That same year, Bill Buckner watched a routine ground ball go through his legs at first base ... Baseball’s infamous E3 ... the Red Sox! Mookie Wilson, I believe ...

I often call the 1980s the best decade for the NHL. The game’s were up tempo and physical. If there was a best of the best, it was Edmonton V’s. Calgary. The game’s were on TV late, being west coast starts. Still, you made time for Hockey Night in Canada when they met. Edmonton was just a bit better. We all loved Lanny McDonald. in 1986, Edmonton was at its peak. They met Calgary in the playoffs. Calgary, Edmonton, Calgary, Edmonton, Calgary, Edmonton .... and then game seven. With the score tied 2 to 2 in the third period, Steve Smith scored into his own net. It did it deflect off him. He shot it in, attempting to pass. He collapsed to the ice. Final, 3-2 Calgary. Graceful after, Steve Smith became Everyman who ever had a nightmare of not having his homework, not knowing he had an exam, forgetting where his locker was ....

I’d lost track of him for decades, but I still remember watching, that night, so many years ago. I was a newlywed! Seemed like a stand up guy. Winning culture, too!

Welcome to the board. Do you mean the role of captain is being offered to potential free agents or that it’s being offered to existing players in contract negotiations? Perhaps it’s both. It would not surprise me if it’s discussed in certain situations. I’m not so sure the player vote thing is as prevalent as I remember it was in my youth.

1). Holy Schmoly, RF and TBPHD. 2). IKP .. Well done. A glimpse not only into player analysis, but team construction. 3). Beaulieu rhymes with who knew?

I like Dudacek’s take.

If the captaincy doesn’t go to Eichel, bad things, man. There is no longer a rival in terms of talent, experience, or time in seat. The selection of someone else, or some committee process, is an indictment. It’s year four and he’ll cost $10 million. “Growing into it” in two to five years is ... disappointing. Who'd have thought this would be a question when he was drafted? If I recall, his competitiveness, leadership, complete game, etc., were off sets to McDavid’s pure speed and skill advantage when justifying talking about the two, together. McDavid was the “what”, or most skilled. Eichel was the “who”, or most ... the guy. I'm waiting. That said, Eichel, Okposo and Risto. Hope becomes a strategy. Disclaimer ... I’ve never met the young man.

“Engaged”, “immersive” ... this is what I’ve sensed and what moved me to post. I enjoy snook along the shore and took tarpon number two earlier this year.

I don’t know fly fishing from shinola. I’m sad about that. It seams to me that designing and tying a fly, and laying it out just so, brings an intimacy to fishing that’s unique. In the Gulf of Mexico, I might catch a fish in fifteen minutes. Same on the French River in Ontario. But a fly fisherman takes weeks to catch a fish. If I wrote poetry, I’d write of fly fisherman thinking like, and becoming like, their catch .. all with resolute patience and exquisite skill. I’m not sure what your fly’s supposed to do or what it’s supposed to fool. I love it.

Remove “sports” .... Change “wear” to “do” and “do with” ... Imagine, substituting your ideas for those of others when it concerns their stuff! The hubris. I’m with Hoss. It’s your money, your stuff. You get to decide how it’s best used. I, too, will forever rail, comrade.

Santayana and Kubler Ross in your first post .. gotta respect that.

You know, when I saw this, I couldn’t help but recall “to thine own self be true” from the same play. I always dig me some Yuri ...

Resurrecting this thread .... Happy Fourth of July, to all ... what a magnificent idea and courageous act not so long ago. Best of all, I’m in Buffalo and about to enjoy people, places and things that are not “just so” anywhere else.

Late Night Thoughts On Listening to Mahler’s Ninth Symphony ... Lewis Thomas. A classic compendium of essays I first found in the 80s. The writing still touches me, although I can feel how much I’ve changed in 30 plus years. I can SEE how much, as well, thanks to my scribbling in the margins ... which is really cool to visit.

SDS ... as always ... grateful.

ROR is an outstanding hockey player. He’s not out of place in world best of the best games. He does many things well, a rarity. Sometimes, we see that guy and assume he leads. I’m not sure if he’s got that in him. He may. Perhaps it was squelched in the locker room he found himself in. He’s gone and will have to be replaced by committee. That says a lot. For whatever reason, the next act begins. I’m disappointed in the return when I think of a best of the best caliber player. I’m not when I think of the circumstances. To TBPHD. Much insight this last 24 hours. Your thoughts along the lines of not having to do it now if the return wasn’t there sway me. I’ve cut bait, though. Perhaps JBot did, as well. I think I’m going to file this trade in that folder. Edit to add ... Eichel better light it up.

I’ve had this nightmare for a week, but I don’t get to a prediction. I think it'll be interesting to watch what they do with the "C" come 2018. If Jack doesn't get it, JBot's got him on a short leash.

I'll keep the trend going! Glad you're here and what a wonderful username and avatar. For an expat like me, seeing old school reminders of WNY is awesome ... Man, I want a cold one NOW.
