Also he started a year younger, played for a far worse team, and was put into much higher leverage situations given there was no one else really besides him. Edit: I would have taken 7 or 7.5mill a season over 8 years when he signed his bridge deal.

From what I've seen of Power so far, I project him being worth about $8 or 9 million a season when he peaks. His draft class was seen as weak overall, and in most years he might have been in the 3 to 6 OA slot. My opinion is it's only his #1 OA pick that has him projected in the $11M ballpark. If starts using his size defensively, and greatly improves his shot, I can be proven wrong. Given he still played smaller than what he is in college, I'm thinking he doesn't have the big dog mentality in him.

Two comments... 1 Even though I'm happy he's signed, this one may set a precedent amongst the players and the days of us getting team friendly deals like the last 3 big ones might be over. 2 I'm not signing any long term contracts with Power until he shows he can play better defense. Picking up the defensive side of the game can take a few years for a young D, but I wouldn't want to take the risk given what I've seen of him so far. He needs to work on his shot too.

Tonight VO earned the spot he already had. Keep him. Benson makes the team. Greenway would be easily replaceable. Don't like his game at all. Love the spark from Krebs, but I don't see him staying ahead of similar talent in the pipeline. I don't think he's around when this team wins the cup.

I don't think that line would fly in this day and age of the analytics era. Back then you could kind of say what you wanted, and if it sounded good, it would stick. No one questioned it. Fuhr was in the right place at the right time on being on maybe the best offensive team ever. Unfortunately, we lost Andreychuk due to the old hockey trope that Fuhr knew how to win.

The Sabres lost every game by a goal against Mtl. 3 in OT. They were the eventual cup winner. When I first heard about the trade I was irate. Not because I knew Hasek was going to the the eventual GOAT. I was mad we lost our #2 goal scorer. Andreychuk had 54 goals that year. All this to pick up a goalie that was statistically worse than Hasek. The line at the time was Fuhr "knew how to win". Who the F$&! couldn't win on those Oilers teams?!?! Sabres win the cup if that trade doesn't happen.

Easily the worst trade in Sabres history, when you consider the Sabres probably win the cup with Andreychuk and Hasek.

Just some additional context... xg stats always seem to devalue big shooters like VO. I think his value is greater than his advanced stats. On the flip side, the eye test shows he generally isn't very good at making plays or playing defense. I will say though, there's been times he's looked VERY good as far as playmaking and forechecking goes. He just doesn't seem to have the natural drive to do it on a consistent basis.

Right now the mindset is you can still get a better deal on the secondary market... and there's no benefit in purchasing way ahead. Until enough people get stung by not getting their tickets upfront you'll see the box office tickets sitting there. That will happen at least a month or so after this team is a legit playoff team AND the Bills/Sabres fans go into full hockey mode after the Superbowl.

What have you seen of him that I haven't? For a guy as light on talent as he is, you'd think he'd be giving it all to stay in the league by using his size. If he won't do that, give his spot to someone that actually cares.

If we're being completely honest with ourselves, we'll have at least 3 or 4 F's not playing opening night that are far better hockey players than Greenway. Nearly every rush his line took ended on his stick.

Always happy to be wrong if it means the Sabres are better for it. I'm just questioning if he's the answer for us to score more goals than get scored against, which in hockey, trumps "physicality" 10 times out of 10. If physicality leads to more goals, then sign me up... but in BOS, that was not the case for him.

Based on what I'm reading here, most people think he was brought in to be a number 4D. I would want my number 4D to be responsible for creating more scoring chances than they give up. Maybe you think it's a BS stat, but it's not like he has a long track record of being an effective defenseman in years before last year either.

It's a percentage of expected goals for vs goals against, meaning he gave up more scoring chances than he created. He was one of the worst on the team, and one of the only ones below 50%.

He had a sub-50% expected goal % on one the best regular season teams of all time. Why does everyone have him penciled into the top 4?

Sell high! Did he put on the weight everyone wanted, or is it just the lack of talent on the ice? He does look really good... really engaged.
