  1. On Wednesday, a bucket of cold water was tossed on the whole thing. Make that buckets of cold water.

First, from NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly:

“We are in no different position today with respect to expansion than we were the last time we answered the same questions,” he wrote in an email to National Post on Wednesday. “There has been interest expressed, we have and will listen to the interest, but we haven’t defined a process and certainly no decisions have been made.”

Then, from outgoing MLSE CEO and president Tim Leiweke (per Toronto’s Fan 590):

“The commissioner and I had other business this morning, so we talked for a while and this came up. I asked him, ‘did I miss a meeting?’ And he laughed and said, ‘no.’

“What I can tell you, 100 percent, as of this morning, for sure? This isn’t on the agenda right now.”

  2. Bills apparently signed Jordan Palmer... Hope this isn't their attempted solution at one of the worst QB situations in recent memory.

Maybe it's nothing more than Palmer having a better camp in Chicago than Lewis had in Buffalo.

  3. Spoiler within, highlight to read: Floyd Smith for Buffalo, SHK III dropping the puck, and Jean Beliveau for the Habs. The one on the right holding the paper sorta looks like Rick Azar, the old sports anchor for one of the TV stations (don't recall which one). As for the others, I got nothing...

  4. IMO Cleveland has suffered more. At least the Bills have made 4 SB appearances, and the Sabres 2 SC finals appearances. Cleveland with the Indians, Cavs, and Browns...Zero SB appearances, 2 WS appearances, and 1 NBA Finals appearance.

    Agree.

And since the Browns won four NFL titles before the Super Bowl era, we'll conveniently leave the Bills' two AFL titles of the list!

  5. There's no question that Pettine fielded a fun D that created gaudy numbers. But the Rex disciple didn't have all the answers. That was a boom or bust unit that got exposed by stout run games. Belichick figured that out PDQ - they ran it like 35 times in each of the two games last year and were right around a 4.5 YPC clip.

I get the concern with another guy coming in and talking about how the front 4 is going to have to create the pressure, especially given how that went with Wannstedt (sic? (don't care)). But from what I heard about Wanny (and I'm honestly not sure where - it's in the nature of message board/AM radio nonsense), he was a guy who did not put in the hard work to understand how the game had changed and was changing - he was content to rely on schemes and systems that had brought him success in the past.

The Giants succeed with a pressure from the front 4 scheme. I'm hoping Schwartz can do the same, if that's what he's planning to do.

Pretty sure that's a sentiment all Bills fans can agree on but I fear losing Pettine will prove to be a bigger loss than Byrd or Kiko. Really hope I'm proven wrong!

  6. I'm worried about the Bills D. Schwartz is not Pettine. I think Pettine really schemed his way to a good D. It was exotic blitz after exotic blitz. I fully expect them to take a big step back. This was Jim Schwartz's D before becoming a head coach. Do you think our Players resemble that loaded roster?

    LDE Jevon Kearse

    LDT Tony Brown

    RDT Albert Haynesworth

    RDE Kyle Vanden Bosch

    LLB David Thornton

    MLB Stephen Tulloch

    RLB Keith Bulluck

    LCB Nick Harper

    RCB Cortland Finnegan

    SS Chris Hope

    FS Michael Griffin

I think you're thinking too hard about it and are putting too much work into making your case.

Just remember what the defense looked like in '12 when we had a certain mustachioed D coordinator who was also blitz-adverse.

As hard as I try to be optimistic, it is an area of concern me.

  7. That is an interesting look at the Sabres contract situation to be sure. Moulson and Gionta are the most interesting aspects of this, with the date on Gionta's NMC shifting over to a limited NTC, I have to wonder if Murray wouldn't be looking to move them after the 2/3 season mark as well. Time limit on instilling character and leadership qualities on the kids?

The bolded part got me thinking that, as as a whole, this group seems like a more mature group than the previous core that moved up from Rochester.
