history. I don't think there is a real defining threshold between the two; but a history of performing clutchly (in the clutch?) turns the performance into a characteristic. I think the line between being clutch and having a clutch performance is further blurred because there is an element of an eyeball test. There are some players who make things happen, down late in a game when they step on the ice it feels electric, something feels different. They might not score, or they might make a non-scoring play (e.g. a big hit), but they can still have that attributed to their clutch behaviour (although usually only in a conformational bias manner). It is interesting how clutch players generally fall into two categories - superstar or surprise star. Crosby's golden goal is an example of the former; Bickell/Ward/Leino's playoffs an example of the latter. This is striking, because if it is a surprise star, it is probably a case of getting hot at the right time and having a clutch performance (which then leads to greater confidence and so slightly better short-term performance). Alternatively, if it is just a superstar scoring a timely goal is that really clutch? If they hadn't scored in a while then it was only a matter of time (especially with the amount of time they are on the ice). And if they have been lighting it up all series, well they are just doing what a superstar should do - dominate. (Although I do accept that this argument is slightly having your cake and eating it too) Two more points then i'm done :P. There is also a bias towards superstars being clutch because late in the game down 1-0 in game 7, who do you send out? Scott or Kassian? Obviously you send out the superstar, so they spend far more time in clutch-territory. Finally, playoffs and regular season are very different in style of play. Some players perform better in the playoffs, not because they are clutch, but because the style of game suits their style better. An example of this is Franzen. EDIT: The conformational bias is also a big one for me. How many times has Kane been on the ice and failed to tie the score? For a player to be clutch I would want to see his stats change. I would want to see how his shooting %, points per minute etc. vary between his team leading, his team trailing at any point and his team trailing in the last 10 minutes.
  6. To an extent TG did Buffalo a favor. He never really wanted to be an owner (this was my perception, but I became a fan after he bought it). He just wanted to keep the team in Buffalo. So he bought it, ran it so it broke even most years and sold it for what he paid for it (plus inflation and any loss it had accrued)
  7. They are playing him very poorly. He is an aggressive goalie who they want to play passive. They should have traded for Lundqvist (not a possibility but he plays a style that would work). Maybe Miller has PTSD. He doesn't know how to adjust and play a game when you don't face 40 shots a night :P
  8. Yeah i loved that call
  9. Yeah but you think there are two Toews in the NHL, so what do you know? :P (no. 6 and 8)
  10. 1. Crosby 2. Toews 3. Stamkos 4. Malkin 5. Datsyuk 6. Tavares 7. Kane 8. Getzlaf 9. Weber 10. Giroux
  11. I'd take Toews first overall. He puts up 80 points a season, whilst being defensively fantastic (better than 100 points with mediocre defence imo). Plus he provides the right culture of professionalism and giving it your all. He was in contention for the C for Canada, despite the fact Crosby is a generational offensive player - that is impressive. (Crosby would be my second choice.
  12. I was really impressed with Kane's Olympic performance Hodgson and Kane probably faced the same defences (different conferences not with standing). I don't think the other team was putting out their best D against Scott. I don't like this reasoning. I don't support the Sabres based on the merit of their performance, so I don't see why their performance should affect the legitimacy of my views
  13. This is sophies choice. Bennett is tr better two way player, quicker, plays with an edge and compares himself to Toews (my hockey crush). Reinhart has the better hockey IQ, which might be better in the long run. He is also solid defensively, if not as good as Bennett (who was ranked 3rd best defensive forward in tr O). I chose Reinhart, but would honestly be happy with either. Part of me hopes Florida make the choice for us Of the top 5, Murray spoke with least enthusiasm about Ekblad. Plus we were the lowest scoring team in 70 years. And our forward prospects are almost non existent. I am willing to bet we don't take Ekblad if he is available.
  14. Man this Blues game is awesome. It is a shame these two teams met in the first round. I think they might tire each other out so whoever wins loses next round :(
  15. In the last 10 years. Since the internet has become a thing it is different. Especially European players, which were often selected late because few other teams had been able to go and see them. That doesn't happen anymore. Whilst not as good as the real thing, video-scouting is still very viable, if for no other reason than getting players on scouts radars
  16. I wanted the strength and conditioning guy gone. He is useless
  17. Lidstrom (no N) was a secret. Anyone who mentioned his name outside the red wing war room was viable for firing
  18. Bruins win the cup Ekblad drafted 1st overall Sabres draft Reinhart Islanders keep the pick, draft De Cole Ott resigns Tallinder resigns Briere resigns Setoguchi signs here for 4 years Konopka resigns Scott is not resigned Sabres trade Foligno Kaleta makes the team Pysyk and Risto play in the NHL Zadorov gets 7 games but gets sent down McCabe plays in AHL but is first NHL call up (gets 25+ games) Grigo does not make the team - but plays 30+ games call up Stafford gets the C, Girgenson/Myers the A
  19. "He's 6'8' but he skates like he is 5'8'" I like Murray and Nolan - they both speak plainly but don't get themselves in trouble (too much). Also with the Leino buy out. I got confused the question was will the second buy be used, as the first is reserved for Leino. After a little bit of banter Murray said 50/50. Did he mean Leino or the second buyout is 50/50?
  20. What's the opposite of gambler's fallacy? :P Buffalo's veracity?
  21. 4 picks in the top 32 of the 2015 draft sure could be nice... :P Islanders are screwed either way. They lose a top 5 this year or they lose the chance for McDavid/Eichel and don't draft in the top 60 of a deep draft If I am them I defer, next year could do some serious damage if they lose those picks. Plus with the move coming up, that will make ti harder to get UFAs for next year
  22. Maybe they broke promises or whatever. Just because they are good doesn't mean they can't screw him over
  23. Buffalo - Yes Calgary - Probably Edmonton - I think they dig themselves out this off season. They have to. Florida - Probably Vancouver - Maybe, it depends what they do this offseason. Their goalies could also carry them Carolina - No. They played a large chunk of this season without Ward and with a bad E Staal. Washington - No. They aren't good but they are always a bubble team at the least. NJ - Maybe. They also made the playoffs this season but Jagr probably won't be back Detroit - No way. They made the playoffs without their top three centres (basically). Injury bitten to the nth degree Toronto - No. They are a bubble team Islanders were awful with Moulson/Vanek and Tavares and got worse when both dropped out. Okoposo had a fantastic season. There are 3/4 goalies on FA, who would pick to go to the Islanders over say Anaheim or the Blues or even Washington
