  1. Bogosian was diving in his own zone to clear a puck at the end of that Pens game. I think he may be the eventual captain if the team as a whole progresses the next few years.

We haven't seen a guy with his size, smoothness, talent, and grit on the backend in forever. He has Zhitnik's skillset and plug body, with Schoenfeld's edge and positioning. Myers was Petr Svboda meets Mike Wilson.

I wish Roby was still on the broadcast team, because he would be circling him on the telestrator almost every game then have to call his doctor because it was more than 4 hours......

    Oustanding!

Needless to say, I agree with your assessment of Bogo entirely. His effort vs. the Penguins, especially near the end, reminded me of Girgensons blocking shots when his team was down by 11 goals in the third period. You simply can't teach or coach that kind of hockey character. I doubt Myers will ever reach his level on the D side of things. I don't care how much offense he brings, he's not a winger, and so it's a wash for what he give up in his own end.

  2. Shrader's idea, and I thought it'd be fun.

     Here's the idea:

Edit: Post other people's cliche's make this into a SS cliche thread

  3. The trade was Lemieux for Kane and Bogosian. That is what was going through Murray's head I am sure. That's why I like Murray. If you don't "play the game the right way", you are written to zero.

Heck, everyone makes fun of Ted Nolan for playing guys like Flynn and Mitchell in key situations.......anyone watching the Montreal series or scoresheets?

The fact that people were so in the dark about Bogosian here in Buffalo shocked me. There was almost zero mention of him the day of the trade from any media and most fans. The reason he was a disappointment in Winny is because they already had a guy like him in Byff and expected 50 points a year. I was more excited about him than Kane, and I'm happy about Kane. If I was a kid again, I'd be rockin a Bogosian jersey from day 1. I just hope these 2 don't get turned off by another year of crap hockey.

I was ecstatic to get Bogosian, whom I think is a better player for us than Myers by far. In his first game with us, he had 25% of Myers' total hits to date for the season. IN ONE GAME! And the work he did against Crosby in the season finale, when it still meant EVERYTHING to the 'Guins, should be a blueprint for every D man in the league.

I've said it before, the gap between Myers and Bogo offensively is a puddle compared to the ocean of a gap between their defensive games. Myers was victimized in the D zone in that series. Nobody can convince me they couldn't have used Bogo's D game.

  4. It's not the trap that bothers me (well it does, but it's secondary in this case). What I'm worried about is how unwilling he was to give young players opportunities and let them play through their mistakes. No matter who gets the job, they must be on board with the development of the youth and not just sit in "win now" mode.

I'd be worried about that aspect, too. A coach who is so insecure that he can't tolerate youthful gaffes because he's too worried about the W column isn't a coach I'd prefer.

  5. Marner and Domi have played together in London. Domi is a Phoenix prospect.

Philadelphia has drafted left handed defenders in both of the last 2 drafts and I think they won't be able to resist Crouse.

Toronto is definitely taking Strome if he is there at 4.

I should add that Buffalo should keep their 2nd 1st rounder and draft LHD Jakub Zboril with it.  This kid is exactly the type of player you want in your system.

"Jakub Zboril is a smart, fleet-footed two-way defenseman that plays to his strengths in all three areas of the ice. While he doesn't aim to impress, he does all of the little things right and plays with an edge. The neutral zone is his launching pad: he is able to take off into the offensive end, or backcheck quickly into his own end. Very sound positionally. Smooth skater with lots of energy to burn. Not afraid to lay the body, or take a hit to make the play; can and will stand up for teammates. Possesses good hands and awareness on the ice, as well as a hard shot that is quite accurate. All-in-all, a complete defenseman that is relied upon to offset any oncoming attacks, as well as create chances in the opposing end. I really appreciate all your input on various prospects as I can't even fake a strong knowledge of the vast majority. But all these reports, even on the lower ranked players, make them all sound like HOFers in the making. Being familiar with how NFL scouts assemble and disseminate data in their reports, I have to wonder if these write-ups are more from a talking head perspective vs. an actual scout's opinion. I'm struck by the stark contrast in the styles.

    MEIER!!

Our Mooseheads lost in game 7 of round 2 last night in Moncton.

Not bad for a team that ditched just about every veteran and is in a rebuild .. yes a rebuild, not even 2 years after winning the Memorial Cup.

You mean the Mooseheads tried to tank and the players and coaches didn't play along? Oh the shame!

  6. To get Connor McDavid I believe the Sabres would have to deal the 2nd overall pick in 2015, the 21st overall pick in 2015, their 1st round pick in 2016 and assets.  And that is just to stay on the phone.

The minimal distance between the talents of McDavid and Eichel just doesn't justify this kind of deal. Not even close.

  7. Atlanta's "demographics" has nothing to do with the unpopularity of hockey in the region. And "marketing" to that "demographic" by selecting players of a certain race wouldn't even begin to move the needle in that regard. Very short-sighted thinking and I can't believe a newly minted marketing graduate would even conceive of the idea, let alone a VP in charge of marketing for a professional sports franchise. Let alone a GM who would think of passing up better talent simply because that talent doesn't appeal to the targeted "demographic."

    GO SABRES!!!

  8. There's so much more to developing a winning team than just drafting high-end talent and saying, "OK, have at it boys." What kind of leadership qualities do these guys possess? What kind of "hockey" character do they have? I submit Edmonton, for all its high draft picks, doesn't value that aspect as much as they should or they just did a terrible job of scouting that component in those players.

Contrast that with everything we've heard of Reinhart and Eichel. Both mature beyond their years, great leaders, great teammates, and possessing the necessary work ethic. Even if Reinhart needs another year to develop physically and has to spend it in the A, he's still gonna be worth it. Eichel is flat out gonna be one of the strongest, if not THE strongest, guys on the team the moment he walks in the building.

Unless the Oilers get serious about their back end and goalie situations, they are gonna be looking up at us for a while, regardless of how good McDavid is.

  9. Not being around Buf is what gives tremendous hope for Kane.

There's probably a reason Chicago got rid of him...

    Both good points here.

Bogo is far better defensively than Myers. Myers is better offensively, but not by as wide a margin as Bogo is better defensively. Great hockey trade as has been mentioned. Good for both teams. BUT, and it's a big but as it pertains to playoff hockey, DEFENSIVE posture is everything and with Buff struggling, I gotta think the Jets could use Bogo right now.

Kane was traded for Stafford, Armia, Lemieux, and a later first round pick. If he comes back healthy and gels with the kind of center we think Eichel will be, I just don't see how anyone can say Murray overpaid.

  10. Who says edmonton doesn't pick eichel :p

The entire population of Canada who can't tolerate the idea that a generational Canadian talent could in any way be second to a generational American player. Don Cherry would commit hari kari on national TV if that ever occurred (although, that would be an easier sight to behold than his normal attire).

  11. I need help remembering Lemieux accurately. Is Eichel's top-end speed better than his? I reckon it is. I also take it as a given that Eichel may not quite have the hands or vision of one of the 3 greatest players to put on skates.

I can't say definitively who is faster, only that both are very fast and super strong on the puck. And it's safe to say Eichel does not possess the same hands or vision.

    Yet.

  12. Good stuff.

Parker was a bit of a trip. He clearly had a cold or something. Simon was in the process of letting him go, and then Parker volunteered that it amuses him when people want to compare McDavid to Eichel because they're such different players. He then made a reference to 99 and 66 -- very different players ("but they both played centeh!").

I've now heard from multiple people (pundit types -- although maybe it all started with Parker?) that Eichel's ability to protect the puck is reminiscent of Lemieux. Not for nothing: Both players are right-handed (which, IMO, cuts against the bias that "the great ones are all lefties").

I'm just becoming more and more geeked that Eichel is our guy.

I think the Lemieux reminder is apt. From the longer stick to his longer skating stride and ability to hit top speed in two strides, he is similar in that regard. And he's fast as well.

  13. Man I would be so pissed if Grigo gets traded. We are finally at a point were we can roll three lines with little drop off and you guys want to trade our third line center. IMO we have our centers for the next decade with 1c Eichel, 2c Reinhart, and 3c being Grigo.

The thing I don't get is. We finally get to were we need to be and everybody here wants to start trading our talent away. We are not going to be a playoff team next year. So everybody needs to slow down and have some patience. This year is about development, not trading our future away for guys like Mike Green and RoR.

Just to be clear, I'm not advocating we trade anybody. I'm simply answering the question posed by the OP.

  14. Eichel makes the players around him better.  There is no better example than his linemate this year, Evan Rodrigues.  Take a look at his stats with and without Eichel.  60 points in three years without him, 61 points in the one year with him.  There were similar increases from all the top scorers on that team.  He took a horrible team with some good young talent and turned it into the highest scoring offense in the nation.  That's the Eichel-effect.  Now he just needs to do it again.  That description of BU feels awfully similar to the Sabres, a horrible team with some good young talent.  The only difference is that instead of just spending one year, he gets to bloom along with these players for a long time.  Let's hope he's able to do it again.

Perhaps the single-most important aspect of him as a hockey player. I think the ability to make those around you better is where the definition of greatness begins.

    GO SABRES!!!

  15. Eichel just seems like a winner.  McDavid will win because of his talent, like Crosby.  Eichel will win because of his skill, yes, but also his leadership abilities and desire--like Messier.

If Murray puts the right pieces around Eichel, and if Risto, Bogo, Reinhart and company keep developing, I really think the Sabres will be a contender.  It's going to take a few years and the additions of some experienced playoff vets with game left in their tanks, but it's attainable.

    Attainable and sustainable.
