With the buyout of Erhoff, Murray just showed that coddled skill has no place on his roster. GMTM has fired his best player and publicly called him a pussee. (Yes. That is what happened.) 12 Million dollars, and he doesn't give a ######. He's a pussee. GMTM just redefined Hockey Heaven in 3 months. Murray Heaven is going to be ###### ruthless. I was surprised by the move. But I knew that Erhoff was not the guy to be the guy to mentor the kids - Didn't want to stay after practice and work with his freshman pairings.(sometimes I get that, with a wife and kids at home, but it seemed clear it wasn't going to happen at all). Erhoff is probably a perfect #4 guy. That is fine, but on a team that needs to find a #1, #2 and #3 guy, he was, well, just not part of the solution. I could see why GMTM said, "Screw it, my team, let's cut our losses." - but let's not pretend this was about the cap recapture in 2020. In hockey that is a lifetime away. This was a move about the who controls the team culture. Murray, by this buyout, just told the entire league that Erhoff is soft and doesn't fit into the Buffalo Sabres culture. One way to look at it is that this was a mistake. Another way to look at it is that Murray just told the league that he will sacrifice a ton of skill to create the Murray's Sabres Culture.

Unions generally want something back when there are unilateral changes to their collective bargains. They took a year to approve realignment, that's simply my point.

Most teams just didn't draft NCAA players or Swedes in the 70s. There was so much confusion with the WHA that you weren't sure if even your first round picks would show up to camp. fwiw I think that draft went another 14 rounds. The Sabres and most teams were simply done. The draft basically went until teams stopped picking. It could have gone 50 rounds.

Bettman is a fiduciary of the owners. As unsexy as it sounds, hockey in Buffalo was in the owners' best interest.

I think there is a very good chance the nhlpa doesn't approve this plan right away. Article 8 exhibit 4 lays out the weighting in the CBA. Which limits the lottery to only 1 pick btw. The players might want a little something back.
