  1. Direct TV sucks!  If they didn't have the monopoly on NFL Sunday Ticket, I might research options.  Recorded shows randomly disappear from the recording list.  They've known about it for months but a couple of software updates later and it's still happening.

Not even close.  I think there were about four people.

Really? I looked back thru the thread and on July 19th, you said there was you, me & SDS. Then Derrico said Briere48 and exWNYer wanted in.  He also mentioned that Dennis the Menace was dropped from the original league.  Later he said Swampd and Jeffismagic were interested.  Later, Stenbaro said he was interested.

    That's potentially nine.

They've been staring at me from the sidebar since the site was upgraded.

    Boston Bruins @ Buffalo Sabres
New York Rangers @ Buffalo Sabres
Vegas Golden Knights @ Buffalo Sabres
    Colorado Avalanche @ Buffalo Sabres
    Buffalo Sabres @ Arizona Coyotes

How do you think the Sabres will do?  I'm going out on a limb here and say the Sabres will go 3-1-1, with a big loss vs. Vegas and OTL against the Rangers.

So the first 5 games will be:

Boston Bruins 2, Buffalo Sabres 3 (OT)
New York Rangers 5, Buffalo Sabres 4 (OT)
Vegas Golden Knights 8, Buffalo Sabres 2
Colorado Avalanche 0, Buffalo Sabres 2 (Ullmark shutout)
Buffalo Sabres 5, Arizona Coyotes 1

    Prove me wrong.

How many seasons in a row now has them going West in the 1st couple of weeks?

  4. I think this is about what's happening. I'd take it a step further, though, and observe that JBOT has gone so far as to jack hammer into the basement floor and is laying new pipe, etc.

The Knights certainly caught lightning in a bottle. Of course, they weren't cleaning up a mess that prior GMs had left behind, and they had the benefit of an expansion draft with very favourable terms.

And they started with a team salary of $0

terrible trade hated it. Like the 1st rounder but that's it. A 2nd in 3 years cmon! another Gm in over their heads gets taken to the cleaners. Not sure how the national media thinks we have won this trade hands down. We got their 5th best prospect and 2 salary dumps. I wanted to trade o'rielly but I thought wed get something useful in the deal/ Even the 1st rounder is a crapshoot because itll be late. Ive had just about enough of this team

Odds are that the main motivation on Sunday was to not have to pay the bonus due at the end of the day. That may not have been Jason's decision.

  5. That's precisely the problem. His previous best was a .918 in 17 starts in 2015-16. His career average, including his career-best season, is .915. I'll dump his first season in the NHL where he had a whopping 1 start, but he's posted the following: .910, .902, .918, .913, .931. One of those is not like the others. If you're committing to him for 3 years at a decent salary, you're essentially projecting that the outlying year is the real Hutton. I find that highly unlikely. For reference, his career average would have put him at 21s in the league last season among qualified goalies. That's...not good. Bernier, meanwhile, has a career .914, and is drawing (as reported) considerably less interest. Mrazek has a career .911, and has almost no interest. If you think the real Hutton is a .931 guy, then by all means, commit. But that's a bad bet.

Yeah, seems like Mrazek would be a better bet. With the competition for goalies, how likely would the Sabres be able to sign one if they don't go for a 3 year deal? A team having the worst record in 3 of the last 5 seasons will have a hard time getting any free agents to sign.

  6. Signing an equally mediocre goalie to not 3 years? I'm fine with a goalie for 3 years to solidify the position, but Hutton doesn't do that.

Am I missing something with Hutton? 17-7-3, led the NHL IN GAA at 2.09, .931 SV%, 3 SO. Yes, it was a career year for him at age 32 but those are outstanding stats.

  7. i don't think so, I'm thinking the opposite and we see a couple big moves to shake things up

They have said they need to shake things up and I think we will see more then bandaids and just depth signings while they waste another year waiting for youth to develop.

I'm not so sure they make big moves. Two of the biggest recent contracts were Kane and O'Reilly. Kane was traded and O'Reilly may be soon. Anybody know where they're at with salary cap for next season?

Nick shore should be on this list.

Is he related to Eddie Shore?

  8. Johnson isn't under contract either so I think it's fair to stop mentioning him.

And FWIW, Ward's numbers were essentially identical to Lehner's last year so I'm not sure what you are going for there.  Ward would be cheaper.

It depends on what the Sabres are thinking.  Do they want a solid #2 with the thought that it's Ullmark's job or do they want someone to compete with Ullmark right now.  Given that they also have 2 2nd round picks in Johansson and UPL (plus whatever goalie they might draft tomorrow) in the system I think this is Ullmark's shot to take the job.  He's had a couple solid years in Rochester, he's had a cup of coffee in the NHL, he's almost 25 years old, it's about time to see if he's the guy.  If not now then really it's never for Ullmark.  That leads me to the solid #2 area for goalies which brings Cam Ward into play as well as Carter Hutton and Anton Khudobin.  There are several other guys out there for whom you could trade rather cheaply I'd suspect as well.

I don't know what they're thinking but they should always have competition. If a player isn't strong enough mentally to handle competition, he shouldn't be a starter.

It pissed me off when the Bills with Chan Gailey signed Fitzpatrick at the time to be a backup to Trent Edwards because they didn't want Edwards looking over his shoulder. In the end, though, Fitz took the job and Edwards was released.

  9. Plenty of writers do just fine. Bob McKenzie is awesome on Twitter.

Twitter doesn't change who you are. But if you're a prick, it tends to give you enough rope to hang yourself. How many examples do we really need of that?

Roseanne found out the hard way. Career reboot for some of the cast ended by a dumb tweet.

  10. I hate it when NBA refs call similar plays differently involving a star vs a young unproven player.

I hate that baseball home plate umpires call strikes differently. It should be standardized.

I remember when Sandy Alderson left the Oakland A's to join the commissioner's office and dictated that all of the umpires should follow the MLB rule book for the strike zone. In response, an umpire was quoted as saying: "Nobody's going to tell me how to call balls and strikes!" and he kept his job.

  11. As they turned over the card, I expected to see the Hurricanes logo so when I saw it was the Sabres, I jumped out of the chair with a loud yell. Surprised my wife didn't come over to see what was going on but I guess she's used to yells coming from the man cave.

The Sabres have an 18.5 percent chance of being No. 1. Montreal has a 9.5 percent chance. Carolina has a 3 percent chance.

The NHL has made these lottery odds even worse than the NBA. At least with the NBA the worst team has a 25% chance. I think, no matter what, the worst team should have a 50% chance. They work their butts off to have the worst record and they should be rewarded.

My local NBC affiliate also didn't broadcast it. Do they do it like the NBA with the team cards and claim this was all done with some private security firm, who have had control?

  13. Because Jbot knows he didn’t give him a roster that could execute the system properly. Wowie had some real +’s and -‘s this season. Reaching Sam and Jack were huge long-term pluses for this organization.

I’m not a Kane fan. I think his shoot first and pass rarely mentality was a terrible fit here, especially playing with Jack. That said Kane, after the initial incidents here seemed to really mature. His play and effort certainly did. We all need to hope that SJ really likes him and re-signs him to salvage the trade.

In last night's game, Kane was in a 2 on 1 with Donskoi, with Donskoi carrying the puck in and then passing to Kane at point blank range. Kane actually passed it back to him at the right side of the goal for Donskoi to score. I was shocked. Even the Sharks play-by-play guy immediately said Kane could've easily scored himself but he passed yo his teammate. Looks like being in a winning environment is wearing off on the guy.

  14. The refrain has been even Scotty Bowman couldn't win with these guys. But finish dead last? No way. Something was very much amiss, and it's hard for me to see greatness out of Housley after this debacle. Also, FWIW, Botterill has gotten off easy, too. He had a draft, a free agent period, a trade deadline, a whole season. He turned over half the roster and they still stunk. He sat on his hands while the team burned early on, and the Kane deal was dreadful. Not a good start for either guy.

This franchise is just jinxed. Even when Bowman was in charge they couldn't win a cup, even though he had won one everywhere else.
