What is better for Levi’s development? Playing twice a week in Rochester or watching Lyon play in Buffalo? Ellis was injury insurance for UPL so Levi doesn’t have to be recalled to sit and watch Lyon as an NHL backup (during his last year as a waiver exempt player).

So if Buffalo waives Ellis within 30 days, he reverts back to the Blues and can be sent outright to the AHL. If after 30 days, it is NHL waivers for all teams.

Except you have to read the tweet which said “prior to returning to Rochester.” And Ellis wasn’t here then so this is all for naught.

Somewhat different situations? I think comparing first line NHL players to a goalie who has shown he doesn’t belong in the NHL yet is not a meaningful exercise. Unless you’re trying to make a point regarding organizational mismanagement of players? Even then, Levi is still a prospect compared to who you’ve mentioned. And, the Sabres are trying to fix their previous fast-tracking of Levi to the NHL by stapling him in Rochester as long as they possibly can. So I guess I’m missing it…

The plan was to have UPL & Levi battle for the Buffalo crease in 26-27 and Lyon would be injury insurance and waived after camp. By then, the career backup would be almost 34 and the contract offset for AHL money would keep him cheap if Lyon didn’t get claimed. And if he did, so what… I still think that’s the plan. Ellis only figures into the plan if one of UPL or Lyon gets hurt this season and he plays great. Sucks for him, but he is injury insurance only. I think the Sabres are doing him a solid by waiting 30 days to waive him (maybe selfishly to make sure UPL doesn’t get re-injured) to give him a chance to get claimed and stay in the NHL elsewhere.

This is the type of game that the Sabres have had mixed results with. A road game they should win. No excuse for this team or the coaching staff tonight. The entire blue line is healthy. Lindy can choose any goalie he wants. Tage, Tuch, McLeod, & Doan are all a point a game over their last 6+games. The team has picked up a point or more in six out of seven. We joke about the must win thing, but this is a must win to stay with the pack. You lose to last place Boston and it’s gonna get noisy and negative again. A must win in October. Let’s goooo! ⚔️

It’s more likely that maybe not is the timeline. Matt Milano tore his bicep in mid-August last year and wasn’t back until January.

Not a direct answer to the OP’s question, but a UPL contract buyout would cost $1.58MM for six seasons. Not ideal, but also not that bad. It would be less than 1% of each year’s cap to move on from the mistake of the contract. If no improvement this year and a trade is not possible, this is my angle.

Interestingly, everyone else in the division won their most recent game except Buffalo. Getting a point tonight was huge, but it was RIGHT THERE for them. Survived UPL to steal a point. Time for him to watch for a while since we don’t have a back to back for two weeks.

Something is wrong with Ellis. And goalies don’t play on back to backs any longer. The whole thing sucks and UPL sucks more.
