Larsson with 20:09... Second among our forwards to O'Reilly's 20:32. Bylsma can learn to lean on the Johan more, freeing O'Reilly for offense.
-
And I haven't seen McDavid in a few periods :w00t:
(I'm almost certainly going to regret saying that).
And now that we can't jinx it --- Don't worry, Larsson's on it. (And Risto and Gorges, too.)
-
Good work by Ennis and Fasching on that final shift --- but no shot as a result. Good win. Looking forward to the annual Vancouver pilgrimage.
-
Nice stops by Lehner there. Finish this kill!
-
Protect Samson!!! (once we bury this 5 on 3). This is something we need to improve from last year. How many 5-on-3s did we score last year? any?
-
The last Ennis shift was good --- hey! so says SN, too. Back to the power play. They're getting even more undisciplined.
-
Good to see Ennis on the PP -- hope he gets a point and some confidence going. (meaning -- he's on the 2nd unit, but Talbot is open for gaining confidence). Ended quickly thereafter though. And Larsson with a little poke and forces the offside. He's going to be a great playoff guy when we finally get there, methinks.
-
Great glove and good on Gorges. What?!?! The SN is congratulating Lehner on skating away. But what if he'd suplexed McJesus? Probably a penalty...
-
Fasching starting to use the body. That can't be bad.
Fasching is good and gaining confidence, but I do want to see him start to throw a hit if he can't get there in time to win the battle/tie up the puck.
-
Finally caught up thanks to intermissions...
Great to see us for the turnover and quickly deposit it in the net. Lovely! And the SN crew has been saying we've gotten all the bounces, but we've earned them. Very solid game, indeed, thus far.

We shall double our efforts!
It's true. All they have to do is work harder! And GMTM is not as forgiving as I am.
In the first game, we looked like a disjointed team that hadn't played its lines together yet because of the World Cup and late preseason injuries, going against a fully rested team with its roles known. I fully expect to rebound as O'Reilly, Okposo, Kulikov, and Ristolainen round into form. We know Reinhart's line, whichever it is, is going to threaten offensively and we know Larsson will draw the occasional cheapshot for his line harassing the opposition all game. The question is how long does it take for us to gel -- 3 games, 10 games, or until Eichel returns from injury? We'll get this sunken sky sorted out.

I am most displeased with their apparent lack of progress.
-
Motti was talking a little smack about my sorcerer’s ways and how my sad devotion to the ancient hockey gods hadn’t helped me realize Risto’s contract was an overpayment based on Corsi and plus/minus, or given me clairvoyance to properly set up my lines. So I gave his neck a little pinch and I said, get this, “I find your lack of faith disturbing.” You should have been there. It was pretty cool.
The Force is strong with this team.
Some typhoon remnants are rolling in here in the great northwest, but as long as there's power the game will be on (although perhaps on slight delay because it's unlikely I'll get out of the Star, through traffic, hit the grocery, and back home before 4). Otherwise, game on.

Score ?
4-2 Sabres.
Some dander raised at the end, Ray talked about the most gruesome injury he's seen was the player who got hit in the throat and swallowed his tongue sometime in the 2nd, and it sounded like and overall solid game minus our top defensemen, O'Reilly, or Okposo.

This is the kind of thing to make a man drink on a Wednesday. Don't judge, I've done it for lesser reasons.
Any day that ends in -day? Drink.
Hopefully, it's trivial and O'Reilly won't miss the opener. Even a hamstring would be bad -- we're then looking at starting the season without our top forward or defenseman.
-
Someone around here said Fasching was doing a great job on the boards and getting pucks to his teammates who then didn't finish. Imagine if those two work, and they you substitute Larsson or Girgensons in the real line up. It's worth a try for a game or two.
Fasching has looked good -- last night with Larsson and Deslauriers. And earlier he started the tic-tac-Baptiste goal.
I still think he starts the season in Rochester where he can get top-six minutes. But a Sabres fourth line of Moulson-Girgensons-Fasching (or Larsson at center, but I like last year's 3rd line) should be able to pin other teams in their own end. DLo can split with either winger as needed for more physicality.
At this point his barely an AHL guy.
Austin was on Rochester's third pair last season, right? Leadership and willing to fight, which are good, but not someone to log minutes.
I guess it's good he's getting work with Burgdoerfer, Falk, Nelson, etc. who could be his partner for part of the season.
-
Damn. Open gate and Kulikov.
-
Sportsnet just pointed out Baptiste is missing from the bench. Any news from the home side?
-
They're an offensive dynamo!!! Imagine how good they'll be with Matthews and Kadri in the lineup!!!
That said, they've looked quick and (well-coached) in control of where they need to be.

world cup + tonight. Turnovers and nothing positive that I have seen. But, t is a small sample size so hopefully I have a false impression
I saw only 4-5 periods of the WC... And tonight I think our entire D looks to be sleepwalking a bit. (They're trying, yes) but they aren't hitting or harassing much. I remain hopeful, to my chagrin. Hell... He'll totally come around to awesomeness!
-
It's true, Austin should be the 6/7 in Rochester.
Another goal. I don't expect much out of the preseason, but I'd like to see more than 1/3 of the skaters be our NHL guys. Just for chemistry purposes.
I'm kind of nervous about Kuliokov
Anything you're seeing tonight in particular? Or is it a World Cup + tonight? (It's only his first game)
-
Yowsers Austin telegraphed that pass.
-
Hmnm. The score isn't so nice. But on the last penalty kill Falk had a good active stick. He and Nelson may be the scrapping for 7th D -- depending on whatever Franson does.

Just sitting around the house tonight w my dog. Felt like I should be doing something important, but couldn't put my finger on it.
I admit I laughed.
As much fun as it has been to watch Team NA, Team USA really could have used some of its young scorers. Not sure Jones, Gostisbehere, or Trouba would've made the roster though.

Girgensons with atonement for that earlier tap-in. Good shift by the Ennis-Girgs-Baptiste line. And Gio, Foligno, and Larsson follow up with a strong shift. Nicely done.
