Now that the regular season is winding down, the trade deadline has passed and it doesn't look like the Sabres will make it far if they happen to sneak into the playoffs I was wondering if anyone knows when the NHL draft starts? Also, can teams make player trades going into the draft or just at the draft and what are the rules around that? I think there are a lot of moves the Sabres can make and since it looks like they are recognizing they need to make changes it could be an exciting off season to watch. Thanks.

There is nothing stating we need to use a #1 or #2 pick. We can trade at the draft too.

I would like to see the Sabres get a young Goalie. Getting younger in net would allow us to trade Miller who I believe could get us the best return at the draft. Goalies that could be available: Ben Bishop - (2) 2's Jonathan Bernier - 1st and a 3rd Jake Allen - 1st and 3rd

The boys on WGR sound like idiots if that is their suggestion. Vanek has a year left on his contract and that would kill us next year too. What Boston would need to give up to get Vanek means this trade should never happen.

I think those Flyers and these Sabres are a good comparison. The key additions for the Flyers were Smith, Timmonen and Briere. Those Flyers really lacked leadership and those acquisitions were previous captains on playoff teams. I think leadership is the one component this Sabres team has been lacking ever since Drury and Briere left. I can see Hodson with some good qualities and if O'Reilly is projected to be that guy and we can get them then I'd like to see us do it. I just hope Darcy isn't to in love with our players to make a move.

I've read several reports that Colorado didn't have a set return they were looking for and that is one of the factors on why a deal is so hard to reach for trade. For example I read that for the Rangers it was Del Zotto and a promising prospect but for other teams it was roster player, prospect and pick. I think depending on who we offered it would vary as well. They may be willing to add pieces to get the right players.

I've seen O'Reilly comparred to Drury for his leadership several times in various reports. I've also seen him compared to a less physical Rod Brind'Amour. If I can get a guy to captain this team and help right this ship then I will trade Myers. I think he still has a lot of potential but this team needs some heart and leadership.

Muckler built a team that was called the hardest working team in hockey led by Peca with Hasek in net. Other teams didn't try to touch Hasek because the Sabres would have kicked their butt.

Yes I do believe that. I believe that organizations like the Flyers and Bruins would look at what they have done over that same time period and how they have "bottomed out" and how they both made it to the cup finals in the last few years. Both teams are always tough to play against physically and have leadership. Two qualities that the Sabres lack under Ruff and Regier.

Really think Myers needs to sit for a game or two. Mar hand beating him like that tonight is just embarrassing. He responded well to it last year. And Leopold, if he is going to be making those mistakes then I'd rather watch Brennan. At least they would be rookie mistakes and we could see what he has to offer instead of wasting away on the bench. Leopold could probably still get us a 1st or 2 nd rd pick.

I'm not sure of the system but Ruff's three best years were when we went to the Stanley Cup (NHL called penalties and disallowed goals if someone was in the goal crease) and the two years after the lockout (NHL called the obstruction penalty). Outside of those years it seems like they have been average at best and we as fans talk about how we get pushed around and "need more grit."

I think he stays just because is is probably our 3rd best center. I agree he needs seasoning yet and to mature a little more but who fills his spot if he goes down? Hectic? What if there is an injury? If they do send him back to juniors can they recall him or is he in the juniors for the year?

I would like to see what Brennan has to offer. He put up decent numbers in Rochester and showed a spine. Myers just has me at a loss for words. Stafford showed against Hartnell just show up if you want to be taken seriously.

Is he still hurt? He looks slow and uninspired. I thought the turning point was how he responded from the Gerbe hit. Just as spineless as the Gaustad response on Miller last year. From that moment on the Hurricanes were flying.

Brennan just signed a one year deal. What does that make him at the end of this year, ufa or rfa?

I'd like the Sabres to get Parros and Carkner. My lineup would look like this: Vanek, Hodgeson, Pomminstein Stafford, Ennis, Foligno Leino, Grigornko, Tropp Parros, McCormick, Kaleta Myers, McNabb Regher, Sekera Leopold, Brennan/Weber/Carkner I think the additions of Foligo, Tropp,Parros, McNabb and Carkner would make us a much tougher team to play against. Roy can probably be moved at some point. I know several people here don't think he's worth much but anything less than a #1 or a player.

Take out Lucic or Chara. The two guys Gaustad and Myers were afraid to stand up against.

I don't think you run the goalie but I think the smaller player should throw a hip check or two on the bigger players. Just the size difference put them around the knees. I'll bet the speed and intensity of the checks are slowed a little. Also, Gaustad and Myers shoud be ashamed of themselves for not stepping up with some kind of response.
