GDT:Carolina at Buffalo 4-6-2015 7PM MSG, WGR550

I predict squeals of joy from the Sabres locker room tonight "It's us versus the world fellas! Just two more wins and most of us can go back to the AHL after giving the fans a big F U !" -
What would be the absolute most heart-wrenching way for the Sabres to blow this? How about only needing to lose ONE of three in a miserable season to secure a generational superstar and winning all 3. I think deep down we all know how this is going to end.

Perfect dream scenario: Sabres lose in regulation tonight Arizona wins in regulation tonight + Sabres loss in regulation to Carolina Monday. Then it's over.

Thanks a lot... I told you to keep that quiet... And for the record they were underwear, not panties. Give me SOME credit dammit!

My heart cannot take a 2-0 Sabres lead... I want to check gamecenter on my phone around 8:00, see 3-0 Islanders, and breathe easy all night. Then, I want to remember around 1:30am or so that the Coyotes also played, open chrome on my phone and see that they at least got to OT. Since this is my dream they won 4-3 in regulation.

Just remember: Carolina's franchise exists to crush our dreams

Well of course. But it would feel hopeless if they got even 1 tonight. They still have a win they can burn, hopefully the last game of the season after going 0-3 so that everyone can be on the same page for 1 game and we can all celebrate.

I started this thread due mostly to blind rage at the thought of Arizona, Darcy, and the 7 fans who follow that team being rewarded for sucking for 1/2 of 1 season while we basically haven't had hockey for 2 years now. So the logic isn't the best... This is why I should not comment during or right after games lol

Arizona looks totally pathetic, lifeless, and hopeless...Of course the Sabres have to be more fired up and inspired than ever. lol Hopefully tonight's loss crushes their morale for the rest of the season and they mail it in AND the goalie gets cold. Toews is my new hero if that happens. He may have single-handedly saved this team from missing out on an elite player.

Tim Murray: "Good News" Ted! Ted Nolan: What? Tim Murray: We're keeping you on to earn that money in your contract! Nice work this year my friend! Ted Nolan: :(

Any tweets about squeals of pure joy coming from the locker room tonight? Could other teams please actually TRY and CARE when they play the Sabres now?
-
And (and this is the KEY I think) the teams they are playing are totally disinterested and barely even seem awake. If these other teams played them and actually tried and cared they would lose 4-1 every night.

I think the trouble is having it seemingly in hand most of the season only to lose it at the end. Had the Sabres been in the position Arizona is now to swoop in and take the prize but came up a bit short it would suck but we would not have assumed it was theirs for the taking. So Strome and Marner would be a nice prize and we would say 1/3 shot at MacDavid/Eichel is cool. 100,000 if awesome but not if you thought you were getting a million.

Yikes... lots of anger and rage on the Sabres facebook post about the win....

I like that a lot. Wouldn't my idea help trades a bit though? You would know in April 2015 exactly when you were picking in the 2016 draft. You could theoretically win the cup and still pick 1st, assuming you went from awful to amazing in one season. Awful in 2015, earn a top pick in 2016, be amazing in 2016, earn a low pick in 2017. The year delay would mean that there is no immediate prize for sucking. You get the prize but you wait a whole season to get it. You could know over a year in advance that you have the #1 overall pick, so you might actually NOT tank and try to build up a team.

See, I absolutely LOVE football and can watch any NFL game, so as much as I have been sort of numb to Bills wins/losses I still watch every game and enjoy it. But with hockey I will admit that I am only truly interested in the Sabres when they are good. I don't watch much hockey outside of Sabres games, unless it's the playoffs. This got my attention and got me to buy in and now I just feel dumb and like I ought to be mad at myself. Because it's a choice, really. This is all optional.

Here's an idea that would making tanking even less likely in the future. Why not make it so that there is still a lottery, but it is for the pick in the following year's draft? For example, the lottery in April 2015 would be for the 2016 draft. Also, you could drop 4-5 slots no matter what. I think it would go a LONG way to never seeing this garbage again. The reward would be so far away and so uncertain that tanking would not have a clear prize. Are we really this crazy about losing a game in March 2015 that would not affect the draft order until summer 2016? Thoughts?

The second. This sucks so freaking bad. It is FAR worse to fail at losing than to fail at winning. At least when you fail at winning something everyone is on the same team. So you didn't get it done.. that's hardly new. There's always the next season to hope for the big win in that case. When you fail at losing some fans hate the coach and players, fans are at each others throats, and it is sleezy and gross feeling the whole time. Plus you are not going to get the "big loss" that means a Crosby type player on your team. They never come available in free agency, you can never trade for them (and if you can you WILL lose the trade and it will not be worth it), so the only way you get them is the draft. So failing at losing is a totally empty feeling. There is no next year for it. You just will not get a superstar, period. That's why this is worse IMO

It's a combination... Teams that play the Sabres come in barely awake for the game, play their worst possible goalie just to get him ice time, and sleepwalk through the game. The Sabres, meanwhile, are out to prove some point about pride and character and treat every game like it's game 7 of the cup finals. So it looks like they are doing better than they are. Arizona and Toronto just plain do not care. We just have to pray that Arizona gets points this weekend.

I disagree. This completely sucks on every level. The raw (and extremely ugly) emotions we are seeing in the fanbase are not in any way good.

I agree, and just to be clear: those of us who bought into the "tank" were just buying what the franchise was selling. We didn't decide to do it. We just supported the idea since it was clear that was their commitment. It makes no sense to hope they fail and pick 3rd, because then we're stuck in zombieland of mediocrity for who knows how long....

My god is it going to get ugly around this team WHEN they blow this..... Fans haven't had anything to get excited about for what feels like forever, and just when it finally looks like there is some light at the end of the tunnel they suddenly decide they are all proud and full of character. Whatever. Last season I honestly couldn't have told you who/when they played or where they stood in the league. I could not have cared less, and that's where I go back to now that they have taken away the only thing there was to get excited for.

When the season ends: Ted Nolan (with that smirk on his face): "Well, nice knowing ya Tim!" Tim Murray: "Why are you packing up? You have 2 years left on your contract... hahahahahahahahahaha!"
