Yes, and like other young teams that may scuffle throughout his ELC and first 5 years of his big extension (Colorado w/ MacKinnon, Florida w/ Barkov)... SJ isn't going to trade him for futures. They'll build around him until they get it right. -
I'm all for that but who is going to trade for a broken player? San Jose already did all their cap dump moves to get to the floor. You going to eat salary? I think we are stuck with him. This will be worse than Connolly.
-
Byram's an offense first guy. Power's an offense guy. Dahlin's an offense guy. He's good enough to be okay at D but he should be considered offense first. Kesselring I'm not sure and I'm not sure he's sure either. It's too many offense first guys. Not enough defenders. They are just fortunate Samuelsson has gotten back to what we hoped he'd be and Timmons has been solid. If they weren't, this team might be winless.
-
Which is why I wrote "as currently constructed." The only way we get "elite" goaltending the rest of the way is either Ellis or Levi take over the starting job and thrive. UPL is a 4+ Gaa guy each night; Lyon a 3+ a night. Unfortunately, we know that Adams isn't going to give the net over to the kids.
-
Well sure. I've wanted Adams fired for a while. I was very disappointed he wasn't fired last year. Most of us were. So yes, fire Adams. Absolutely. I'm just saying if it's a cosmetic change nothing will really change and we will just be fooled into optimism for another 2 or 3 years. Terry has to change his view and involvement or this will never really change. That's the core of the argument.
-
There is one way, and unfortunately, it's the way Adams has shortchanged at every opportunity in his tenure until this season (and this season they're running with Luukkonen who is not this guy) and even this season it's hardly likely because while Adams went with quantity, he didn't go and get the best quality. They would need elite goaltending. Not "UPL is hot for 20 games" goaltending. Elite goaltending. Hasek goaltending. And they would need it for 55 of the remaining 67 games. It would need to sub-2.00 GAA, .925+ sv% and at least 9 shutouts.
-
It wouldn't be the first (or last) time a former starting goalie has been sent down. So it's still simple to me and it's correct by the other goalies and how you treat them. You call every GM and see if they are interested. If there's any sort of trade available you make it. If there isn't, you send him down and if another GM claims him you file that GM name under snake in your contact list and you move on. Levi still gets most of the starts down there because he is your top prospect and you tell him that. You tell him you see the future as him and Ellis. That's it, it's over. One thing I no longer care about is how good players do away from Buffalo. It'll happen and it'll happen a lot. WGAF. The only thing that matters here is Sabres wins and losses and that should be the mantra. If you aren't winning it's just not good enough and you need to make changes.

okay but they shouldn't "lose the urgency" that's sort of the issue isn't it. -

Kulich has a blood clot issue, never heard of this as a sports injury. Zucker with a viral infection or something. Benson with puck to face, now foot injury. Ellis back twinge. Glass-man Norris gets hurt taking a faceoff. Dahlin's fiancée. UPL/Danforth/Kesselring/Power/Greenway/Kozak. How are we going to end the drought? -

Ahem... Hockey gods. It's this kinda talk that put us where we are now. The only way we beat this is to go all in at the trade deadline and have Inky smoke his stuff. All his stuff. - Today

The biggest fault that can be attributed to Pegula isn't providing enough financial support for the franchise as it is hiring bad staff. If you hire a bad GM who hands out bad contracts, that is a money loser from an investment on the dollar calculation. If you hire a coach when there were better options for the position, regardless how much you pay for your selection, you are not only not getting a return on your investment in salary, but you are also not getting the results on the ice resulting in less fan support causing additional revenue loss. The bottom line is that management ineptitude costs you more money. It's stupid and a consistent theme during Pegula's tenure. When one is stubborn you don't learn from your mistakes. -
What is the nicest way to put this? The Sabres are toast as long as Adams remains as Pegula's yes man. As long as Terry has a say in the Sabres roster the team will never be good. Pegula already has his built in excuse for this season - injuries. Adams isn't going anywhere unless the team is one of the 3-4 worst teams in the NHL this season and maybe not even then. We have become the Florida Marlins of hockey, but without the two championships. So what about the OP question. There really isn't a question here, as this team cannot make the playoffs as currently constructed.

At least we still have Tage. That is until he finds the wet mat just like our boy Kevin Kolb -
He won the MVP with basically the same set of receivers last year. That was pretty good with an average group. I hear you on the play calling but the K-Gun and Kelly calling plays is really an artifact of a bygone era.
-
Yes, I don't think they can wait much longer on the Byram decision. Ideally you trade him with a year and a half left on his deal to maximize the return. I wonder if one of the Western Canadian teams would view him as a potential piece. He's still got a solid pedigree but the longer we play him without Dahlin, the more that negative light will shine.

Like the saying goes “you got to spend money to make money.” He doesn’t want to spend his money on the Sabres so he is just using it as a tax write-off. One way or another it’s helping him financially either way. -
Clearly Adams is overvaluing Byram. Quite honestly, he's not a very good player and you might be able to squeeze more value out of him due to his draft status and perceived value. If you can get a 2nd line winger for him, you do it all day. We have guys that can fill that third pair role (Ryan Johnson comes to mind). We need to balance the books a bit as we're investing a ton on our defense and will need room for Kesselring's next contract.
-
Fair, sorry didn't mean to jump on you. I just think we need to be careful with Power and trading him away too quickly. Like you said, it has to be for a similarly talented player, at a similar point in their career. We absolutely need to balance this roster somehow but I'd prefer to not use Power to do it. I'd much rather see Byram or Tuch (pre-12 million dollar mistake) move out first.
