I don't have the mental stamina to use Twitter. I can understand his decision.

Thanks, Turbo44. That was Tuesday 10 April 1973 against Montreal. The Sabres won game 5 in OT, 3-2. I remember that call as part of the B side of, "We're Gonna Win that Cup."

I think all of his original episodes and specials are on YouTube.

I see. Yeah, females were rare at most SF cons. The Cleveland club had several and, oddly, much of Blake's 7 fandom was female at the start. The largest student club at Case Western Reserve, the Star Trek club, was almost exclusively male. If you don't believe that a university existed in 1986 where the largest student club was the Star Trek club, get a load of this: Back in the 1985-6 academic year, I had a friend who whose work-study assignment was in the mainframe security group for the new VAX-11/780's. There had been a data breach of some sort at another geek school, so he was tasked with writing a script to find whose passwords were far too obvious. With an 8 character limit on things, he knew people might have passwords like "password." So he wrote a script to try passwords during the first weekend of Spring Break. Embarrassingly, almost 10% of accounts had the specific password, "Spock" -- no variation, just "Spock". "SPOCK", "spock", "5pock", "$p0ck", and numerous other variants pushed the total to well over 10% -- professors included. The list was every 1 and 2 character combination (42, B7, ST, and DW came up often) with a boat load of references to science fiction, Monty Python, the Goodies, Dave Allen, Benny Hill, class codes (e.g., the freshman programming course was CMPS-131; that and variations on it turned up frequently), people's initials, and their student numbers. That cracked over 80% of the passwords on campus. Needless to say, an awful lot of people had to change their passwords after returning to school.

Thank God it was wrong.

I think it's because Levi has such gaudy numbers. I personally would be OK with our goaltenders in 2023-4 being, in alphabetical order, Levi, Pekka-Lukkonen, Portillo, and Subban with maybe a vet helping on the Sabres if they still need seasoning.

Are any of the Duffs in hockey related to Dicky Dunne, erm, Dick Duff?

She lives in the Pittsburgh suburbs with her husband; her 3 kids have graduated college. I remember her calling me at MSU when "May Day!" went national verifying that it was the same announcer as in 1986. As I think about it, was it on WBEN at that point? In my mind's eye, for some reason, I can see the radio set to the middle of the dial. I remember we lost to Hartford and that FallCon was where John Nathan-Turner announced that the Peri character had been killed off a half hour before his first panel, which was Part Eight of "The Trial of a Time Lord" -- 25 October 1986. So that makes the game the 5-4 loss to Hartford on 24 October. I remember JN-T brought the studio cut of "Shada" to the con -- the first time it had ever been shown legally in the western hemisphere. Aside: some incidents from FallCon (plus other things I can enumerate another time) are a large part of the reason why several writers for the new Doctor Who include references to Buffalo, NY. (Several Buffalo expats, including the group that ran FallCon, have friends on the production team and were told from the source.) For instance: aside from "Buffalo" being the over-ride password for UNIT computer systems in "World War Three", River Song was scripted as "the Beautiful River Song" in "Silence in the Library" while the fried ravioli and medium wings in "Voyage of the Damned" were JN-T's favourite American foods. There are several others. Oh, and FallCon cemented my reputation among Big Name Fans as an eccentric questioner. Kids and grandkids of several friends of mine claim this as part of their evidence that I inspired the Indian character in the iCarly episodes, "iStart a Fan War."

This is why I think of a base line-up 5 forward lines, 4 defencive pairings, and 3 goaltenders.

Just saw an announcement on hfboards that he passed away. Aside: like SDS, the founders of hfboards are expatriate Buffalonians and are still Sabres fans.

Thanks, @PASabreFan. I was thinking about doing the same thing. I'll start. I was driving from Cleveland with a friend of mine to a science fiction convention in Niagara Falls. I turned on WGR when I got in range. At some point, Rick went nuts on a goal where someone made a great move. She then looked at me and said, "who IS this guy?" She became an RJ fan at that moment.

A personal favourite. "There's room on the 'Believers' Bandwagon.'" Remember that we could have lost him to throat cancer. One of his most important calls. The original call... Here's on of my favourite CDs And Greg speaks for all of us. Maybe not the greatest song, but he loves RJ as much as we all do. I have got to find my audio tape of this. 12 April 1973. I've had the tape for almost 50 years. I have it memorised Paul Wieland: The fans are now cheering, "Thank you, Sabres." RJ: They're unbelievable. Listen to them, 16,000 strong, chanting, "Thank you, Sabres." Meanwhile, the hockey game isn't over with yet, there's still 28 seconds remaining. On the face-off, back to Carriere. THERE'S a blast! That one's deflected wide. Martin has it in the corner, back to Robert. He took a shot! That one bounced over Perreault's stick. Perreault goes after it in the corner. IN FRONT OF THE NET! That one's knocked away. Perreault goes after it again. He's STILL got it in the corner. OUT IN FRONT! THERE'S A SHOT, ANOTHER SHOT! SCOORRRES! RICK MARTIN! And the crowd are going crazy again! Rick Martin, with 12 seconds left in regulation play, gets the Sabres' second goal of the game. And out comes the debris again! They may be serving breakfast here before this one's all over. PW: I'm telling you, Rick, there is no way that Richard Martin wasn't going to score that goal. He pumped away at that rebound and almost drover it through Kenny Dryden. He really hammered at it. And Perreault made the play. And the fans, Rick? This is amazing, Rick. I mean, they know they are not going to win the hockey game; let's face it. I mean, it could happen, but it won't. But these fans are acting as if this game is going into overtime. The guys have really got to picked up by this, and they have really played well. Milt Ellis: Second Buffalo goal score by number 7, Rick Martin. RJ: Martin gets the goal after whacking away at it in the crease. ME: Assists to number 8, Jim Lorentz,- RJ: Lorentz and Perreault get the assists ME: -and number 11, Gil Perreault. RJ: That cheer you hear is for Gil Perreault. Well, the Buffalo Sabres may not win this hockey game, but no one will have to look into a programme to figure out who is number one in these fans' hearts of the two teams on this rink tonight. 4-2, Montreal leading. 12 seconds left in regulation time. And the fans start the "Thank you, Sabres" chant again. PW: The game might be over with like you said, Rick, but I don't think they really want to to leave here. RJ: I'll tell you one thing -- Joe Crozier hasn't given up yet. He still hasn't put Roger Crozier back in the net. No goalkeeper in the Buffalo net. It's Robert, Martin, Perreault, Terbenche, Lorentz, and Carriere out there. On the face-off, it goes back to Peter Mahovlich. He puts it right on Lorentz's stick! Lorentz in over the blue line to Robert in the corner. Trying to get it in front of the net. Robert's got it behind the night again, trying to work it out in front! Oh, and Dryden makes the save. And the siren goes, the game is over. And a standing ovation for Buffalo as the two times line up at centre ice to shake hands, now. And the crowd just keeps on cheering. ME: Shots on goal in the 3rd period, for Buffalo 16, for Montreal 4. RJ: And now, even Joe Crozier and Scotty Bowman are shaking hands. And talking as they head off the ice ME: Shots on goal for the game, for Buffalo 43, for Montreal 23. RJ: And that's the way it ends up. 4-2 for the Montreal Canadiens over the Buffalo Sabres, eliminating the Sabres from any further competition. ME: The Buffalo Sabres would like to thank you for your support and hope to see you back next season. RJ: We'll be back in just a moment. This is Sabres Hockey.

This whole sequence with the two goals began with a dubious icing. I am getting fed up with icing where the defending team coasts back to allow the puck to cross the line or a player deliberately goes the wrong way to avoid playing the puck on a potential icing. Before the 1994 lock-out, you could do everythin you could to stop a puck from getting past you or go at top speed and the linesmen still would not call the icing. I prefer this because it keeps the play going and does not reward gaming the rules. IMHO, the second a player turns the wrong direction, plays a nearby player instead of going after the puck, or stops going at full speed, the linesmen should automatically waive off the icing.

The unsung formula of Cup winners is also guys from deeper in the line-up rising to the occasion. Brian Campbell goes from #6D to #2D in one hit. Tim Connolly rises from #3C and helps take over games in the 2006 playoffs. IMHO, Tuch, Girgensons, Okposo, and Samuelsson are exactly the kinds of players who fit this idea. -
Welcome to the board! I absolutely want SHK III and NRK banners.
-
As much as I don't want Cody Eakin on next year's team and as bad as his play has been here, I clearly under-estimated his value to the kids *this* year.

Yup. Even a top team could go sub-0.500 in this stretch. I just want the spirit there. Having said what I said above, this is absolutely true too.

Rick IS an artist. He has the ability to take what he sees on the ice and translate the visual into words which somehow become the correct pictures in your head. THAT is an art.
