  1. You guys gotta relax. Lucic fights. All guys who fight notice a right hook like the one Kassian threw against the Philly goon and remember it when they play the Sabres again, especially when they know that the Sabres fans are just dying to see Lucic's nose bleed. I'm not saying Lucic was afraid to play against kassian, so quit the attitude. I merely state that Lucic, as well as everyone else who makes it a habit to drop the gloves, knows that Kassian's got the right cross down and better watch it next time they drop the gloves with him, is all.

How else should we have intepreted, "Lucic just breathed a sigh of relief, too?"

Quit the attitude? WTF are you talking about?

    GO SABRES!!!

  2. Yup, and he is gonna LOVE the Western Conference. You know Lucic just breathed a sigh of relief, too.

That's laughable. Yeah, I'm sure Lucic lost sleep thinking about the prospects of playing against the mighty Kassian. Even if Kassian kicked his ass from one end of the rink to another (and I'd love to see that), it wouldn't make any difference in my opinion of Kassian's lack of overall physical play to date.

    GO SABRES!!!

  3. The style he had in juniors that got him so noticed and recognized as a force to be reckoned with. The guy that took a few bombs from Sestito before dropping him like a bad habit. I think he will be a more physical player in a year or two of being in the NHL.

True, he got recognized for being a good fighter and one who won't back down. And that's a plus to be sure. But he had no problem doing that in the pros, either.

The style he needs to develop is one of toughness at all times on the ice. He's good at using his body to keep the puck but not very good at winning puck battles to gain possession as of yet. He doesn't finish checks with any kind of regularity and is seldom one to initiate contact from what I've seen. He's got good hands and is a pretty good passer but is a liability in his own end much of the time. He's got great size but doesn't seem willing to bring it every night.

Foligno on the other hand, does. Why would Lindy try to coach it out of one player and not the other? True, Kassian's past problems with suspensions and the law in Ontario for a bar fight may make him a marked man in some respects but I doubt anyone has ever told him to tone it down. Just be smart about it.

Other than a few big hits in juniors and a couple of fights, his legend is mostly one of myth if you ask me. I just haven't seen this awesome physical presence on the ice on a conistent basis. Indeed, with his size, he is often conspicous in his absence.

    GO SABRES!!!

  4. Or he will get one when he faces his old mates later this week. I bet Vancouver gives him his balls back and tells him to play his style.

    What style is that, exactly?

I'll give him another Gordy Howe hat-trick against the Sabres but I'm gonna chalk up a hat-trick for Hodgson against his former squad as well.

    GO SABRES!!!

  5. Apparently Kassian left quite an impression on Markus Foligno.

    marcus foligno@marcusfoligno

Goodluck to my buddy Zack Kassian #exroomy #gunnamisshim have a great time in # VAN......tripod gone @nabber03

I'm sure the Canucks are hoping Foligno left more of an impression on Kassian. Foligno seems to be having no problem playing the kind of physical game that we all wanted to see from Kassian on a regular basis.

That said, buck says Kassian racks up a Gordy Howe hat-trick in his first game with the Canucks. Trades have a way of adding jam to a player's game for that first game or two.

    GO SABRES!!!

  6. Agreed with expectations/raw talent but Foligno is bringing the physical game consistently and putting up points - 14g 20a in 54 games. In October/November he looked like a bust (early I know). Lately he's leading the team.

Thanks for the report. I'm liking Foligno's trajectory. He'll have more room on the big squad now that Kassian is gone.

    GO SABRES!!!

  7. Totally agree with Rob's point there. (I'm listening too.) Guys like Kaleta and Tropp showed up and started hitting immediately. Kassian really didn't as a Sabre or as an Amerk. He still could (we saw flashes) but maybe he's more legend than real deal. Great trade if that turns out to be the case.

Wonder if they're still selling BADASSIAN shirts at the Walden Galleria.

I've also been appreciating the posts from Inkman and others that have been following Kassian in Rochester. He wasn't playing up to his size and toughness down there as well. I'm glad that he won't back down in a fight. That's a plus. But mucking it up in the corners, winning puck battles and routinely finishing checks is a far better indicator of toughness. His reputation was built largely on a couple of incidents in juniors.

I wish the kid well but he's no where near as developed at Hodgson and doesn't fill as critical a position for our team.

    GO SABRES!!!

  8. I doubt that.

This is a prototypical Sabres type player. Some offensive ability, some size that he doesn't use. He a hybrid of Roy and Stafford, two players that fans would love to drive to the airport.

This has the potential of being another Leino type move. You're taking a kid that looked good surrounded by Vancouver's talent, now he is playing with a roster full of limited offensive ability.

I am more impressed by getting a first rounder for Gaustad. This move, I'd rather have Kassian.

If you're talking in terms of physical ability then he's even better than I thought.

But since you're not, I'd like to know HTF you have ANY friggin' idea as to what kind of heart this kid has? Please bless us all with your 2008 NHL draft scouting reports.

If the kid proves he's as heartless as Roy and Stafford then by all means please come back and bask in your 'I told you so, 20/20 hindsight' genius.

Has to be a new record for finding the cloud in the silver lining. Did Darcy or Lindy run over your dog? Several times?

  9. Actually Ferraro and two of the others stated 'Vancouver got the better of the trade' when it was initially reported. The quotes seem to be balancing out more in the later coverage, though a lot of that may be because they just had Hodgson on the phone.

I thought their comments were grounded in how the Canucks couldn't answer the toughness bell against the Bruins in the SC finals. They focused an awful lot on that aspect of what Kassian brings them. I still say that Hodgson fills a bigger need for us than Kassian does for them both immediately and in the future.

    GO SABRES!!!

  10. We'll need to see how he adjusts to drawing a little more attention now that he's not playing behind the Sedins. We might as well try to build instant chemistry with Vanek though.

Excellent point and you're absolutely right. He's just a rookie getting minimal minutes in Vancouver and I would be surprised if he played top line minutes for any length of time although stranger things have happened. It would be great to have him and Vanek gel right away but I'm willing to give the kid some time.

    GO SABRES!!!

  11. TSN guys saying that Hodgson is in the mix for Calder Trophy this year (though they don't give him a shot of winning it).

They also seemed to think Vancouver got the better of the trade.

Sabres desperately needed centers. Would prefer to see a larger one but Hogdson will fill a need.

Rookie of the Month in January. Something to build on.

    GO SABRES!!!

  12. $4M should be enough motivation. For the real players, just the game itself is enough motivation.

    ^This.

It may sound simplistic, but motivation is a personal choice. It's just not a coach's job to constantly have to motivate his players. That's not to say that coaches don't lose teams due to being tuned out, etc. That happens and maybe it's happening with Lindy. But a player's motivation MUST come from within or it won't come at all.

I think Prince Nonchalant simply doesn't care enough about being a hockey player. Let alone a good one. Oh, he may well bust a nut or two for a while for a new coach but players like him will usually revert to form.

It's a shame, too. Clearly talented, clearly capable. Clearly just doesn't give a crap.

  13. ...Trolls are very obvious - most of us know one when we see one, eventually. Shame on you calling others "whiners" and "complainers" those who stick around here season after season, whose ideas differ from yours, but whose passion for the team is clearly as hot as yours. Perhaps you don't understand the point-of-view, but then be big about it and admit it, rather than pedestrian and mock it. There's no shame in not being able to relate to what someone is saying, so long as the point in question is lucid and part of the conversation (or, in other words, not trolling or just out-and-out misinformed and foolish). That is where interesting conversations BEGIN - right now some of you are shooting down the interesting conversations before they begin.

Are you suggesting I'm a troll because I call The Stormcloud whiners on occasion? Like I and many others have been doing since Scott started this thing back in '96? When The Stormcloud calls me Kool-aid drinker are they trolling as well? Is chz a troll when she suggests someone will have reason to "bitch" for another couple years? Directly calling into question someone's bona fides as a fan by saying he is apathetic about the team is furthering interesting conversation? Only Team Kool-aid is incapable of understanding an opposing view? Is Team Stormcloud just misunderstood because their message is just too complex? That seems to be your message here. Welcome to the league, Team Sanctimonious.

    GO SABRES!!!

  14. Years of posting history prove you otherwise.

And yet your years of piling up the whining posts would seem to prove me right as well. Unless you honestly think that your positive posts outnumber your negative posts? I suppose there's something to be said for being a storm cloud with an occasional silver lining though. It ain't all bad even it is most of the time.

  15. I picture a sticky paged Game Night program.

chz, I missed this earlier. Too funny for words.

    GO SABRES!!!

I agree completely with the bolded part, except that you are a bit off on the meaning of "reactionaries."

LOL! Guilty as charged. That's what happens when I get lazy with the language sometimes. Certainly didn't mean to inject any political overtones here.

Anyway, one who would want to make wholesale changes and blow up the team due to the performance of the team up to this point, would be having a knee-jerk reaction.

    GO SABRES!!!

  16. If you blow it up he'll have a good couple more years to bitch about things. /apathy

You know, that' true. What would The Stormcloud do with a Stanley Cup winner? Nothing.

The more I read about how much the Sabres suck, the more I'm convinced they want, no need, the Sabres to suck. It fills a void or something. Sad, really.

    Apathy indeed.

    GO SABRES!!!

  17. By your logic, the only way to affect change on this team is by trading the entire roster, firing all of the Sabres staff, and moving the team to a completely different city. Is that delimited enough for you? Or would you like to act even more ridiculous today?

Well, there's the fact that if everything is blown up then it would be another several year wait, AT BEST, before they win the cup. Not to mention no playoffs this year. Unless he thinks that replacing the coaches and roster means getting all playoff caliber coaches and players in return.

    Changes? Yes.

Meaningful changes? Indeed. I'd consider moving two assistant Cs as meaningful.

Wholesale, blow it up changes? Only for knee-jerk reactionaries.

    GO SABRES!!!

  18. Here's what people aren't talking about when it comes to the standings. People like to fall back on "last year at this time they went on a run!" At this point in time however, 12 teams are in the thick of it and Tampa is not far off. As the conference games start to pile up now, almost EVERY game means that the Sabres will lose ground to at least one team in the East. There is no scoreboard rooting, unless you assume your goal is now just to sneak in the playoffs, so you root for the real teams like Boston, Philly and Pitt to run away with things. When the Sabres lose a game, someone is going to take 2 points from them, as well as a possible 6 other teams. Then you have the Blessed Bettman bonus point.

You NEED to go on a run. You can't rely on other teams to crap the bed because too many teams have already distanced themselves and almost everyone is alive. If you conceed the division to Boston, you need to battle 9 other teams for the 4th seed and home ice advantage. You need to battle 9 teams for 5 spots. You need to battle 9 teams for the 8th spot.

We are 40% through the season.

Ah, I see. The Sabres control their own destiny.

  19. I tried to tell him this like two weeks ago. It's a lost cause.

Gotta love Liger and his gang of millenial misfits.

Starting revolutions and changing the world one byte at a time (as long as the facebook servers don't crash).

    I miss him already.
