  1. Other than because of the bias we carry for PLF as a favored all-time player in Buffalo, why should we be surprised that he's got a HUGE ego and an over-inflated sense of what's right AND be willing to go to the mat over it? Those attributes helped make him one of the best players in history. It's part of his makeup and he probably doesn't suffer what he considers "fools" very easily as a result.

As I said upthread, HOF players in sports rarely make successful transitions to front office positions. Patty is 0-2 in this department and his short stints in both places is more than a coincidence.

Some will feel the need to make this all about TP, the "inner circle" (ALL sports team owners have them BTW), and how dysfunctional they are in order to satisfy some preconceived narratives. But the simple truth seems to be that Patty just isn't cut out for it. While it's embarrassing in the short term perhaps, it speaks well that TP and Co. nipped the unrest in the bud. Would have been far worse to let it fester out of some misguided loyalty to a great player and person that we all love.

  2. It appears that LaFontaine and Murray had a great difference of opinion on what to do with Ryan Miller. It appears that the GM wanted to trade him and PLF wanted to re-sign him to a long term deal. What we have here is a failure to communicate.

In addition, I believe that Ted Nolan was another point of friction. PLF is a big fan of Nolan and he hired him personally to steady the ship. I think Ted Nolan has done a good job with the available resources. I believe PLF wanted to remove the interim tag from coach Nolan, but Tim Murray wants to bring in his own head coach.

I think PLF left to avoid a big sh*tstorm public battle between himself and the new GM. PLF is a classy guy. The class level of the new GM is still in doubt.

I think Ted Nolan's future is seriously in doubt now that his biggest supporter has resigned. I don't think PLF could look Ted Nolan in the eyes if he knew he was going to get canned by Murray. PLF would rather quit than see the look in Nolan's eyes when he gets canned.

This is pure speculation to be sure, but the truth is somewhere in this neighborhood I think.

What do you make of Hamilton's report that Teddy has been offered a 3 year extension. This on the heels of Murray saying they were gonna do just that the other day and that Murray thinks Nolan is the right coach for the team at this time.

  3. If there was ever a time we needed a definitive piece of sports journalism, this is it. We're all flying blind here. We seem to look to print — but maybe someone like a Jeff Russo or an Adam Benigni can sort things out.

The lack of local coverage is disappointing. That said, there may not be much being offered up at the moment. Sabres will spin of course, but where's the counterbalance through good old-fashioned gum-show journalism?

  4. Agreed.....it's impossible to truly know what's going on until the dust settles. And that assumes we'll actually know what went on here. If it was personnel issues, it just speaks to us creating a management structure that obviously didn't work. My frustration out of this thing has nothing to do with the party at fault (we don't know who it is), more that we look like one of the dumbest organizations in hockey. Dirty laundry is being aired in a very public, very embarrassing way.

Yeah, in the short term, it looks embarrassing, but if Patty ends up as the guy who hired the guy that leads us to the promised land, it won't matter at all. And if Murray craps the bed, it won't look much like anything anyway.

    GO SABRES!!!

  5. No - my ideal would be to have a management team that is able to work together without petty squabbles. Patrick is as good as gone too, especially if he believes that Pat was wronged. So now we have a GM who has been said by many to be severely lacking in the people skills department. We've spent the past 3 months or so talking about how the culture shift has been fantastic. I think that this destroys that, and our culture is in the hands of Murray.

I also hate that we just hired this guy and have something this divisive this quickly. I think it speaks to us not planning well in the least. Let's assume the issue was over Ted Nolan. This really wasn't handled in the interview process? I just think that it makes the entire organization look pathetic.

Well, we don't know if the squabble WAS petty. Nolan may very well end up leaving on his own accord, but it sure sounded like Murray was in his corner regarding working on an extension, his work with young players, etc. so I don't think Teddy was the core issue. I think it's about personnel moves and if Patty wasn't on board with them, it's anything BUT a petty squabble. Indeed, it's about the very rebuilding of the organization; a job Patty entrusted to the man he hired. Reflects very well on TM in that regard.

  6. And you gotta figure Pat understands that and that is why he decided to resign. I think he probably expected to have a little more input into the team building process and Murray essentially told him that that wouldn't be happening, which basically leaves Pat with no real job.

By hiring Murray and Patrick he essentially made himself redundant.

I'm interested to see if Patrick stays on board as a result. I really don't think this is the end of the world though. Patty, being an HOFer with a keen player's perspective, may not have the stomach for the hard, emotionally detached decisions that often have to be made in pro sports. Fortunately, TM isn't bothered by those attachments. Just what we need, imo.

    GO SABRES!!!

  7. I really don't understand this crap, why the power struggle? I was just beginning to like what was going on... But this doesn't sit well and can't be good during trade deadline deals. If I am Nolan, I hand in my resignation right now and take Girgenson's with him. This just smell like Lake Erie when I was a kid.

I'm guessing the power struggle was over the upcoming personnel moves and the release of Teddy after the season. It was imperative that TM win this struggle. We cannot afford to have a neutered GM, especially at this time.

  8. Patty came in, did what was asked of him and is going back to his less stressful nhl job.

Clearly Patty is not suited for these executive roles cuz he's jumped ship twice now.

The team has a gm that has some stones and will do what's best for the team.

Lafontaine, great guy, hockey player. Terrible nhl team exec.

    Much ado about nothing IMO.

I agree with this. Most of the great players in sports that have tried their hand at the front office side of things generally make bad execs. Seems the greater they were as players, the less success they have when trying to run operations. Competitive fire coupled with being accustomed to success through their individual efforts, isn't always a good mix for those types of jobs where consensus building is key.

    GO SABRES!!!

  9. I have no idea why people aren't happy with this trade. The last few days, consensus was talking down what we could get for Miller.

Murray said he did this in 2 stages. Miller 1st then Ott. For Miller, a UFA, you Halak, Stewart, and a conditional 1st. The Blues were 5-2 to win the Western Conference BEFORE the trade. That means there is a 40% chance they will be in the conference finals. Add the prospect of Miller resigning and it is probably better than a coinflip you get the 2014 1st rounder. Halak is an average starter and is worth a 2nd in his own right. Stewart has plenty of value. He is still young and it's pretty funny watching him get dismissed. He is 2 years younger than Stafford, and has 15 less goals than him in 120 less games...is bigger, and has a history of playing physical. That's 4 reasons he is better than Stafford in general. He's better than Steve Ott, except for consistency of leadership. I would be absolutely fine if he was a Sabre going forward, especially under Nolan.

For Ott you got a 2015 1st round pick, and a recent 2nd rounder who dropped because of injury. Both of these trades were in-line, or better than expected on a value basis, and you got first jump by setting the market. We all know the UFAs were gone. By doing this early, not only does it increase the pressure on teams like ANA, LA and Vancouver to do something and possibly overpay for guys like Ehrhoff, Myers, Moulson....but it now allows Murray free-time to actually explore and work on potential hockey trades that were not automatic. It's a lot harder pondering shipping out guys like Myers, Hodgson or Foligno when you are spending the last few days and hours trying to squeeze blood out of a rock on the guys who HAVE to be moved. Now...maybe you spend 3 days going back and forth with Anaheim in a controlled process. You weren't going to get Gibson for Miller...but how about Myers being involved?

I love the fact that we set the market for once, did it out west where we can feel more comfortable making further trades, and got fair value at the very least.

    Very good take.

  10. I watched and am glad I did. My beef is the usual you can't hear what the question was on half of them. If you're a fan you should watch that video. Miller is at ease. His guard is down. He is still thinking but this is a really cool q and a with him. What he says about the city the people and what it means to play in a place where the people are fans and the players are noticed and not invisible. Not every player gets that.

It's the second last one you'll see from him my friend. I encourage you have the patience to watch it. You will be pleased with the reflection of Ryan Miller. I'm very glad that I invested the nine minutes and change which is NOTHING compared to how much I have invested over the years. And I for one am GLAD he will play his final game tomorrow. I will be there one last time to witness him and hopefully rise out of my seat screaming MILLERRRRR!!!! I thought the last game last year was the swan song but I'm positive this is. Watch the video.

Thanks for the memories Ryan, I guess my jersey with your name and number will get creatively framed now. Go win a cup dude.

Thanks for taking the time to capture what I'm sure many of us feel as fans of Ryan MIller.

I know it's probably asking too much in today's jaded world, but it would be nice to hear chants of "Thank-you Miller" like back in '75 with the "Thank-you Sabres" chants in the Aud.

  11. Two words: hockey clinic.

Tip of the hat to Price, but even Miller and shorty Enroth could have pitched back to back SOs with that squad in front of him.

Just an awesome display of hockey by the Canadian team. Well done, Canada. Congratulations.

    Teemu Selanne was named MVP

At 43 years of age. Amazing how he can still bring it.

  12. That interview was BS. I felt so bad for him. I wanted to punch the reporter

In fairness to the reporter, she asked two skiing related questions to start off and during the answer of the second one, Bode Miller brought up his brother's passing. Could she have chosen not to follow-up on that angle? Yeah, probably. But it was Miller's choice to go there to begin with.

It's also worth noting that MIller and the reporter are long time friends who have known each other through the pro racing circuit for years. I think that offered a certain intimacy and comfort level.

  13. Read this from www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/GARTHS-CORNER/Halak-Bottom/6/58038 near the bottom is this description of Girgs.

"Buffalo Sabres 19 year-old rookie Zemgus Girgensons, who scored his first Olympic goal against King Hank Lundqvist in Saturday’s loss to Sweden, is capable of throwing his team on his back and fighting like a “Braveheart”. Zemgus will give the Swiss cold sweats because he never stops competing inside a shift. He fore checks like a hostile, hungry rottweiler chasing a mail man off his front porch."

    SCHWING!

Gotta love this kid and how he plays the game.

  14. I think my main problem is every 4 years some network exec decides that Olympic prime time coverage needs to cater to a female demographic and hence the network decides to show hour after hour of figure skating coverage. All sorts of awesome sports that could get some coverage but we get skating night after night for almost two full weeks. Brutal.

It isn't the network exec that decides it. It's the advertisers that decide it for him. Like it or not skating, like gymnastics, generates the highest ratings via the large female audience those events generate.
