Interesting theory, although it seems it would have clearly involved tampering of some sort. I would imagine prospect-loaded Utah would have rather given up the picks, so I guess in your scenario Adams would have used the threat to match as leverage in order to get what he wanted, which reports seem to indicate was very clearly Kesselring?

The deal is based on an offer sheet. Offer sheets usually max out at five years. You can't spread the money out more than 5 years on an offer sheet. Armstrong probably let Adams and Peterka's agent know he was going to offer sheet Peterka. He let Adams know the number and Adams didn't want to pay , and didnt want the the draft pick compensation, so they figured out a trade. After the trade, Utah still had to sign Peterka, so Peterka's agent probably held them to the offer sheet numbers. Peterka could have refused to sign a longer term contract, and would have still been open to offer sheets from other teams.

Chad D: expect a Byram trade at or around the draft

I meant ticking on the prediction of a trade pre-draft. We might very well keep him. But it's also ticking on trading #9. -
I guess the best thing about O'Brien is that he addresses the organizational need for playmaking centre even though he superficially might look like a "more of the same" pick.

I view this as part of a double trade with Byrum. Perhaps they felt by acquiring the RHD for Peterka, they could get something more valuable for Byrum which means the overall value of the combined haul they get would be better. I don't think we can look at this trade in a vacuum. -

One of the Insiders (Dreger?) gave some insight on how the issue with Byram is not really a long-term offer sheet, its about his willingness to walk himself to free agency. Sounds like he may be perfectly happy to sign a one or 2 year deal with Sabres or elsewhere. What Bo wants most is apparently not money or location, its role and fit, and his willingness to sign a long-term contract is tied to that. That matters to the Sabres as they consider his future, but it also matters to the team that acquires him and may affect trade offers. Personally, I'd set the trade bar at the equivalent of the 1st, 2nd 3rd offer sheet level. If someone offers that, or offer sheets him, I take it. If they don't, I give him a 1- or 2-year deal to play on the 1st pair with Ras and see how things play out. -
I think tampa moves Bjorkstrad, McDonaugh, and sheary if they're looking to move people. 6.5M for 90 points is a bargain.
-
I think they take a centre: O’Brien, Martin, McQueen whichever one is there. Jay McKee coaches O’Brien and Leenders was his goalie so Buffalo will have a lot of viewings/intel on O’Brien
-
I agree that I think they take Smith if he's there at #9, with his Penn State connection. I'm not as sure he'll get to 9 though, as I read an article yesterday saying "teams that passed on him will look silly when he wins the Norris is 5 years." We suddenly have decent organizational depth at RHD now. Other guys I's like at 9 are Bartone and Martin.

Wonder if the Dobson trade is affecting Byram talks? Gotta be an overlap in interested teams.

A lot of comments about wanting more for the trade... Yeah, any trade you make you always want more. How often does a trade get made and if something else would have been thrown in we wouldn't have liked it? But I think part of that comes down to Peterka having a bigger name, and having a better stat sheet. I'm not saying that he's not the better player of the trade... But sometimes when someone has a bigger name or a more impressive stat sheet, they're not always the better player. Anyway, I'm trying to look at this positively but do I like to trade? Overall, Yeah. Why? Because it's likely a couple new players were going to have on the team we didn't have last year. Short of winning... Or scoring a ton of goals... having new faces on the team and seeing how they integrate into the team gives me something to look forward to watching. -

KA is celebrating this landslide victory for his trade! He's touting this as proof of his superior leadership and hockey acumen! LOL -
I think one thing to think about if they use 9, is that mrtka isn't as important to Buffalo with Kesselring in the fold. Jackson Smith has really slid in consensus rankings so he's gonna be available.

Not enough has been made about Peterka being a UFA at 28. They're looking at the AAV and ignoring the term. 2nd contract players who get paid 1st-line money get that money for giving up UFA years on the principle that UFA years are worth more. For example, JJ's new teammate Clayton Keller gave away 4 UFA years in order to sign a $7.1M AAV deal. Nick Suzuki gave away 4 to sign a $7.8M deal. Lucas Raymond, same deal for $8M. JJ gave up just 1 and still got $7.7.

would've liked more for that trade. like that we got kesselring. its the offseason though and i want to see what other moves happen. -
Frondell at least to me, isn't dynamic. Yes the shot is, but his skating, passing, handling, defense are all just fine. He just seems like one of these guys who's a good puck protector with a great shot who's gonna give you 30g, 30a at his peak and I need more at 2nd overall.
-
Agreed. Although, I know why they are doing it...keeping a 50/50 split in revenue with players and agreeing the aggressively escalate the salary cap over 4 years...the owners wanted something in return to recoup some margin....two games helps with that from game revenue and additional streaming/tv revenue. Watering down an already watered down league. Modern day sports.

Assuming the Sabres stay where they are, there are two names I want to hear get called before then: O'Brien and McQueen. That will mean Martone, Hagens, or Martin have fallen (I don't think there is any chance Frondell or Desnoyers fall to #9).
-
I admire your conviction on Frondell. I have not seen the kid play, so my opinions are based solely on the opinions of others (including yours). There seems to be a real possibility that he goes #2 to SJ. You have him ranked quite a bit lower than anyone I have seen, but you're not alone in thinking he is not a top 5 pick. This is why I love the draft. I would look forward to tonight, even if the Sabres had no 1st rounder. I find it fascinating to watch how individual teams sort out the details on these kids.
-
To the bolded, I will need to see what happens with Byram and how close the Sabres come to the cap before I can draw the conclusion that you have. I think it is possible that a factor in Peterka wanting out is that we were offering a two year bridge at $6.5. That he immediately signed with Utah might be a sign that the Sabres did not offer what Peterka wanted in a contract, and Utah did.
