  1. That is not my understanding. Per CBA language if the majority of the work a person does does not directly generate revenue, that person's salary cannot be counted toward direct costs. They are talking more about sales people and the costs associated with running the NHL.com Shop. Coaching a practice or reviewing game tape don't generate revenue, so a coach's salary is not direct cost. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong.
  2. I'm not much of a Gamer, but if there is one series that hooks me to hours of play, it's Blizzard's Diablo. The third installment came out this week (10 year, and I will likely be trading sleep for Demon Slaying in a significant way this weekend.
  3. This is true, but the way you have stated it here could be misleading. The direct costs and expenses are very exclusive, for instance, the scouting department, FO, Coaches, Transportation, equipment, trainers, doctors, etc. are not netted from HHR. So all of that expense comes out of the owner's share. And it is 10s of millions of dollars. An easy comparison would be a Movie, where the Actors are both empoyees and the resources. Actors typically end up with about 10-20% of revenue depending on the movie. Occasionally it may go up as high as 30% for a movie built around a key star. But that would be rare. They players cannot win this, IMO. Fans are not loyal to players, they are loyal to Logos, and the Owners are the Logos.
  4. Because the whole pie belongs to the owners. Without the TV contracts and Stadium leases, there is no pie. 7% of $3B is $210M per year, divided by 700 players is an average pay cut of $300k. I imagine something like a prorated system of cuts based on a 12% rollback so league min drops to like $485k and Brad Richard's goes from $12M to $10.5M. Best the players can hope for, IMO, is 52%.
  5. Agreed, I think the cosmetic issues will be bargained against each other. The Revenue issue will be the players staring at the current level, which i think is around 55%, and the owners wanting to go to NBA/NFL levels which are closer to 50%. The next CBA will be at 50-51%, the only question is how many games the players are willing to sit out before they accept the inevitable. This isn't like typical contract negotiations where the company stands to lose money if the work doesn't get performed. Enough of these owners lose money if the work IS performed to provide significant strength to the league.
  6. My take: If the main argument is reorganization vs. Olympics the negotiations are going well. If the main argument is 55% vs 50% we won't play 82 games next season.
  7. I'm in the process of relocating back to upstate NY, and as was anticipated, the sale of my old house in Cincinnati is taking forever. What was not anticipated, was that my Realtor would come back to me 45 days after the initial listing and say she overestimate the market value of my home and I will likely need to take a $20-$30k short sale to unload the house. On top of that, the temporary home I had found for my Beagle bailed on me (the third time this has happened) and I finally had to surrender the Family Dog to a shelter for adoption. Breaking the hearts of a Mother and 4 year old boy.
  8. Best part, Gillis KNEW about the injury when he made the trade!
  9. I'm sorry chz. Addiction is powerful. It's bigger than any one person, and it can be bigger even that a strong group of loving people. That you put yourself out there, and tried, is a testament to your strength and your love for your friend, regardless of the result. My prayers go out to you and your friends family.
  10. Wasn't there a new emphasis on that particular type of play last year?
  11. I don't care when my Boss or another executive uses it, but what pisses me off is when my "peers" use it. Technically I outrank all of them (based on our grade and title), but since they all have 20 additional years spent mired in mediocrity, they feel like they get to decide which projects are worth their time, and which dung piles get put on the "kid"
  12. To go along with this, I hate the Phrase, "I'm gonna let you take the lead on this." 90% of the time what they meant to say was, "I don't want anything to do with this boring/useless/destined to fail project, but, in my head, I out rank you, so I'm going to throw this flaming bag of ###### over this imaginary fence and drop it squarely in your lap...loser." :censored:
  13. They might be looking for quantity. Ryan, Cogliano, Beauchemin, Sbisa, and Hiller are the only players on that team under contract past July 1st 2013. And Koivu, Selanne, Blake, Lydman, and Visnovsky are/will be over 35. Trading Getzlaf now might give them a chance to rebuild faster. They are woefully short on young talent for a team that missed the playoffs by 15 points.
  14. Best bet at trading for a big time Center would be Getzlaf. It would cost a lot. And the problem is, you can't use this year's draft picks and sign Getzlaf to an extension at the same time. Because you can't start extension talks with him until July 1st. I'd worry greatly about trading a lot of assets for a player in his last year before UFA. Maybe: Stafford and McNabb/Brennan, the Nashville pick, and a 1st rounder next year contingent on Getzlaf resigning? would that be worth it?
  15. I look up and see the Eastern Conference Championship, president's cup, and 2 NE Division Banners, and I think to myself. Damn, if only we could win the Derby. Greg Norman and Jim Kelly would agree. But in the end Pletcher Finally pulled it off. Thank god the Prestons' gave him is 25th shot. And a hearty wink ;) ________________________________________ How much difference does the Jockey make in a 20 horse race like this? Is Borel that much better? or is he just getting the good mounts?
  16. Prior to Super Saver, Todd Pletcher was the Lindy Ruff of Thoroughbred Racing. Always good, but never good enough. 24 straight losses and he finally wins one when he's able to get the best FA jockey on the market to put on top of his horse. Also, Thanks for the analysis. I'm excited for saturday.
  17. With the spread/quick strike passing game that the bills employ, is a mid-level Tackle more valuable to the team than improving the SS or OLB position or providing a big bodied receiver like Steven Hill? LTs are paid big $ to prevent sacks. The Bills, due to their style, not skill, were the least sacked team in the NFL last season.
  18. I'm all for drafting the CB in the first, and i'm not married to using Pick#41 on a WR. Even with the injuries and decrease in Fitz's efficiency during the second half, the offense finished in the middle of the pack. The Defense was terrible. With our schedule this year, a strong defense should be able to get us in the playoffs. It's a lineup of Quarterbacks that will be a nice soft landing for new a Rookie DB. I'd seriously look at the best available non-line defensive player before I picked a WR in the second.
  19. No tomatoes, no paprika = no goulash Said the second generation hungarian-american.
  20. it's "chili" in name only, it's actually much closer to the "hotsauce" that comes on a garbage plate, and it is delicious. However, that city has had a larger role in choosing the Presidents of the United States than the states of New York, California, and Texas, combined. So not trusting their judgement is probably a good call.
  21. I spent the last 7 years in Cincinnati. He is a god there. Still.
  22. I added an extension to my web browser that adds an asterisk anytime anything refers to a gretzky record or oilers stanley cup.
  23. Gretzky's mother is related to a British Officer who sacked Detroit in 2012. That blood is on Wayne's hands too.
