  1. Gotta echo the others that have said Zadorov and Risto are our best D pair. At 19 and 20 years old, respectively! And before we chalk that up to "that's not saying much" they are both in the plus column since being paired which is amazing given the amount of ice time they are seeing and the sheer number of goals by which we are being outscored. 19 and 20 years of age? I think these guys are gonna have a lot of last laughs before it's over.

  2. Connor McDavid: 15g, 34a, 17games, 2.88ptpg

    Jack Eichel: 5g, 8a, 7games, 1.86ptpg

These guys are good, scary good.

I hope we all really appreciate just how hard it is for a true freshman to be among the top scorers in the nation. He just turned 18 for crissakes.

  3. McDeichel.

It just sounds better. And again, I'd be happy with either of them. Eichel is a long strider with deceptive speed and puck control and has great vision. It'll be interesting to watch him vs. Canada in the under 20 world junior tourney in a couple months.

But perhaps the biggest thing to remember is, as somebody posted above, neither of McDeichel will be a savior. But in a rebuild, you have to have that cornerstone in place and both these guys have cornerstone written all over them.

We are gonna have a ton of cap room to help surround them with top-notch veteran talent as well as the consensus best prospect pool in the game. And an owner that will spare no expense in doing whatever it takes.

  4. Was Perrault considered the best of his generation?

That's a different question than "Was Perreault considered a generational talent coming out of juniors?" He was.

McDavid is considered a generational talent coming out. It remains to be seen if he'll be the best player of his generation.

  5. I noticed in today's stats that Girgs is only -2 on the year in all 13 games played so far. I don't hold up plus/minus as the be all, end all stat, but in this case, it's amazing and truly telling of his effort on the ice. A -2, while on the ice for an average of 17+ minutes a game on a team with a goal differential like ours? I think that's an accomplishment.

And he's STILL only 20 years old. Can't wait until he's a captain.

  6. Just keep the big kid up, continue his intense training regimen, and play him a few times in each 10 game segment if you feel the game is still too much for him. He's gaining benefits from being at this level that he can't get in juniors. Yes, playing time is important, but that benefit is outweighed by the drawback of losing control over his development to the KHL.

  7. Stewart has appeared to step up his game recently, I wonder if Tim Murray told him there are teams interested but they want to see more out of you.

If this is what it took for Stewart to step up his game, they can't get rid of him soon enough.

  8. Proof that anyone, and I do mean ANYONE, can be a sports columnist.

I'd be willing to bet this guy never saw him play one game for the Sabres.

Well, they were right about one thing: Reinhart won't learn anything new playing at that level and Murray knows this. But the alternative of playing him limited minutes in limited situations while risking his health due to his stature, wasn't going to teach him much, either. At least he's playing meaningful, if not developmental minutes with his junior team.

  9. Justin Bailey: 52nd overall 2013, 6'3" 200lbs RW. 12games 9g, 7a for Kitchener OHL

    http://youtu.be/2YD0Saa9j_Y

Thanks for this clip. I think this kid is gonna be something when he learns to play the game. One of the idiots at WGR went to see the Otters to check out McDavid and Strome. They happened to be playing Kitchener and he said the best player on the ice that night was Bailey. I realize that's one game and it's an idiot from WGR but still, that's a helluva thing to say given how good McDavid and Strome are.

  10. After this season, especially if Murray gets his superstar in either Mc David or Eichel, I fully expect him to start spending some of the 28 Million he has in cap room for next season. In addition prospects and picks will be traded for NHL ready talent. I would expect playoffs after the 2016-17 season.

I believe this is his strategy as well. There is no need to go on a spending spree for talented FAs until he has a solid new core in place. He's got a nice compliment of glue guys already. And the consensus best pipeline of young talent he can parlay into solid veteran players if he so chooses. He's got to hit on one of the superstars coming out the next draft though.

  11. First of all, to those yipping (not freeman), the post was in response to the snark saying that 2 examples of prospective #1 NFL picks ruining their career before they got drafted was irrelevant. SO I made it relevant.

Many here were penciling in Rienhart as the #1 center. I know it came with a wrning that he wasn't an explosive skater, but he doesn't even look like an NHL skater at this point. I'm actually shocked.

We've been having the former GM, the team president, the Pegula owned radio network, and many fans here blowing smoke up our skirts the past 3 seasons about how awesome it will be to get high draft picks and how it will lead the team to the promised land. Well....you have the BEST FORWARD in an entire draft class, and the kid is worthless currently. You could put Charlie Parker in the sax section of a junior high band and he will get drowned out by the wall of incoherent noise. You could also put Stanley Czublowtarski in the sax section of a high school band, and he'd fit right in. So far, looks like the Sabres have another Czublowtarski.

Sounds like Reinhart really let you down. But if you haven't seen him flashing his intelligence on the ice, his single greatest attribute coming out and the sole reason he was drafted #2 overall, I don't know what to tell you. Your music metaphor makes sense; he's playing Mozart and his linemates can't read music.

  12. So Hodgson gets demoted to the fourth line, gets asked after practice if he is upset about it, and the answer is no. Shouldn't he be upset and pissed about off about being demoted? Wouldn't that be the way a coach would want his player to respond.

So all the juicing, detoxing, and weightlifting with the great Gary Roberts that I heard so much about, really means NOTHING when it comes to stepping on the ice.

Just another guy with a big fat contract courtesy of Regier.

Agreed. Major red flag and NOT the response of a winner.

    GO SABRES!!!

  13. McDeichel.

I'll gladly take either half. I don't care if we win the lottery or not, but finishing last is the only way of assuring we get either.

I also think TM is gonna parlay those two other #1s into something nice in one of the deepest drafts in a long time.

    GO SABRES!!!

  14. There is a difference between saying "these guys aren't trying hard enough" and "these guys aren't any good." Since Ted almost always has to use the former as code for the latter (the pee wee remark and today's radio appearance being the exceptions), it's tough to tell what he's really trying to say.

That and he talks like his mouth is full of marbles most of the time.

I know he doesn't have a talented team, but I think he lost whatever mojo he had as a coach regardless. He actually looks and sounds clueless most of the time. I won't miss him when TM finds his replacement.

    GO SABRES!!!

  15. His play may be disappointing to me but I do not find it surprising. His game is predicated on his ability to think and react before things happen. It will easily take more than 9 games for his brain to catch up and understand what it needs to do. A couple years from now he will be doing things that make us glad we drafted him 2nd overall. If 21 year old Reinhart is playing roughly the same perimeter game with little impact, than yes we can call him a bust.

While I certainly agree with everyone that says SR needs to mature physically, I've seen NUMEROUS examples of his hockey acumen at work on the ice. His biggest problem is that NONE of his linemates are at the same level in that regard and aren't able to keep up in the anticipation department. We all knew he wasn't an "explosive" player, but he's been as advertised otherwise. It's not his fault that his fellow fourth line scrubs can't see the game like he does.

    GO SABRES!!!

  16. The season is much shorter though. Those extra 20 or so games in the junior schedule will shed some light on the durability of a player.

I think that's a valid point as well. At least from a durability standpoint. But an extra 20 games against less mature, less physical competition doesn't do much to hone your game, imo. So while he may play less games, Eichel will be playing against lots of guys over 20 years old on a much more physically demanding level on a game to game basis.

    GO SABRES!!!
