They have 6 healthy D at this point. If they put him on the road right now, it is a callup and somebody has to (on paper at least) get sent down. If HE wants to drive to Buffalo on his own, there's nothing stopping it. But even if he's there, is he going to be going through his normal pregame rituals? Will he have adequate time to stretch & get dressed before playing with no warmup? But if they tell him to come to Buffalo to be activated, they're paying him his NHL salary for the day, putting him up in a hotel, and they are either IRing Clague or sending somebody else down if they still have 6 other healthy D. Just because I like finding loopholes, and we know other teams exploit them, here's what I'd do as an asst GM, with the Amerks dormant until Friday: "Hey, Larry, how'd you like to grab dinner and see the game tonight? Oh, and bring your bag. We'd like to look at your equipment and make sure you have the right gear." If he has to play without a proper warmup, it's still better than having only 5 D. Or maybe he warms up in the dressing room for the first half of the first period. "Oh, I have plans." "Larry, I REALLY think you should come to see the game tonight."
