  1. Ironically, perhaps, I believe peanut concession sales is how Delaware North got its start. Btw, "concessions" is such a funny word in this context.
  2. Hmm. Oh. My geography is terrible and I'm not going to prop myself up with Google. Has Arizona State managed to establish a real NCAA program out there? Or does ASU have nothing to do with the area we're talking about.
  3. The only team that I will actually cheer for to win the Cup is the Sabres. In terms of having a mild rooting interest, I'm pretty agnostic as to all the remaining teams. For whatever reason, I can't summon the feeling of a grudge against Carolina or Dallas. Maybe that would be different if I were watching one of these games, though. Same goes for Eichel. As I type this out, I'm feeling like "I wish the young man well!" Again, I wonder how it would feel if I were watching the game. But I want to actually feel that way. Go on, Jack. The Sabres were never in this tournament. Light it up, fella. All that said, I'm slightly partial to the Panthers. That's a good team and generally an enjoyable one to watch. I like that they apparently had a massive Presidents Trophy hangover, barely squeaked into the playoffs (edging out our team!), and now they're en fuego.
  4. I had a Morgulis t-shirt with that motto on it. I wore it until it fell apart.
  5. I don't think it's a mentality, nor is it something to be taken seriously. It's just a radio person looking to drive engagement. But not with you, it appears.
  6. Rome (Italy (not New York): The Eternal City. Tacoma, Washington: The City of Destiny.
  7. I'd thought that the Beastie Boys redeemed "Frisco" when they dropped it in "Get on the Mic": Got busy in Frisco / Fooled around in Fresno / Got over on your girlie / Cuz you know she never says "no". This is a fun one. Buffalo also lays claim to being the City of Light. There's a terrific book by that name - written by a Buffalo gal and set in Buffalo. The name traces to the Pan Am Exposition, I believe - when the city was lit up with this new fangled thing called electricity. Evidence of this name being a thing is found in the City's crest/flag.
  8. Now that's funny.
  9. Similarly how? Making a spectacle out of things is what brands do. It tends to increase their value, as the thinking goes. Expectant parents can't (or at least shouldn't) claim the same motivation. If there were no reason to make a parade out of such events, we would extend the same criticism to the amateur draft. Why televise it at all? Just tell us who got drafted.
  10. There's a significant segment of NFL fans who, to varying degrees, plan their lives around their favourite team's schedule. Friends of mine were grateful to learn when the Bills' London game is. They're already booked to London around that weekend. There's another segment of NFL fans who are either STH's or regular attendees of home games. It makes a difference to those folks to know when the games will be - precisely. Then there are the casual types who want to obsess over how the season is apt to break down based on which teams play when. The sequencing of games is relevant to reading the tea leaves. All of this is to say nothing of the gamblers - a huge business consideration - who can get gambling lines on games that are now fixed in date and time.
  11. I agree. And that's notwithstanding the fact that there are hundreds (?) in the fighters cohort that are still alive. The fact that a number of them have already died and died at that very young average age is, as you say, startling. I believe the study's authors cite to their conclusions and recommend removal of fighting from the game. E.g., by making fighting a game misconduct with supplemental discipline, etc.
  12. Worse looking? Really? I dunno. The optics of that slash are what make it outrageous -- just late, late, late and with a full overhead hard swing. What you say may be true about each game involving equally or more dangerous plays. Like I said - some of my judgment here is based on who McDavid is. And I think the comparison above fails a bit because Miller was the goalie. Also, looking back at the Lucic-Miller incident, I see that Vanek attempted to do what McDavid did - by hitting Lucic. But Vanek literally bounced off him and landed on the ice. Comical, really. I'm not giving McDavid an "A" (or maybe even a "B") for what he did. Maybe he gets a B/B-, with the grade bumped up by what Nurse did at the end of the game.
  13. Ha - I just watched that segment - was he literally calling his teammates over as he engaged AP? Or was he chirping at someone else on the Knights?
  14. Holy crap - that slash was outrageous. I thought McDavid's response in the moment was sufficient, especially given who McDavid is.
  15. At worst, I'll take a "meh, we'll see" view of the Jones hiring. My honest reaction is more in the realm of "lol." The world of tee-vee broadcasting is not, imo, a place to set yourself up for success in a FO position. But he comes across as an honest, likable guy. So maybe he'll get the ship righted there. As for Briere: Wasn't he previously announced as GM? Is this new news?
  16. It's obvious. I'm actually pretty ambivalent on whether fighting should still be tolerated. But when a guy gets into an honest fight -- nothing staged about it, something that happens in the moment -- his teammates get the message loud and clear: I care about you guys. Watch this. This is how much I care about you. Blocked shots seem to have a similar effect.
  17. This is helpful context. Even so ... it seems odd that they'd have that many ostensibly healthy men dying at such ages. The lead researcher is quoted as saying that he was startled by those average ages of death, for those who did die. Then again, I suspect the lead researcher is looking to generate as much attention for his study as he can.
  18. Ha. Except that this proposition: Is as old as the hills.
  19. My guy. Some corporations are public. Some are private. The Bills - which I believe are organized as Buffalo Bills LLC - are indeed a corporate entity. A private one. A wholly held subsidiary of PSE, I believe. Which is also a private corporation. All agents owe their principal fiduciary duties.
  20. The eye-grabbing headline is that NHL enforcers die, on average, 10 years earlier than their fellow NHL players. The thing that really stood out to me was that the "control group" for this study -- NHL players who weren't "enforcers" -- had an average age of death of ~ 57 years old. (Compared with enforcers whose average age at death was 47.) There are limitations and caveats with this research, to be sure. Several of them are noted in the paper itself. (I also note that they looked at player data going back to 1967, so, for many of the relevant periods of time, life expectancy wasn't what it is now.) All that aside: Holy hot damn those are young average ages of death.
  21. That's a deft combination of refined taste and big goals.
  22. The world as it should be based on principles. The world as it is based on facts. A priori. A posteriori. An age-old debate. Whither PAngloss?
  23. I'd thought that my not going on a tour was more a function of my limited availability, but, yeah -- I'm sure they'll part a sea of marshmallow fluff in order to get your tour scheduled.
  24. Nice. I was on campus to catch a soccer game at Saint Francis in nearby Loretto last fall and the Altoona-Johnstown Diocese was holding a meeting of (and a mass for) high school aged kids (confirmandi?) in the basketball arena. It was an impressive showing. I like the vibe in that part of the 814. I have visited the gift store a couple times. I have not yet been able to coordinate a tour.
