  1. Past hour
  2. If UPL regains his 2024 form, it's a good problem to have. Lyon has been great so far and Ellis looked very good in his single appearance. While managing 3 is not great, I'd rather the team be managing 3 good players than having to debate the likes of Carter Hutton, Houser, etc. (no disrespect to Houser intended, who was a good story). Not sure if I want to throw Comrie onto that list, as he's a good fit for Winnipeg as a backup, but he was pretty bad in Buffalo.
  3. The thread is not premature. I wrote it. I used words like "so far," "small sample size," "if...turns out to be," "don't want to be unrealistic," etc. The idea was to take the temperature of the board on the comparison as it sits right now. As a fan that's watched a few games so far, the thought has crossed my mind how Doan's impact & value compares to Peterka's, and based on the responses, it appears to have crossed others' minds too. While Doan is more than a "throw in," it's not really debatable that Kesselring was the main piece coming back to the Sabres in the trade. If Doan brings more to the team than Peterka brought, exclusive of what Kesselring eventually brings (or doesn't bring, as may be the case), it would be pretty remarkable. And, based on what we've seen SO FAR, it's entirely possible.
  4. This is vague but I am intrigued, are you thinking they are playing UPL one of the games to show an acquiring team he is good to go? And how would you know they arent parting with Lyon or Ellis soon? I mean that is the smart thing to do,
  5. KA is up to something, because i know they are not parting ways with Lyon or Ellis anytime soon.
  6. Just crazy! Why 3 goalies again?! This team cant stop shooting itslef in the foot
  7. When the Athletic rates prospects, one of the factors they name and consider is "Compete" which I would equate to "Motor." Doan has it in spades and the Sabres have lacked players with it for years. Benson has it too. While talent cannot be overlooked, the Sabres have had plenty of talent over the years, but severely lacked in compete. The best players in the NHL are those that have both. Guys like McKinnon, the Tkachuk brothers, etc. I hate Marchand, but he has both too. McDavid is top of the talent scale and seems to have the "Motor"/"Compete" as well.
  8. This is what I don’t understand. It sounds like he is not waiver exempt. STL tried to send him to the AHL and we claimed him. So, wouldn’t he have to go through waivers again if STL tried to send him to the AHL?
  9. From what I've seen/read, he's expected back sometime in November, probably later in the month. I can't say how accurate that is, but that's what I've seen out there.
  10. And I was going to say this will determine whether KA has a job next year, but who are we kidding.
  11. kevyn gonna go down with that contract he gave to upl.
  12. Thanks. I don't think those studies are directed to the question that I have, though. My question has the modern trend of year-round, over-use, and specialization in youth sports had an effect on the health of pro athletes during their careers? Are pro athletes healthier now than they were, say, 30 years ago? It's tricky. Because there's a lot to control for. The year-round specialization is presumably bad, but there are lots of other things happening around that behaviour that is probably good for an athlete's health (overall fitness and strength training, nutrition, as examples). It calls to mind a study that a friend of mine worked on: The consumption of fish that have high mercury levels in them. Mercury - very bad for your health! Fish - very good for your health! How's that shake out?
  13. The Sabres believe UPL is their #1 goaltender and are behaving accordingly.
  14. Crazy. Why not leave him down there for the next week and give Ellis another game? I wanted to see Lyon on Friday, and Ellis on Saturday. Leave UPL down and get him really ready. Unless they have a trade partner lined up and they want to see UPL in NHL action? WTF?
  15. My bet, they plan to run Lyon and then UPL against Toronto.
  16. Out of something like 56 qualifying goalies last season, upl was 54th in goals saved above expected. It wasn't just the defense.
  17. Really hoped they would have kept him in Rochester for at least one more game
  18. Sabres recall UPL from the Amerks
  19. there actually are studies that show just that actually... A review found that youth who specialize most (i.e., focus on one sport, train > 8 months/year or quit other sports) were 81% more likely to experience an overuse injury than those who played many sports. https://www.gmanetwork.com/news/lifestyle/healthandwellness/665293/sport-specialization-tied-to-increased-risk-of-injury-in-kids-and-teens/story/ One large prospective study found that sport specialization was associated with increased risk of injury in girls (hazard ratio ≈ 1.31) and that total hours/week of vigorous activity was a strong predictor of injury in both sexes. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31555716/ In a case-control study of ~1,190 athletes aged 7-18, specialized single-sport athletes in individual sports had higher rates of overuse injury (44.3% vs 32.2%) and “serious overuse injuries” (23.4% vs 11.6%) compared to non-specialized athletes. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/28351225/ In a review of youth sport specialization, risk factors such as playing >1 organized team, competing year-round, participating more hours/week than one’s age in years, and high degree of specialization were consistently found to increase risk of overuse injuries and lower-extremity pain. https://meridian.allenpress.com/jat/article/54/10/1040/420868/Health-Consequences-of-Youth-Sport-Specialization Some organizations note that kids who play the same sport year-round — especially without a break/alternate sport season — face more repetitive motions and stress on bones, tendons, growth plates, etc. https://www.hopkinsmedicine.org/health/conditions-and-diseases/sports-injuries/youth-sport-specialization
  20. I am certain he would. As I posted in the other thread his record is 155 games 71 / 65/ 15. His save percentage is low at .898 but he was playing behind young crappy buffalo defenders including forwards and blue liners.
  21. Today
  22. What if we get to .500 so dudacek can post again?
  23. Huge Injury news for the Leafs: Tanev to IR and will miss both games against us Reiley also missed practice today and is doubtful for the weekend as well Gotta take advantage of the Leafs here, there is a real chance we can come out of the weekend with 4 points
  24. Could you imagine UPL & Levi battling for the starting job in Rochester? 😂😂
  25. Is he over Lyon at the moment? Probably not but I think that could change. I think the situation last year was partly a case of burn out. When the third pair is Clifton and Bryson, a second pair getting not enough D out of Sammy and Power it's tough. Add in that some of the forwards were not as responsible as a few we added I think we might be in a better situation. So while UPL might not be the whole solution I still think he is part of it compared to the alternatives. Only his play will determine where he is. UPL's record is 155 games 71/65/15 .898 behind a lot of crappy Buffalo D. Lyon is 119 games 53/42/11 .904. Some of that was on Florida and Carolina two of the most defensive teams in the east. Maybe at age 32 it's all coming together but that is very few games for a player of his age. Best case they both hit .910 or above and share the workload. If you go with Ellis, Lyon is playing 70% of the games and my guess is that will not go well. We just have recency bias with UPL. A 26 year old goalie with a winning record in the NHL is not going to get waived unless he is hurt beyond repair. So I have talked myself into saying yes he can lead us to the playoffs if everything around him is better.
