He met with them yesterday, an offer (more likely offers) were made, he gets a night to sleep on it and will make a decision today. Not unusual for someone considering a new job.

Not sure how any defenceman watching last night would not have seen a world of opportunity hockey-wise. Maybe life-wise there are other considerations to weigh.

Good news if true - where was this reported?

I'd be shocked if he didn't sign here...immediate spot open on a young and highly talented team that will be likely making a cup run in a few years...almost a no-brainer and perfect situation to become a part of.

Correct plus he said he was very impressed with the Sabres organization and gave no indicaction he wasn’t signing here.

plus, if KA knew he wasn’t signing he would have traded him for a 2nd (the same comp he gets if he doesn’t sign)

I was picking 14th in one of those mock draft simulators last night. Grabbed Reinbacher who was ranked 20th in their system. Seems overly optimistic a result, but perhaps not outside the possible.

Even though he’d be 3 years away from playing with the Sabres this would be excellent

In a perfect world, I want Johnson to make Jokiharju expendable in addition to the team bringing in another solid defender in the off-season to bump the 5 and 6 down a peg.

You’re 100% right here. For a defensive dman, Joker is way to unreliable is his own zone. For whatever reason, Bryson and him have regressed this season (Bryson much more so than Joker though)

  5. His bets year was 21-22 when he had something like 10 goals and 12 assists and was a nice +26 in 62 games

so what this shows me is he can be a faster, bigger, younger slightly better  version of okposo or Girgenson. He can be our top defensive forward who may score upwards of 30 points. If he helps turnaround an atrocious PK unit it’s a win of a trade. Levi can help the PK turnaround too as our goalie sv% on the PK for the other 3 goalies is hideous

Even if he signed right now he should not play in a Sabres games until and IF we get eliminated.

I hope he signs and has a nice career for us.

Probably correct but can he be worse than our bottom 2 pairing?

problem is with 4 games in 5 nights to end season he won’t get a practice in.

He'd have to sign an ATO deal to be Amerks eligible. He can't have it both ways. Either play for the Sabres and burn a year, or play for the Rochester in the playoffs.

It's a shame. Can you imagine sending Levi down just for the Calder Cup playoffs?

You’re right so I think he’ll get the first option as he holds all the cards

  8. Johnson is incentivized to sign soon and play a couple of games with the Sabres so he can burn one year of his entry level deal. Wondering if he can sign in a way to burn a year, play a couple of games with the Sabres, then play with Rochester in the Playoffs?

if he doesn’t sign at all we still get a 2nd in comp next year

I would love to see refs start calling the Instigator more often in clear cut cases like that.

Would love the refs to call penalties in the 3rd the same way they call them in the 1st. Last night was embarrassing how many holds, hooks and takedowns they allowed in the 3rd

I know many are dubious to the value of the plus/minus stat, but this isn't about that. Do you know who leads the Sabres without peaking?

    Owen Power at +12.

He's my rookie of the year

With the ice time he eats up he absolutely is the rookie of the year, though he won’t get it. Currently he is by far the Sabres best all around dman, and probably their best all around player. Granted Dahlin is playing hurt. Winning the lottery for him was an absolute grand slam.

    and……he’s 20

So, Greenway has scored a few times. Maybe he has the potential on this time to produce offense on a regular basis?  The thing is, after watching him score a few goals, play a bunch of games now, I still have no idea what I expect of him going forward.

I don't think there has ever been a player on a Sabres team that they aquired, that I have followed him on the ice as much as I can, that I have had less of an opinion on. I really have ZERO idea what he is or can be.

I think Greenway is playing hurt - prob a hurt shoulder all year long - and I expect a different player next year. His little scoring streak is on a limited scale but is still a bit promising

Here's how I see the goaltending going for the rest of this season:

    Carolina - UPL

    Rangers - Levi

    Devils - Comrie

Then depending on if we're eliminated or not

Sens - Anderson if we're out, Levi if we're alive

BJs - Levi if he didn't play the Sens, or UPL

I think Levi has to start tomorrow but probably won’t go both games of the b2bs next week. Give UPL one of those games and Anderson the OTT game when we’re eliminated.

hopefully Johnson is signed on Sunday and plays 3 games next week too

And Stillman was not on the roster to leave unprotected.  I'm also reading all of your "improve the defense" comments.  Borgen doesn't improve the defense all that much.  And so pointing out Borgen is not really relevant to your point of improving the defense.

You can go on and on about how to improve the defense, but at least use relevant arguments.  Borgen would not fix the situation in Buffalo right now.  Not if you are advocating for players like Chychrun.  If you think it takes a Chychrun to improve the team then Borgen is not at that level.

There were to options to leave unprotected: Borgen and Risto. Risto ended up getting a 1st+ in a trade, Borgen would have not gotten even close to that

I think it will be Levi again, and that the boys won't quit and will come out and play hard.  And Levi will excel again.  We just need to bury a few more chances.

BTW, there's been a fair amount of talk that Detroit has packed it in for the season, and that the Sabres' build strategy has proven better than Detroit's -- but the Sabres are only 2 pts ahead of them!

They are still very much alive if they win tonight and get some help in the other games.  The Islanders and the Penguins are both playing good opponents tonight (TB and Minny, respectively), and Florida is playing Ottawa, who is also still in it.

Detroit has won the last 4 of 5 and won last game 5-0; strange way of packing it in?

Greenway has 2 goals in his two games since returning from injury.

From watching him in the past and watching him when he got here, something was not right. I’m convinced he was trying to play through something and gut it out. I don’t think he is in top shape to end the year.

He is a guy I really want to see come to camp next year when he is healthy and see how he does under Donny. There is a lot to like in his game and if Donny can bring the best of it out like we have seen with so many other players then i think this will be a really good pickup longterm.

Granato says the same - he can’t wait to work with him when he’s healthy basically

Sabres are like Rasputin they just won't die

Simply not losing to the Flyers twice, Blackhawks and Blue Jackets would have given them the points they needed

And the other 3 teams have bad losses too. There are also games we shouldn’t have probably won and did
