The offseason so far - Are the Sabres better?
PerreaultForever replied to GASabresIUFAN's topic in The Aud Club
why?? -
Oh good god he's nowhere near playing in 26/27. Sabres might do it, but they shouldn't. A normal team would hope for him in 4. Sabres probably 3, but any sooner would be another rushing the D mistake.
-
Non typical would be big guys who maybe aren't high enough because they have skill shortcomings or speed shortcomings. Guys you develop for the AHL team support system or if they are good enough they become the guys who can chuck 'em to quote Lindy. We go for the too small to be high picks with speed and skill we think might turn them into................I guess Victor Olafsson. I'm going to the extreme ends here but that's the general idea. You can make arguments for either but we don't generally do both. We go the one way only and that's what makes it "typical". imo you also weight your draft back end towards D and goal because goalies take the longest and often bloom late and D take longer to develop than forwards.
-
It is, and this was not a good draft, so the goalies were a good gamble.
-
Ya I just put my draft summary in the main draft thread. I like Bedkowski. I like both goalies. I'm okay with Mrtka. I hate the trade and the rest are indifferent or disliked but likely irrelevant.

Going for the goalies was good. This was not a strong draft and most of it will never play in the NHL (even more so than the average draft). So goalies often develop slow and late so those are good gambles. Islanders probably not happy nobody bit on letting them get Hagens (as they apparently offered the Montreal picks to everybody 4-7). Boston came out good on getting him 7. The top 10 went roughly as expected. Figured Martin would jump up to somebody. Martone fell further than I expected and Desnoyers went slightly higher. Sabres went for the big body but it's not a bad pick. I think Detroit gets the steal of the first part with Bear at 12. I'd have taken him over Mrtka myself. Absolute worst case he's Yanni Gourde but I think he's better than that. Philly reached for Nesbitt but I do see his potential. Fits with them too. I like their draft a lot. As ever, size came into play more than ever in this draft. The Florida effect is real. I give the Sabres draft a C+ or B- I am okay with Mrtka. I like Bedkowski. I like both goalies where they were picked. I dislike the rest or am indifferent but it's a weak draft so none of them probably matter anyway. I don't like the trade. Hence C+ rather than B-. If we'd taken Murtaug instead of the trade it would be B- Now wait for free agency and to see if Byram gets moved or not as well. I expect little more to happen with the Sabres to be honest. -
Adams has right shot D on the brain

Really only a net of 2 if you count dumping Jokiharju at the deadline as well as moving Clifton. People here seem to think Timmons is better than Clifton. I don't. 2 RHD in a draft isn't that remarkable. League as a whole wants RHD. We are overdue to draft some. Neither drafted RHD is realistically within 3 years of playing here so in terms of the roster from last year it's currently Jokiharju, Gilbert and Clifton out. Kesselring, Timmons and Bernard Docker in. Kesselring is the best of those 6. The rest pretty much washed out imo. So slight improvement. I would still like one more D added if Byram is moving out but maybe he isn't. -
No. Not going to make the NHL.
-
Another typical Sabres pick. Meh.
-
Typical Sabres pick. No thank you. Virtually no chance of making the NHL imo.
-
No idea. Sounds like he needs to add some muscle.
-
This is a perfect 7th rounder. Very unknown but lots of upside. This is exactly where you take this type of player and can't have enough goalie prospects. Relative to where the picks are taken this might be my favourite pick of this draft for them.
-
That was going to be my first question 🙂 Late round goalies never an issue with that.

Well so is Mrtka but fair enough. Yes they had more picks. I like what they did though and as you know I'm comparing their rebuild with ours as they did it differently. I'm also just kind of looking at the competition and thinking playoffs. Draft plus trades. Next is free agency. Right now Montreal looks better. Detroit looks a little better. Ottawa same. Rangers same. Blue Jackets still better than us. I see no chance of playoffs for the Sabres as is. -

Nesbitt was picked higher than ranked I agree but if he turns into Adam Lowry (which he could) nobody will say they over drafted in 5 years from now. Martone to Mrtka is a bad comparison as it's forward to D but he is a power forward in the making and will body past defenders. Amico is better than Bedkowski and has a much better chance of actually being in the NHL but yes, they are both big and mean. I hope Bedkowski works out. I also really like Murtaugh and we could have picked him instead of trading. He's not as good as Carter Bear but has some similarities. -

Oh very different for sure. I have no issues with Bedkowski. It's not an either or I'd have been fine with both given where we picked. I don't like Timmins. Montreal made the big move in the second round. I'd bet Philly had their sights set on the Russian but Montreal jumped them and snagged him. Montreal has a Russian scout. That's probably a smart organizational move for them. I see him as the potential second round steal. -

I'm on a delay. Currently in round 4. I'm on the west coast and sleep in. So I'm only talking about rounds 1-3 in that regard. -

What is the Sabres internal CAP# for the 2025-26 season
PerreaultForever replied to LGR4GM's topic in The Aud Club
I don't see us spending a ton in free agency so unless something big still happens we will be well below the cap. I suppose he might dump a pile of cash at Byram and keep him but we still won't spend to the cap. -

Yes Philly did, but in this draft it's all size and meanness. I have seen the D moves but I think Clifton was overly maligned in a bad system, I don't like Timmins he's worse than Jokiharju was. Kesselring I like, but I do not think he's as good as some here think either. We still have Samuelsson and imo the D isn't all that much better and is still dependent on Power being better. Which might happen, but might not. The draft picks are all way down the road guys. -

But round 3. Lesser version. I hope he works out and develops into an NHL player but he's going to take years to get there. I don't like this trade. I think Kettles will be better than Timmins (for example). -
71st overall, David Bedkowski 6'4.5" 221lb RHD
PerreaultForever replied to LGR4GM's topic in The Aud Club
I don't have any issues with this pick. In the very least he will balance out Rochester's team balance eventually. Maybe make the NHL and be a solid bottom guy. -

Except he passed on some big (and mean) RHD at the top of the round to trade for cast off RHD and he shipped out our own tiny RHD and dumped the soft one last year so are we actually any better???
