  1. This morning Paul Hamilton said that Ted was finally back to his normal self and joking around and smiling after the trade deadline had ended. Not sure why. He's a tree hugger. He's back just coaching and knows who his team is. I expect him to sign in about a week.

He sure can coach crappy players. Who knows if he can coach stars.

This is an important point. There is a difference, certainly. I'm guessing he's up for the task. Damn sure like to test the theory on some legitimate stars before I make up my mind for sure, though.

  2. This should end the silly irrational debate about who "won" the trade, whatever that means. Kassian is nothing more than a goon with better hands than John Scott. Whip dee phuckin' dee.

There is no comparison to be made about who's the better "hockey" player. Kassian will never threaten the level or cerebral hockey sense of Hodgson. That's where it all starts. Cody is light years ahead.

  3. A position created specifically for LaFontaine really makes it sound like he was intended to be a figurehead.

I disagree. A position created for PLF makes it sound like TP really valued his potential contributions to the organization and seeing as how Patty turned down the GM job and TP was determined to have him on board, it makes perfect sense.

The very nature of PLF's stature in the game of hockey almost makes him a figurehead by default.

I had an interesting theory floated my way yesterday, by a Bruins fan, of all people. He said he thought maybe the league (Bettman) was seeing the clusterfluge taking place in Buffalo and sent PLF here as a cleaner (think Harvey Keitel in Pulp Fiction). Once everything was in place, they used the convenient excuse of the Miller trade to extract him and send him back to the NHL mothership.

I don't know if I buy it, but it's at least thoughtful and interesting.

    Patty is Mr. Wolf.

  4. Black confirmed on WGR this morning that they created the position of president for Pat. They are, indeed, making it up as they go.

    Why not?

Sez you. It may have been a tactical level decision just to get PLF on the payroll since Patty didn't want to be GM. Make up a title just for him, to give him the room he needed to do what he had to do. It may have always been a "special consultant" kind of position that was never going to be refilled once PLF resigned. On the other hand, maybe they thought he would last a while in the position so they gave him a lofty title.

But I don't see creating that position just for him a violation of any sacred rule of business, especially a business as full of exceptions as hockey.

It was announced at PLF's introductory press conference that the position was created solely for PLF. TP appreciated Patty's honesty about his readiness for the GM position so TP created a new position for him. You do that for guys of PLF's stature after they spent time on your yacht talking about your team's direction.

  5. The obvious question(s) the Buffalo media did NOT ask Ted Black, and has yet to be answered

    Was PLF asked to resign?

    Was PLF PRESSURED to resign?

The Sabres with their non-disclosure agreement about the very terms of his resignation seem very very much in damage control mode, and trying to 'shape the dialog'.

The very next time Terry Pegula steps in front of a microphone, he should be hit with these questions, and probing follow up questions that don't allow him to avoid a direct answer.

    It's not that complicated.

    PLF was FIRED.

PLF was then asked to sign the resignation.

Happens all the time in corporate America.

  6. What is there to let go? We're discussing stuff.

Today should be like Christmas Eve for hockey fans....trying to sleep, but waiting to see what is under the tree. Well for me at least, opening the presents today is going to be lackluster because Grandpa just died the other day. The sad thing is, there is some reason to believe Dad pulled the plug on him to inherit his assets. It makes for a very conflicting situation.

    Carry on.

  7. There are rumblings that Battista and Black's involvement in hockey related decisions directly lead to PLF quitting.

There are also rumblings that PLF wanted to do some things that DID require TP and other front office buy-in, but he pissed some people off when he decided not to check with them first and he didn't like it when TP asked why.

  8. When the organization stops it's assault on the intelligence of the fans and begins to understand their fiduciary responsibility in owning a prized community asset, I will then stop analyzing their dysfunction. I thought the enemy occupation was over. I was in full support the past few months. I DON'T have it in me anymore going forward if Nolan leaves. Sometimes you just have to cut your loses and retreat. If Ted has a 3 year deal sitting there and turns it down, that is all I need to know.

    Everyone is different.

Perfectly understandable and rational. We all hope Ted Nolan stays. He does wonders with a young team and that's what's needed at the moment.

For health reasons, you may want to let it go in the meantime.

    GO SABRES!!!

  9. I'm not making too much out of it. But it's possibly a little hint into what kind of guy Battista is. Bucky's point is valid — Murray signs players, not Battista. The nugget about an alleged email from Battista referrring to himself as vice president of hockey operations, when that's not his title, is also weird.

Weird indeed. Really bad form to be enjoying this too much at the height of the turmoil last week. It's great to have fun, but there's also a time and place. And that time and place was a time for class and careful reflection. I get the impression Battista lacks class. This guy sounds like a classic pro sports wannabe. I can only hope TP can recognize this and give Battista a CLEARLY defined, UNOBSTRUCTIVE role.

    GO SABRES!!!

  10. He certainly wouldn't be the center piece. But if Nolan can get him to compete on a consistent basis, he can be an important cog in the wheel with his size and skill level.

    @SportsnetSpec

Out of CGY, Hudler not out of play. Could help a lot of teams, esp CHI with Hossa hurt. Would love to move Wideman contract. Unlikely.

I agree with this. As I said yesterday, there are worse things than seeing if Nolan can work his magic with Stewart. There is no reason at all for TM to cave on Stewart.

    GO SABRES!!!

  11. Drnkirsh did a nice job there. I have no problem with anyone here questioning those things on either side. What I did take offense to was the parading of concussion, crazy talk coming from the staff at GR, who gets 70% of their revenue off the Sabres, in a seemingly organized fashion. The tweets were from multiple people in the same timeframe...then the convos start. Pat Lafontaine has been silenced, and you had the Sabres management present their side.

For some of us....we spent 16 years in prison, got released, and 3 months later the parole officer takes us back to jail without any due process and won't tell us what we're in for.

The talk is calming down and should end. I've decided that I am following Ted Nolan's lead. If he decides he is able to work for the team after what happened, then that is good enough for me. After watching his reactions, I know he is having a time with it. He is my proxy. He goes, I do. My heart is already out of it for this team again.

So then, is it safe to assume they aren't worth the emotional investment necessary to continue the assault on the organization? Can you let it go?

  12. @bcostellothn

Prospects 6-10 in Future Watch 2014: 6. Kuznetsov, Wsh, 7. Ristolainen, Buf, 8. Zadorov, Buf, 9. Wennberg, Clb, 10. Mantha, Det.

How nice is it to see our future #1 pair and co-first round draft picks in that top 10?

Thanks 26. I look for your handle every time and I'm never disappointed.

  13. Here is what we know. At some point last week something Happened that made PLF question staying with the team. Some sort of breaking point. Most insiders say Miller trade was a non factor. Nolan signing also a non factor. After last week PLF went MIA and then at some point over the weekend was either asked to resign or quit of his own accord. What sparked the initial incident and what ultimately happened Saturday won't become clear for years.

I think that "something" was the last in a string of "somethings" that occurred over the course of PLF's tenure. A straw that broke the camel's back if you will. The camel being TP.

  14. "Disgraceful, you are better than this"?...who anointed you lord and master of the moral high ground? You sound like the Seattle City Council, who took it upon themselves to ban the words "brown bag", as in brown bag lunch, from the local lexicon because the PC blockheads in their we-know-better-than-you omniscience decided the term was racially disparaging.

Go easy on millbank. He's a class act and is just suggesting we take a look at ourselves before we throw words out there.

Regarding the bold text, is that true? Did Seattle really do that? Unbelievable.

  15. Just in time for his UFA year to hit in 2015 an sign with a contender for more $. Unfortunately, the only way to get players for a rebuild is to lock up their rights for multiple years.

Well, if Stewart should end up being a highly coveted FA, then it means Nolan did his job with him and we'd have the inside track on retaining him. Nice problem to have. There are worse things than Stewart getting it together.

  16. Hoo boy. This from a TO hockey writer:

After talking to a number of people close to LaFontaine and others in the Sabres organization, it is clear the situation is the result of a toxic mix of an owner who is too much of a fan for his team’s good, who surrounded himself with a surplus of advisers whose motives must be questioned, and a former NHLer who needed neither the job nor the salary, nor the headaches of dealing with a fan-boy owner and his cronies.
