As bad as it sounds, most of us would do the same at this point.
Sure, we'll scream and yell about how WE would never go through the motions, but it's what people do in losing organizations everyday, both on and off the ice. The same thing applies to offices, restaurants, you name it.
Why are the playoffs so great? Because every player is putting 100% on the line for a cup. There is something to get up for. What does this group have to play for?
Yeah, sure... pride. Athletes are professionals, and that comes with a cost/benefit analysis. Why bust up my body for a team that is rudderless, has no hope or direction, and where the locker room/arena atmosphere is so toxic that the fans boo at home when you're tied?
Is it right? Of course not. But these guys are human.
