I can't decide if he is more like Samson Reinhardt or Mitch Marner. Neither are very physical, but Samson is clutch, is the definition of grace under pressure while Marner seemed to disappear in playoffs. JJP is sure not like Benson, Braydon Point or Kucherov.

After watching the playoffs I wonder if him or Quinn would be the type of players you want in a playoff round. I dunno, maybe he is like Samson. Or maybe they just get run over by physical teams. Both are good skating, open ice, score from some distance away from net players, imo.

I think JJP compares to Nik Ehlers.

I don’t know if there is another level to his game, maybe, but defensive ability has room to grow for sure.

I didn’t watch all of Winnipeg’s games but Ehlers game seemed to translate OK.

Ya, I watch almost no western conference games so I can't relate.

Everyone is questioning JJP's defensive game, but what about his forechecking? That's just as important in tipping the ice in our direction and I don't consider him a real grinder at all. Samson does well enough in that, maybe JJP gets better?

I don't see much difference between John's proposed line and the Vanek, Roy, Max line from 2005/6.

Entering that season: Vanek (age 21) 0 NHL games , Roy (age 22) 49 games w 19 pts, and Max (age 26) 332gms w 152 pts.

Entering next season: Quinn (age 24) 178 gms w 97 pts, Kulich (age 21) 63 gms w 24 pts & JJP (age 23) 238 gms w 150 pts

I do.  It's not 2006 anymore. The league had new rules and Buffalo was able to exploit them. It's 20yrs later under the cap system, everyone adjusted.

This one thing worked this one time, so 20yrs later we should do it again. If it was going to work it would have last year. The leagues changed, development has changed. We gotta let 2005 go.

Will my proposed line of Quinn/Kulich/JJP work next season? We won't know for sure until tried. However, what I'm not going to do is dismiss the possibility based on the prior season's play. Most people will agree that all three players need to get stronger and tougher. Will they physically mature and toughen up their style of play? That's yet to be determined. What I'm not going to do is have a predetermined view on the possibility. Assuming that none of the three listed players are dealt, and that is not a safe assumption because Quinn and JJP could be dangled on the market, I can see the possibility of this young line. I'm not saying you are wrong. or your stance is invalid because it is certainly reasonable. We shall see. TBD.

I don't think he's comparable to either of those two and he's not at that level. He's a goal scorer but he is primarily a perimeter player but also in fairness that is who the Sabres are. That is how they play. It's not a good way, but it is their way.

Peterka imo is a 20 goal guy but he's weak defensively and often too soft (although I think that could be coached out of him if done right). He should be paid accordingly but not more.
