We weren't promised roster surgery by the Sabres, so, there's that.

This is true. But in addition to Friedman, we had our own @tom webster tell us they knew they had to fix 2C and add another top-6 forward. I suspect they wanted to do more but just couldn't get it done. Why not? Could be any number of things, but I don't think Botterill deserves any benefit of the doubt.

Just think how good they'd be if their GM went and upgraded the defense instead of paying Tavares.

Their GM did upgrade the defense. He brought in Muzzin and Barrie. Maybe would have been better off with Gardiner than Barrie, but still.

  3. I have a radical 2-step process to improve the team:

    1) Keep the good players, such as Reinhart.

2)Trade the bad players people think are good and trade the young players who are currently bad but have enough upside to return value in a trade.

    Good stuff here.

The Pegulas have an addiction to rookie GMs.  And they’re rookie owners, ones who had no background in professional sports - they weren’t professional athletes and their parents weren’t team owners.  As a result they have no time-tested standards to which they hold and evaluate their rookie GMs.  The results (both franchises) have therefore been entirely predictable.

Sabres fans are paying the price for Botts learning on the job.  He is failing at his job and, barring an unforeseen turn in his approach and the on-ice results, I expect him to lose his job between now and July.  Within the next five years, I further expect we’ll have to suffer through Tim Graham depth pieces in The Athletic about how Botts is at peace and thriving in his new role as GM or Asst. GM in some other city, sorry that it didn’t work out in Buffalo but oh isn’t it great that he has learned his lessons the hard way about sitting on his hands for too long and over-focusing on culture instead of talent and has now gotten over his fear of trying to win.  Etc.

As long as the Pegulas continue to allow their sports teams to act as developmental organizations for sports executives, I fear that those organizations will continue to act as developmental environments for players as well.  Players will continue to leave Buffalo half-broken and go on to thrive elsewhere and give intimate interviews reflecting on how fighting through the dysfunction in Buffalo allowed them to grow mentally and made them better people and players, etc.

Regier wasn’t kidding about the suffering that was coming.

At what point do the Pegulas stop being considered rookie owners? They own two professional franchises and have had the Sabres for almost a decade.

    Anthony Duclair has 9 goals.

Burakovsky has 10. Plenty of forward talent out there on the cheap who could have helped, and Botterill gave us...Jimmy Vesey. 0 goals and 2 assists. It's not Jimmy's fault he's skating with Mittelstadt...but still.

If I hear one more of these idiots say the word lacking urgency, I am going to break my TV with my cat.

Quit the sport if you can't find the urgency.

They've all learned they can't tell the truth publicly. Urgency isn't the problem, but what are they going to say? "These 7 teammates are trash and must be replaced?"

Isn't that his job? We're about to almost 40 million dollars in Reinhart, Eichel, Skinner and Dahlin. They have to lift the rest. I'm not about to blame Vesey for any of this.

Dahlin is on his ELC and makes less than Scandella, so not sure why he got roped into a money-driven comment.

Anyway, no, it's not Eichel's responsibility to make bad players good from the bench. He's off the ice for 40 minutes per game, the other guys matter. He's leading the team in offense by a mile and on pace for 97 points. Vesey has 2 points and 0 goals. It's absolutely the fault of Vesey and the rest of the supporting cast who stink.

*sigh*  You too? Don't stoop to this.

Narrative is nothing more than an opinion you don't agree with. We all have them.  I hate that this place has taken to being so dismissive of other opinions this way.

I disagree. Narrative can be a simple opinion, I suppose, but I don't think that's how it's used. When opinions are presented as fact, or when facts are twisted or manufactured to fit an opinion, that's when "narrative" gets used.

RK’s latest roster not working either. Again time for drastic measures.  Can we call up Cozens for an emergency 9 games?

Maybe it's because the roster your guy Botterill assembled is a roster without a winning combination? Krueger should absolutely change up the top two lines, but it really won't matter all that much. The team needs forward talent just as badly as it did before the season began.

I've watched that guy get erased in every playoff series he's ever played in aside from a late power play against the Miller Canucks, which was the worst team I've ever seen in playoff hockey.

And regardless, I'd still add Gaudreau - but you missed the half of the post that points out how much it would gut our team

    Jim Mora playoffs gif

Skinner, montour, miller, vesey, Jokiharju. All trades after ROR.

True, but in none of those cases were we moving a bigger name player, as would be expected in a Ristolainen type deal, for example.

Correct. All of Botterill's trades post-ROR have been picks/prospects going out, not NHL talent. Doesn't mean Botterill is gunshy, but the trade dynamics aren't good comparisons.

My suspicion for awhile has been Botterill learned the right lesson but is applying it to the wrong player(s). So I don't think he's afraid to get burned (though I can appear that way), I just think he's sticking to his guns on players who just aren't as valuable as he wants them to be.

Realistically what do we really have to trade? Risto and a bunch of depth guys who have no to little value. Risto isn't going to nearly get you a top six forward. Only in a fans fantasy is he getting you a measurably better forward than we have already. So what additionally to Risto do we have to offer? Guys like our third and fourth liners and Risto? Still nit going to fetch you a quality top six guy in my opinion. Risto is not as coveted I suspect as we'd like to believe. Unfortunately we're stuck pretty much until next season. Hope our present guys can turn it around at this point.

    Mittelstadt.

Lots of folks around here also spent summer telling me McCabe is a legit top-4 defenseman on a good team. With his contract, if there are any GMs who share that assessment, then he'd have some value.

Lastly, if Botterill goes all season (or until the deadline) again without a significant trade and we end up with another 78-ish point clunker, he should be fired.

I've heard several people in the media calling Lamar an "athlete never seen before at the QB position".  Did they miss the Mike Vick years?  He ran a 4.3 40 and could throw the ball 70 yards.  I'm not sure what they are talking about.

Lamar is quite a bit more accurate than Vick and better at working the pocket, which is maybe what they're getting at.

Lol the stat guys on twitter still beg for Pominville

The fact that an argument can, (and it can) be at least reasonably made that he'd be a good addition is, in fact, an issue.

This is the point. It's laughable to want to add Pominville to an NHL roster. That it's not laughable to discuss it in the context of the Sabres? Well, that really says it all.

What happened to the promise of the first 5 games?  What went wrong so quickly.

The same thing that happened to Tampa's poor start: a team's true quality may not be evident after a few games, but it will be over a longer stretch. Bad teams can play well and good teams can play poorly, but very rarely will they keep doing those things.
