Doubt he got much, if any, play. But players on last place teams won't. All the numbers suggest he's in the same class as Toews, and within spitting distance of Kopitar and Bergeron level players. I'll try to remember to dig up that WAR model later that had him as the 5th most valuable forward in the league.
Though I think the Toews contract is a mess, the real mistake was that thing they gave Seabrook. Good lord. That team would be better if they had traded Seabrook for assets (like the Blues did with Shattenkirk), and used that money to keep Saad. Sort of the mistake that Lombardi made in LA: got too attached to players based on past performance, and handed out a retirement contract for it.
There very well may be. I just don't think he should be dismissed out of hand because of the Leafs, when the Leafs have been a train wreck for 50 years and he was never *the* decision maker, and he has been in other more successful organizations.
The difference, of course, is that some of what's in my link has facial validity. Brandon *does* have the Pegulas' ear, and there's no real indication that that's a good thing. The rest is whatever, but I think that's the key point.
Because I'm a nice guy, sometimes I like to toss a little chum in the water to fuel the Brandon hate: https://twitter.com/TrendingBuffalo/status/855117003685847041
Right. Bergeron is an astounding value, and it'd be unfair to expect that contract to be the benchmark. Ideal? Yes. Benchmark? No. A bad one. A very very bad one. If you were a droid, I'd send you to have your memory wiped as to forget you ever had the thought.
Strictly speaking, he probably doesn't deserve more than Bergeron is making. But I'd still rather have O'Reilly at $7.5M than Toews at $10.5M. Ultimately he's a Selke-caliber center, and his pay is in line with that value.
I took what Friedman said differently. I simply thought he meant they didn't have a specific target, not that they had a bag over their heads wondering why it was dark.
He may not have anyway. I know it's been speculated the NHL/Olympics thing would be a deterrent to KHL players coming over. Well, it was reported this morning that Vancouver lost its KHL addition for this reason.
I only think that's true if it's widely perceived you are firing them unfairly. I don't think too many will think it's unfair the house has been cleaned.
