    Big. Old. Brett. Murray!

I’ve been watching this guy. He was criticized for his skating but he looked pretty smooth at the BCA.

I’d like to see how he responds to the big club. I’ve seen him use his size to get position, not dominantly, but he knows he’s a big dude. I’m willing to bet that some bigger money in a bigger league would alter his play style.

You’d think he’d do everything he could to impress the Sabres to get promoted.  If he hasn’t been a physical player, would he really add that after getting a shot?

The secondary is nice, though. You've got an anchor, and inverted Hartford whale tail, a Space Needle, and a harpoon head --- all in one. It's pretty sharp design.

I like the whole concept.  Now, they need to follow what the San Jose Sharks do, where, with the ice as a screen, have a video of an octopus moving through the water and catching its prey.

The Jays also start on the road at Tampa, don't they?

I'm not so sure I want them here.

    Good.  Stay in Dunedin.

Yes, they’re on the road the first week.  As the official statement said, once they leave, they’re not going back to Canada until after the season.

Dunedin’s Pinellas county was hard hit this past week.

Agreed.  Buffalo corporate dollars are already scraping by to support two of the big four.  The economics of baseball with a soft salary cap would kick the hell out of the profitability of a MLB team in WNY.  It'd likely force even a rich owner to downgrade payrolls and strap competitiveness.  Dodgers, Cubs, Yankees, and Red Sox all spent north of $200M last year.  These teams are major corporations supported by major corporations.  The Bills only spent $158M AAV in 2019.  It's highly unlikely that we could field a competitive MLB team that at least breaks even in profit.

The silver lining - not to be overlooked - is that we have the best and biggest stadium in MiLB located in the heart of our downtown, field a competitive team (when our affiliate isn't hot trash, cough, Mets, cough), have dirt cheap tickets that make going to games extremely family friendly (as opposed to MLB-mandated ticket prices), good local food at concession stands, make a sustainable profit, and still have money left over for fireworks*.

Minor league dirt piles are old-timey romantic fun, but Pilot Downtown North AmeriCare Dunn Tire Coca-Cola Sahlen Field is a true gem for sports spectatorship.  Its architecture started the now continent-wide trend of modern retro-classic stadiums.

*Story time: I will never, ever forget seeing a walk-off grand slam whose celebration went straight to fireworks (because Friday Night Bash).  Simply awesome.

If the stadium is so great, why are the Jays saying it’s inadequate for MLB night games?

  6. Hello, GM Adams?  You there?

Did the Islanders still have the rights to Sorokin after 6 years?  I read they signed him to an entry level contract for this year, even though he can’t play, so he became a Restricted Free Agent to sign for next season.  Dude had Save % .93 and above for the last 3 KHL seasons.  With the KHL play being very wide open, that’s really damn good.

Would a smart GM work behind the scenes to make a deal for the rights to a Sorokin so they could sign him?

There's no need to reseed these teams, just like there's no need to expand the playoffs to 24.  The NHL really just can't get out of its own way sometimes.  But I do see how some warmup games are a good idea.

No Sabres or California teams to root for!   Guess I’ll root for Vegas.  Eastern Conference?   I guess it’s Buffalo South and the Carolina Hurricanes.

  8. So, a stadium for a Triple A team has inadequate lighting and team facilities?  Who owns them and who owns the stadium?

Like with the Sabres and Amerks and most NBA teams, the major league team should own the minor league teams.  Then they wouldn’t have to go shopping for a good deal every few years and changing affiliates.

  9. Was there as a 12-year old when Sabres franchise began.

All-time favorite-  Perreault- he was so exciting to watch

Most exciting moments- 1st Sabres game, making Stanley Cup Finals in franchise’s 5th season, watching French Connection

Most frustrating- two Stanley Cup Final losses,  losing in Conference Finals after winning President’s trophy

Improve current team- add toughness, extensive winning/playoff experience,  top goaltender

I’m surprised it took this long in the thread for Gretzky.  He was amazing.  Not a big guy, not a great shot, just a great player.

    Gretzky

    Ovechkin

LaFleur-  full rink rushes as exciting as Perreault.

    Pavelski

    Logan Couture

  11. Just watched NHL Network’s Countdown show which showed their list of the top 25 lines of All-Time.

I was pleasantly surprised to see the French Connection line as # 2.  That’s really saying something with the history of the NHL.  Those of us that got to see them play were truly blessed.

    #1 was Howe, Abel, Lindsay.

Notable was Gretzky, Kurri Tikanen #7.  You’d think the AllTime leading scorer and one of the best goal scorers of his time would be higher.

Screw them. I’m not about to feel bad for a team that’s won 71 Cups and was in the playoffs 36 straight seasons, when our miserable team has been around 50 years and hasn’t even been in a playoff game for the last 20% of its existence.

You didn’t catch my sarcasm font.

It also helps that Boston did this very thing with their Eichel.

What did they get back for Thornton?

I was just going to mention that a deal with Eichel would have some similarities to when Boston traded Thornton.  Their return was mediocre.  20-goal/40 point scorer Marco Sturm,  young defenseman Brad Stuart and Wayne Primeau.  That was it.  Sturm continued his production for a few years, Stuart arguably didn’t live up to his potential, and Primeau was Primeau.  Meanwhile, Thornton has played 14+ seasons with the Sharks, with production not declining til his 40s.

Jack's not the problem. The team isn't talented enough.

When do we start thinking the team might be better off dealing him for 3 good players?  Of course, even though Botteril is gone, we could end up with the return from O’Reilly deal.

Jack is a very good player. I wouldn’t yet call him great.  One very good player, a few good players (Reinhardt, Dahlin, Oloffson) and a bunch of mediocre players isn’t going to get it done.

The rat thing, if it was Florida was during their Stanley Cup run.  Mellanby killed a rat in the dressing room before a game and ended up scoring 2 or 3 goals.  The fans literally threw hundreds of fake Marchands onto the ice when Florida would score their 1st goal of a game during that playoff run.

The only player, before Marchand, that was called the Rat that immediately springs to mind was Kenny Linesman, though they wouldn't have littered the ice for 1 of his goals.  Back in the days before Linesman came along, people didn't throw much other than hats, beer cups, and the random octopus onto the ice, so though there might have been others w/ that moniker doubtful the fans would've done that then.

The own goal was likely Colorado Rockies giving Billy Smith the first ever NHL goal "scored" by a goalie.

Yes, it must’ve been Florida.  There were 100s.  They seemed to cover more than half the ice, more than hats for a hat trick.

Another funny moment was with a team up by a goal and an empty net, a player is all alone skating towards the net with the puck.  The announcer says “This should clinch it” just before the player loses his edge and goes flying to the ice and the puck goes wide. An opposing player trailing the play, grabs the puck and heads up ice and his team scores to tie the game before the end of regulation.

And the sad thing is and don't get me wrong I don't wish this on anyone, but she won't get it.  Some innocent doing her damn shopping, or one of the kids, will and it won't end well.

Same thing with the Orange Man.  You’d think karma would have him get it, but not only has he tested negative, it was the most negative the doctor had ever seen.

Not trying to be rude, but why do I care about Buffalo potentially hosting playoff games that the Sabres won't be playing in and none of us could even go watch? They'd might as well be playing on Mars.

The lower gravity on Mars would make the games interesting.

Mal Davis' head goal:   Sabres clear puck up boards, bounces off Mal Davis' head as he's leaving the ice, bounces a couple more times, and beats the opposing goalie (I forgot

who it was.)   Strange goal.  That's how I remember it anyhow.

Best Gretzky goal that no one seems to remember nor have a copy of:  Gretzky was in "his office" behind the net.  He lifted the puck over the center of the net, off the goalies'

back and in.   Not a lacrosse goal.  A flip OVER the net from behind.

They showed one where a Penguin took a shot from the point, it deflected off Crosby in front, went off the glass behind the net, hit the back of the goalie and into the net.  They didn’t say whether the shooter called it.

There was another where a player showed his soccer skills by heading the puck into the net. It was not allowed.
