  1. The Minnesota and Ottawa scenarios is why it is a risky proposition to acquire players in a trade whose sole purpose is to be flipped for more assets. If things fall though (as they appear to have in both MIN and OTT) then you are stuck with players that you didn't really covet and aren't part of the rebuild plans.

There were some big talk about how the flipped players were going to get even more return than the potential return of just trading Miller/Ott. Now we're stuck or selling at a discount.

I understand and while I don't care to much about Halak one way or another, Nolan just may be able to get the most out of Stewart.

  2. Interesting. And possible. But given Uncle Terry's willingness to write checks, this seems doubtful. Far better chance that they essentially forced him to resign and bought his silence.

I'm not fan of Bucky, but I saw that he's calling out TB. I actually saw that after I posted what I posted above. Just because Bucky's a boob doesn't mean it's wrong to say TB is full of sh!t.

Nothing wrong with Bucky doing that at all. It's his job.

But he's just as full of crap as those he accuses of the same when he says he isn't choosing sides. And that make me suspect EVERYTHING he posits as a journalist.

  3. From what I am gathering, the issue appeared to be difference of opinion on how long and the depth of the rebuild. PLF and TN were here under the impression it would be a quick one to two year rebuild. Murray was hired, probably told that's what they think it will take, and he probably said he would need to dig deeper before he would know for sure but he would be open to whatever the best way to go would be. Murray apparently did his work and came back that it needed to be a 3 to 4 year rebuild, not a quick one and there was no way that would work. PLF disagrees and now there becomes a fundamental difference of opinion on how to go about it. The Sabres back Murray, the guy PLF hired, PLF says this isn't what I signed up for and resigns/throws a hissy fit and gets fired. Nolan also was here expecting it was going to be quick, but now with a 3 year extension offered, basically is going to be here to do all the heavy work and lifting and then potentially replaced by Murray's handpicked coach once they get back to a level where they are competing for division titles and or championships. So now Nolan is in the position to take a job where he is going to do all the hard work but potentially not be in position to reap the rewards of that work which is probably what PLF is telling him and why he is hemming and hawing now about it...

I see your point, but I'd bet PLF had absolutely no issue with Tim Murray. Not even a little, regardless of the perceived length of time the rebuild would take.

If Nolan needs to get PLF's reasoning to keep the job or not then I'm sorry, as much as I love Teddy, he's not the man you're looking for.

  4. The above presupposes that PLF's resignation was a voluntary one. I don't think there's enough information available at this time to decide that. After the T.D. on Wednesday, I hope we learn more of the backstory. Hopefully all this churning drama won't negatively impact Mr. Murray's ability to get trade offers, or make trades.

Of course PLF's resignation wasn't voluntary; he was fired and given the option to sign a resignation.

Could be many reasons for being fired, but TP is not in the habit of making reckless firings. Indeed, he tends to hang onto people too long.

Technically, Ted Black was telling the truth: there is no discord NOW, but I'll wager there was a TON of discord leading up to the decision by TP to fire PLF.

  5. Sure. It could have gotten so nasty that Pat could have well earned a demand to resign. But it wouldn't be an issue without ownership meddling, right?

Hey, if they're truly running the show now, and the involvement of ownership is the obligatory heads-up when a major move is afoot/here are some checks to sign, great. I would be happy. Patrick is the key here. If he stays, breathe a sigh of relief. He doesn't need this gig at his age; Murray does.

It could also be an issue of PLF overstepping his bounds as well. That doesn't require meddling by ownership so much as intervention.

    Agree about Patrick.

  6. It isn't the lack of a president that bothers me per se — although I have argued for it and like the firewall it can represent between ownership and the GM. It's the idea of not having a president, then having one, then not having one. It shouldn't give anyone confidence that smart hockey people are running the show.

I think Murray and Patrick are the epitome of smart hockey people running the show.

  7. No surprise, I'm with Ghost on TM's unsolicited reference to the owner. Also curious that congratulatory calls to TM would reference advice on how to deal with the owner. It's just a hair short of confirmation for me that this whole brouhaha involved strife between Pat and Terry/Terry's advisors. Sometimes the obvious answer is served up on a plate, and TM did that, probably because he's so honest and doesn't measure his words that carefully.

No new president? SDS, you were right. They are making this up as they go. God help us.

Let's assume this is true, that this entire thing involved strife between TP/inner circle and PLF, which I'm also inclined to believe is absolutely the case here. Is it absolutely beyond the realm of possibility that PLF conducted himself in such a way as to necessitate his firing? That a pattern of behavior had emerged over the course of the last 100 days that his boss didn't agree with? And if so, does that make his boss wrong in the decision? Because the last thing TP does is fire people off the cuff; indeed, he tends to hang on to them too long in spite of reality.

  8. I'm under the impression that they wanted to keep this under wraps until after the deadline but someone leaked it and they had to preform damage control.

I think the preformed damage control poorly though.

Love it. "Preformed" damage control. Like whenever they need to, they go to the back room and grab a can of "preformed" damage control off the shelf.

  9. Nope....Lafontaine was supposedly MIA since Tuesday. The Sabres had no story to run with yesterday after 6 hours of national media, local, fan, alumni, and bishop speculation and bickering. If it was cut and dry, the Sabres would have had a media plan crafted by Wednesday and rolled out an orderly separation.

Look at the grumpiness and clumsiness of the press conference today.

Pat Lafontaine is tough to deal with.....after all you knew was Darcy Regier.......

Save yourself the time and trouble. Patty's gone. I'm over it. And I don't need to find a villain here. I'm only concerned about where this team is going moving forward. I'll leave it to you guys to read all the tea leaves and predict the future.

    GO SABRES!!!

  10. Oh...you got the GR memo that went out at 6PM last night?

No. Just asking. I know you need to find a demon here and that it has to be the suits in the "inner circle." I get that. I also know that it can be hard to accept the fact that someone we all love can actually be offensive at times. I get that, too. But the more I look at this, the more I'm convinced it's a Patty issue more than anything else.

    GO SABRES!!!

  11. I firmly believe that Pat Lafontaine is the type of person who would not leave at such a crucial time as a few days before the trade deadline when your team is about to have as big of a makeover as it has since 1970. He just wouldn't do that. He would go and take a vacation to a secluded desert island for a week and the press release would have come out March 6th. That is what is so concerning here. I think even a scumbag would have the couth to wait a week.

I want to hear from everyone. It's not fair to assume guilt either on the Sabres or Lafontaine. It may be in the best interests of everyone in the long term, but the timing just rekindles every feeling of distrust, cronyism, dysfunction, and politics that has hung over this franchise for far too long. I was just getting comfortable with the idea of being a giddy fan again, and then reality strikes. I got a call last night from a personal situation that is fairly big which mimicked my feelings about the Sabres. Always go with your gut....think it out, but go with your gut....

How well do you know PLF? If he capable of flying off the handle at subordinates a la Polian? Is he capable of doing things without the consent of his boss and when he's rebuffed for doing them, flies off the handle in a disrespectful manner?

We'd all like to think that Patty the player and Patty the public face is who he is all the time. I'm just not convinced he can't be a dick when he wants to be and that he doesn't get even more pissed when called out for it.

His timing here is bad to say the least. Why couldn't he have waited it out indeed?

    GO SABRES!!!

  12. I think Nolan will let the rest of the season play out and see how his relationship with Murray develops before making a decision.

That would be the smart thing to do. It would also be smart of Murray to put a term on the offer though. He doesn't need to be in coaching limbo waiting for Nolan to make a decision. But I think Nolan's gonna end up taking it.

    GO SABRES!!!

  13. Watched Nolans presser and no question he's emotional and alludes to something big that happened. We all know something happened obviously but the way he states it almost sounds like someone close was diagnosed with a bad illness ( an analogy ) whether thats because his good friend resigned or just the circumstances surrounding it that rattled him, who knows. Methinks he's rethinking his desire to be employed with people that would operate in this manner.

On a side note can't they employ somebody to operate a boom mike so we can hear the damn questions being asked ?

That's part of Teddy's makeup; wearing his heart squarely on his sleeve. Once the emotion of the events ebbs, I don't think he'll have any trouble accepting his extension. I appreciate his loyalty to PLF, but my guess is that his loyalty to his players trumps that.

    GO SABRES!!!

  14. The idea (upthread) that this was a contemplated departure is farcical. Something, or some things, happened and PLF quit as a result of it/them.

I don't think PLF quit at all. I think he was fired. And I also think it was not without cause. And I certainly don't think this was about one singular event, but rather a pattern of events that established itself soon after he came aboard.

    GO SABRES!!!

  15. Even if he does give straight talk the radical speculation will gain a lot of support.

This is so true. Nobody can tell everybody everything they all want to hear. That's why you limit your exposure in the first place. Now that doesn't stop the wild speculation but it's often best to never give a shred of validity to speculation by acknowledging it.

    GO SABRES!!!

  16. The problem is that there was an impression that the president of hockey ops position was created in a smart move to create a layer between ownership and GM. That was probably a generous interpretation on the part of some. Remember that Pat turned Terry down when the GM job was offered. Now it looks like the president position was created for Patty. (That is, if it isn't filled.)

I think if WAS created entirely for Patty because he DID turn down the GM job as you said. Again, if there's a realization that with a GM and adviser in place and there may not be a need to maintain a position solely created for someone no longer in the organization, I can see why it doesn't need to be filled.

Maybe they'll just keep an empty chair in the conference room in his honor.

    GO SABRES!!!

  17. It looks terrible. Either you identified a preferred organizational structure for your team or you are just making ###### up as you go.

Sure, there's an element of making it up as you go simply by virtue of the fact the position was made up to begin with. I see nothing wrong with a reassessment of the position and the conclusion that it may no longer be necessary. Companies do this all the time. With Murray on as GM and Patrick in house as an adviser, the need for a formal President of Hockey Operations may not exist. Depends on how you look at it, I guess. I just don't see the big problem here.

    GO SABRES!!!

  18. That's great!

Either the organization structure was set up to have a president because it made sense, or we ended up with a president for some ulterior motive. The difference is important. If no one replaces PLF, it looks really bad.

Patty's position didn't even exist before TP created it for him. Not sure how returning to a previous structure looks really bad.

I think we'll find out that Patty went all "Polian" on somebody. I hope he didn't use the C-word on TP's daughter.

    GO SABRES!!!
