I posted this last night.... Detroit Is in a rebuild. Dylan Larkin is their “Jack Eichel”. If they were to move him, it would have to hurt the other team just like it would hurt them to move him. They would demand significant pieces back. Cozens, Reinhart, and 2021 1st for Dylan Larkin. Sabres get that 2C for years. With a fair contract at 6.1 cap hit for three more seasons. Sabres become instant playoff contenders. (As long as the holes on the team get filled well). center spine would be Eichel, Larkin, Kahun (maybe), and Larsson (if we re-sign him) Detriot gets a promising center prospect who hasn’t played a second in the NHL and is completely unproven. He could or could not develop into an effective top 6 NHL center. They get a veteran winger who produces and can play on the top six with very good vision and passing. They get a future pick to help stock up on their pipeline. Now Detroit may want more, because Larkin is their Eichel, but IF JB offered that .... should Detroit take it?

Nope. I think they are banking on Ullmark improving. The overall team improving. And if they do get someone to replace Hutton it’ll be thru a trade of some sort. Not a UFA. But hey, we’ll see.

I’m not gonna personally read into JB’s comments. Maybe just maybe he doesn’t want to publicly say what he’s thinking and what he’s planing. And good for him. Sucks for fans who want to know exactly what his plans are.

I think there was a discussion or thread about this months ago. Some thought he would easily get to 100 ... at the time, I thought he wouldn’t even see 90. More like 82-85. I still think that.

Exactly! Grit, physical play, heaviness. Whatever word you feel warm and fuzzy about using. It still exists. It’s of course a far far cry from the days of “oh, ah, Sabres on the warpath”, but the rules have also changed thru the decades too. Instead of the majority of the players playing like that all season. Now you get a few players in the league playing like that all season. And a handful of others playing like that once March hits and playoff pictures start to develop. And a handful of others start to play out of character once the playoffs start and add more grit and jam to their game. It’s part of the reason playoffs are much more entertaining to watch than the regular season.

Has any GM in his position (his team out of the playoffs and on a losing streak) say in a radio interview something along the lines of ... ”this team I constructed sucks” or ”the team I constructed Is great, it’s the coaches fault” or ”if I had a president of hockey ops instead of just an owner who knows nothing about the hockey side of running a team, things would be much much better” I sure haven’t heard an NHL GM slam his team, or coach or owner. If you have please find the quotes, I’d love to read them. Especially if it’s commonplace and JB is the exception.

I remember those days too. Even though i was in my pre-teens. Unfortunately that part of the NHL we loved, is gone. The toughest heaviest guy in the NHL is who? Reaves, maybe? If he is, he would get his freakin clocked cleaned on a nightly basis by half the league if we time traveled him back to 1970’s NHL ? I would love a Tom Wilson type. He has a nice mix of skill and heaviness. There are a few others we could litter our roster with. Perhaps if Borgen is ready? Hopefully JB or whoever can add one or two more “semi-heavy” players who have jam but also can pot 15-20 goals a year... or more.

Since that “nastiness” you speak of has been slowly coached out of the game on all levels for the past 15 years, you’ll be hard pressed to ice a team full of them AND not get caved in offensively every. Single. Game. That kind of team would be lucky to get 1 goal every third game. And heaviness usually comes at a cost of speed in most instances. So it would be a slow heavy team who can hit and fight and scare a random team. But not nearly the firepower To compete in the NHL of 2020. What you seem to speak of went away long ago. Some grit? Sure! Some heaviness? Sure! But the last 20+ Stanley cup winners were not full of those types of players. However those who weren’t that way in the regular season, played out of character (generalizing) and added some grit during the playoffs which helps the team overall. No one knows for sure which of our current lineup would play out of character and be gritty in the playoffs except Simmonds. Maybe Risto, maybe McCabe, maybe Larsson, maybe Girgs, maybe KO. Other than that ... not much. And too many who MAY add grit and heaviness when it counts. Can’t rely on a maybe.

I’m gonna go out on a limb here but I think he was referring to the Bald for Bucks part of the night. Not the actual loss.
