  1. Hellebuyck is a dream but a pipe dream. I think the cost is too high (though we may be bidding vs nobody). KA Adams wants to Levi to play at least have the games not 30%

    goalies who they should target:

Demko, would be pricey but the perfect time share candidate. Prob is Vancouver won’t tear it down and trading Demko would kill them

Fleury - pricey contract wise and would he wave to come?

hart - there should be a lot of teams in on him but Briere is asking too much plus there may be a waiting game going on to see if Hart is implicated in the CAD scandal

IF they land Hanifin, personally see him anchoring the 3rd pairing (or 2nd if Power anchors the 3rd).  They'd have the ability to ice 3 extremely balanced pairs that way with a playmaker and a stay at home guy on each:

    Samuelsson - Dahlin

    Power - Clifton

    Hanifin - Lyubushkin/Johnson

    Spares: Stillman - Johnson/Lyubushkin

Presumes Jokiharju is part of the package for either Hanifin or something else Adams tries to bring in.  And that D could be mixed and matched depending upon situation or opponent and also doesn't go to crud with an injury or 2 (even at the top of the food chain).

You don’t pay the price of what Hanifan will cost to play him as 5/6d unless you’re cutting down power and dahlins minutes significantly and giving more to the 3rd pairing. Doesn’t mKe sense to do that

Maybe so. That is the thought.  But Clifton was a 17 minute guy that played 5/6 with a top contender so while I do think Clifton will add something and help us, we still have to see.  We are banking on DG elevating Clifton’s  game just as we are banking on him elevating Greenway.

I think the defense has been improved some amount that has yet to be quantified.  I question keeping the status quo on the forwards and goalies.

Clifton played top 2 minutes for the first 20+ games when mcavoy was recovering from injury. His analytics were elite

clifton played top 4 minutes for the next 40 or so games until they traded for orlov, when he moved to a 5/6 role. His analytics were very good in the 4 role not as good in the 5/6 role

Boston ended up benching him in game 7 when he had a bad game 6 vs fla

key take always - he plays up to his playing partners level. Know who’s an elite NHL defenseman? power

He was the best PK dman in the league this year. Playing for Boston helps,  it he was better than the elite Boston D too. He gave up an expected 2.35 goals/60 minutes or 4 GA in 102.5 minutes. That’s an insanely low total.  Buffalo’s PK was abysmal.

Clifton is a very good low cost gamble.

He does have a say in his contract situation though.

Yep - he could extend with Buffalo when the trade is consummated or he could bet on himself, play out the year, put up great stats in Buffalo and sign anywhere when the cap goes up $4m

I guess they could just waive Comrie and Bryson and have 8 Dmen, 13 forwards and 2 Goalies

I thinking (maybe hoping) that Olofsson and Joker are traded, along with a B level prospect and some draft picks, before camp opens in Sept.

That’s the plan I gotta believe

Ryan Johnson is a wildcard for me. 22 years old, 4 years on one of the best teams in college. I don’t know how much AHL time he needs. He might be ready to step in by mid season if not the start of the year.

    Muel Dahlin

    Power Clifton

    Johnson&Johnson

    Stillman Boosh

Joker is packaged in a deal for a goalie upgrade. Bryson can go

Yep big training camp for Johnson, savoie, rosen, rousek and maybe even Benson. I could be terribly wrong but wouldn’t be surprised if Benson is NHL ready before savoie.

I'm advocating for Hart as think he our best option at this point based on current contract and ability to keep or kick dependent on performance of him and/or Levi. That said it's probably a waste of time as don't expect Adams to trade for him.

I think this is the trade to make if Adams is willing to pay the price. Grab konecny too, will be pricey

I tend to agree, but I think Stillman would get snatched up.

Which Johnson are you referring to?  Veteran Erik or prospect Ryan?

Yep stillman and Bush would be claimed most likely that’s why I think they stay in the active roster as 7/8 d. Joker I believe will be traded, if not he’s the #6. Jokers much better in a limited Role against lesser lines

He's been hovering around .900 and 3 GAA since 2019-2020.  That and his salary make him a hard pass.

On a horrible defensive team so keep that in mind. He’s a well above average nhl goalie. In saying that, he doesn’t fit what the Sabres need

GMKA and Sabres fans both want:

    1- Sustained long term success

    AND

2-Make the playoffs in 2023-24 season

Unfortunately, some moves that help #1, hurt #2 and some moves that help #2, hurt #1.  GMKA has basically made most of the moves he can make that help both or at least help one without hurting the other.

Note: Trading VO and/or a low end D or F prospect might be the last ones remaining that help both.

Central to the debate now, are those moves that seem to help one, but hurt the other.

I think the goaltending situation is the trickiest of these to solve since both Levi and UPL are good long term prospects, but both have question marks in the short term.  No matter what decision GMKA makes, it will carry significant risk.

As a fan, I am more focused on #1 and form my opinions around that objective vs. #2.  I do acknowledge that making the playoffs and gaining that experience enhances #1.

Problem with trading #68 at this point is who really covets him and who could pay his 4.8m salary. It almost seems to me he’ll have to go in a bigger deal. If Carolina could utilize him (not sure of this but maybe they need a goal scorer), maybe a trade of joker, Oloffson and a first for Pesce?  That’s 7.25m in salary going to Carolina and 4.025m coming back. Maybe we have to hold half of oloff’s salary? Pegs doesn’t like doing that BUT it’s only for 1 year. This senario is still cap positive for us; +0.825m

I think it’s somewhere in between. There’s no way this is definitely a playoff team and there’s no way it is not a playoff team.

We could be much better with a better #4 RHD, a true #1 goalie or another top winger. I wanted another winger before Quinn got hurt. And I think it’s foolish to count on Quinn much this year….

Our third line looks average at best this year…. Greenway - Krebs - Casey….. and Casey is probably going to the 2nd line….

I wanted four good lines…. I wanted to add a player like Killorn before Quinn got hurt…. I think Savoie and Kulich should stay in minor leagues….

I don’t see why KA didn’t want his talent to force their way on the Sabres…. Looks like we’ll be giving them jobs instead.

From KA’s press conferences, I think:

    1. Goalies stay as is, he seems to have much more faith in UPL than the masses. Barring an injury, he’ll attempt to send Comrie to Rochester

    2. Forwards - I think he adds one more, though not sure it’ll be a big name Tarasenko type, though hope so. Tarasenko or Tatar would be great at this point. KA said they were in on a few UFA forwards on 7.1, and very close on one of them, but it didn’t work out. Means to me he’s still hunting

    3. Defense is the big ? Is he still in on Pesce and the process is being held up by karlsson’s eventual trade? This would be a great move.  If joker or bush was involved in a trade for a Pesce type, we’d still have 9 nhl d contracts. Bryson would be sent to Rochester, if he’s claimed = who cares

The problem with Gibson is that the simply hasn’t beeen a good goalie the past few years.  He has been outplayed by his backups 3 of the past 4 years.

I wouldn’t do a Hellybuck trade because of his contract situation.

If we are going to trade significant assets to acquire a goalie, why not go for Carter Hart who could form a solid duo with Levi, or flat out become the legit starter, for several seasons?

Yep - I think hart or fleury or that goalie whos name starts with a D makes the most sense. All three could come in and be a tandem with Levi. Gibson and Helly would be 1A to Levi’s 1B and I don’t KA wants that

  13. ANA’s D made last year made Buffalo’s look like the top of the league. Gibson is still very good, certainly better/safer than UPL. In saying that, I doubt KA has interest given his salary and attitude. Apparently, He wouldn’t waive last year to come to the Sabres and would be really be okay with splitting starts with Levi?

I'd bet money you could waive Bryson and no one would claim him.

Correct - after last season’s performance nobody is paying 1.85m to claim him. He’s destined for Rochester where he belongs and will play well. That’s the obvious move to get our nhl defense contracts to 8. They’ll do the same for Comrie and get the goalies to two. Comrie has a better chance of being claimed but still less than 50% I’d guess

Nah, it'd still be under $40MM next season presuming Jokiharju is sent out in the deal for Hannifan and Dahlin bumps to $10 and Power bumps to ~$7MM.  And THIS year it'd still be under $30MM.

It is very doable IF Adams is willing to move enough assets to get Calgary to pull that trigger.

Correct and especially doable when your goalie tandem makes less than $2m combined and your GM has bargain deals on Tage, cozens and Sammi

Personally I think Clifton was acquired to fill the #5 spot and upgrade the PK and the grit factor.

Johnson is adding size, experience, depth and defence in a 6/7 role.

Joki is going to get flipped as part of the package in a trade for a better number 4 in a move I think Adams is still trying to make.

Does Ana or Winnipeg have a 4 type dman that they could include in a big trade including Gibson/Helleybuyck? I’m seeing cam Fowler on ANA - NMC though and $$ and Nate Schmidt and Dylan DeMelo (both have NMC) on Peg
