He played top line minutes for Boston for the 20 games mcavoy was out. Small sample size but analytics were outstanding. I’ll trust the professional scouts on this one

@Georgia Blizzard so you're OK with buffalo not making the playoffs?
Trades can also be made in the season. If the goalies aren’t playing like he hoped or there’s an injury.

Seravalli quoted Gibson saying "I will not play another game for Anaheim" Gibson and Hellebuyck out there with not much of a market
Yep - I wonder:
1. The cost for him at this point? UPL and?
2. Is Gibson willing to waive to come to Buffalo? He wasn’t willing last year and last year he wouldn’t have been sharing the crease with Levi

The better play is to sign Taresenko and then trade him when Quinn is healthy. Tatar is notoriously dead weight in the playoffs, Tarasenko just the opposite.
I don’t think they will, but that would be my plsy
Would love this but he’d only be traded if we aren’t in the playoff hunt

GM speak - why would he play his hand by saying, we’re still looking to trade for a goalie

Your probably right that they’ll get more him at the deadline than they will right now.
Yep, especially with the high probability that a contending team has a goalie injury. Only issue with waiting until then is if Helly doesn’t want to be in Winnipeg or if team is bad and his stats are his normal great stats

I think it's about 70% likely that the Sabres do not bring in a goalie, and they solve their roster issues by sending Bryson and either Stillman or Comrie to Rochester. None of those 3 is likely to be claimed, and if he is, it's not a big loss.
Yep makes sense though I think stillman would be claimed. Bryson would be the one sent down anyway

Trying to figure out the Preds
will Saros be available ? Rumour that they would have traded Askarov at the draft (mtl fans are furious their GM didn’t accept the trade)
if they are willing to trade Askarov are they thinking of a quick, on the fly rebuild, and extending Saros?
if so , is Askarov a guy you could pair with Levi for the next 7-10 years?
Interesting

I believe it was already figured out there’s a simple solution to this; Bryson goes to Rochester
Fair. He might be claimed but who cares

You are right about the kings there is an article in athletic saying they will have to operate under the 23 man roster due to salary cap and that they will be running with the Copley / Talbot tandem
Copley/Talbot isn’t a good tandem, it they’re currently 1.5m over the cap so It would be a struggle to fit Hellebuyck’s 6.1 in. If we’re in on Hele, I think we’re basically bidding against ourselves. KA knows this so hopefully he’s been deriving a less costly deal?? Winnipeg is definitely in a tear down rebuild stage, right? If so, Keeping Hellebuyck in his last year makes no sense unless they just wait until the trade deadline to trade him. 2024 1st and a top prospect (Östlund or Rosen) would have to be enticing to them?

That's just bad business and karma will likely hit buffalo
Fking Boston is never bad business. Bad karma, probably with all the contracts in the upcoming years KA will have to deal with

They could still screw over Boston with an offer sheet. Hopefully Adams isn’t afraid of pissing off some of his GM bredren
Yep - for Swayman - I would love it but doesn’t seem KA’s ammo. But then you’d have 4 nhl goalies so trading UPL would have to be done

It would be very easy and plausible for the current roster to take a step back rather than forward. They need to finish the offseason. Adding a solid bottom 4 D and a bad one, while losing Quinn, is not enough.
You are correct. Given the current roster construction, KA can’t be done. Common sense says it makes no sense as is

Think it’s a good trade for 1 year
who’s the competition? Devils and Kings?
I think NJ dropped out of Helleybuyck and the kings signed somebody already. Only competition for Helleybuyck really is Winnipeg keeping him. Honestly though I’m not sure if KA has interest in him

Wouldn't a press conference be scheduled then?
I believe they're still on some players because of that
I think they trade a defenseman, probably Joker as unfortunately Bryson is worthless.
I think they surprise us with a name UFA forward shortly and trade Oloffson
Trading for a goalie? I’m not sure it’ll happen? I could see them thinking that the upgrades of the UFA defensive defenseman will help the goalies but this would be a dangerous gamble.
Interesting trade for a goalie, not really discussed is with Boston. They’re in desperate need of cap space. I could see them trading one of their goalies to us for UPL and a prospect.

I'd love it if Winnipeg would make this trade.
I’m honestly not sure what winnioeg’s needs are. If these players would even be attractive to them, though Rosen would be. I wouldn’t hate using the 2024 1st too as I’m expecting that pick to be in the 20s and our prospect pool is already tops in the league, or close

I think the team is done in FA.
I also expect that VO isn’t getting moved as long as Quinn is out.
And the team will start camp with a 3 headed goalie monster.
Here they are, your 23-24 Buffalo Sabres.
I don’t agree. Too many rostered players. One could be eliminated by sending Comrie to Rochester but 9 NHL defensemen is too many and KA never talks like he did about a player (Oloffson) without following through by trading him
-
1 minute ago, tom webster said:
You don’t get full cap relief by burying Comrie in minors but your point is taken.
Good point, and his roster spot would also be replaced with an entry level contract (say Savoie for instance) at just under $1m
all in all, KA’s approach here of signing too many NHL contracts is puzzling unless trades are coming.
The takeaway here is we could afford a Helleybuyck/Gibson type goalie via the proper trade and still have plenty of cap left if we wanted to get one of the top remaining UFA forwards: Kane, Tarasenko, Tatar, Bertuzzi or Dumba for D.
in saying that I don’t think KA will be allowed to spend to the cap ceiling

Let's say they sign a G for $4M. They then trade UPL (837K) out for some mid-level pick. That's still 3.2M off of the 5.8. I'm not saying that they *can't* make a move, but they'd better be judicious about it. IF they can get some team to take Bryson for futures, that would help a lot.
I don’t think there’s an UFA goalie worth it to sign, and certainly not for a price of $4m. I see Jones out there but really don’t want him.
any new goalie probably comes via a trade

Currently we’re at 5.8 over with 2 extra NHL contacts than permitted. So let’s say we do the following trade:
UPL, Oloffson, Joker and Rosen for Hellebuyck. That’s 6.1 of money coming in and 8.1 going out. We’re now at the correct amount of nhl rostered players and have 7.9m in cap space. After we send comrie down to Rochester we’ll have $10m. If we trade for Gibson instead of Helleybuyck using similar players, the cap would be at +9.6m.
we’re very healthy cap wise and being over the rostered player limit something has to be in the works trade wise for a goalie.

I asked this in the Benson thread and I’ll ask it again: would any of those who were advocating to trade #13 for Helle now trade Benson for Helle?
I’m assuming the answer is no, but if not please correct me.
At this point, is anyone on board with trading any of the following for Helle (and I think an extension would almost certainly not be part of the deal):
Kulich
Savoie
Rosen
Östlund
JJP
2024 #1
Of the assets on this list, I would only trade the 2024 #1 for Helle, and I’m not sure KA would trade any of them.
I would include Rosen or our 2024 1st (hope it’s a late one)
Rosen, UPL, Joker for Hellebuyck. They may need two goalies, so they can have Comrie if they want him too

Hellebuyck is a pipe dream.
1) He's a UFA after this year
2) He's going to command way to much AAV and Term when all we need is a guy to take some work from Levi as he developes.
3) it flies totally in the face of everything KA has been doing.
Correct MAF makes much more sense. MAF for UPL and Joker

Ana set a modern nhl record allowing 39.1 shots per game. Of course Gibson wants out, I’m sure he said it and the agent has to refute it. Goalies needing a Gibson type are few and far between. I know one and there may only be one match. But Eklund says we’re by far the leader in Hellebuyck……
