  1. One thing that has me even more excited about Hodgson the more I hear about it, is his apparent elite hockey sense. Some here have mentioned it, and media members have said it too. He's just got those hockey smarts you don't teach. The reason this excites me is I remember Mike Robitaille talking about Vanek, and how he's always one step ahead and the reason some of his passes/decisions look bad is because he's just thinking on another level than those around him. If Hodgson is on that level, I think we can see some really great things from them.

  2. kind of like what kassian has gone through this year, his first year. but you had already written off kassian after 25 games as not "being the answer to lucic". whatever

    :wallbash: :wallbash: :wallbash:

You STILL don't understand what I'm saying. Lucic's style is innate, it's something you're born with, it isn't learned over time or developed. Guys are that way or they aren't. You either have it in you bring it physically every night, or you don't. I think Kassian has more offensive ability than Lucic, he's a beast along the boards down low cycling the puck, and I think the'll be a very good player. Maybe even great. His hockey skills can be developed, and I think they will be. But his temperament? It's certainly possible that he learns to be intimidating all the time, but if I have to put my money down, he is what he is.

With respect to Hodgson being a #1 center, I think that depends on what you mean by #1 center. Do I think we just acquired somebody on the level of Malkin, or Backstrom, or Sedin? No, I don't. But he doesn't have to be that to be a top line center. With the right wingers, a 1b or 2a center can be a legitimate top line guy, just as how second-tier wingers can be first-tier with the right center. If Hodgson develops into Patrice Bergeron 2.0 (I think it's the most apt comparison, but add a little more offense and subtract a little defense) I don't think anybody will be complaining.

  3. Wasn't the "bust" tag mostly due to the back problems that seem to be resolved now?

Not really, he struggled a lot in the AHL last year and had fans questioning if he'd ever be a top 2 center. Now a lot of fans thought he was their future captain, and at worst, was going to be a go-to scorer as Sedin ages.

  4. LOL @ that Canucks thread.

Funniest part is them thinking for a while we were trading Myers back to them.

I think the funniest part was McKenzie referring to Gragnani as a "high profile young defenseman"

Fans almost always overvalue their prospects though. Just look at the stuff said around here about so many of our draft picks.

This is definitely true. The one thing I'll say is that a lot of Canucks fans were saying how just last year they thought Hodgson was a bust, but this year he won them over with his play. It's almost the polar opposite of what has happened with Kassian and Sabres fans. We thought he was our answer to Lucic, and his play convinced (I use this word very loosely, maybe it's better to say his play raised concerns) us otherwise.

  5. Right. We gave up a "what if" for a "producing now" player. Short term, at least on paper, its a win. Although new players in Buffalo dont seem to fit in and instantly produce.

I hope he doesnt wear the cursed #19

According to WGR this morning he's wearing #12. I guess you could make the Kotalik case, but he's a winger and Hodgson's a center, so I'm going to choose to not make that case.

  6. Why not play with Vanek? What other center in Buffalo now has had any chemistry with him?

Call it First line Second line, whatever.

Pominville and Roy have been playing well together lately. Through a wing with them and one with Hodgson and Vanek and see how it works.

First, that lineup was what I expect to happen, not what i want to happen. However, SDS brought up a good point and I think there's a decent chance he gets a shot with Vanek. I'd like to see Ennis get a chance with Vanek and Pominville, but I won't complain if it's Hodgson...basically, I want Roy off that line. For the first time in my life I'm actually excited about a western road trip, just to see how this works out.

  7. Does Hodgson go into Line 2 and take over for Ennis who i believe has been playing the best hockey out of anyone outside of pommer?

What do the lines look like now? The fact is that with Goose and Kassian gone, we got smaller, already on a team that lacked toughness which have been in many discussions on this website.

Personally, I'd put him in the top 6. I don't actually expect that to happen though. My guess as to what will happen:

    Vanek-Roy-Pominville (ugh)

    Leino-Ennis-Stafford

    Gerbe-Hodgson-Kaleta

    Tropp-Ellis-Boyes

On second thought, I would've be shocked to see Hodgson and Ennis flipped. With Hodgson's shot maybe he could be Leino's Briere here. Personally I'd like to see Ennis on top, Hodgson #2, Roy on the 3rd line, but I don't expect it.

  8. I go back to a few weeks ago when he was asked if he was told to stop fighting and responded "you're not to coach" and stormed off. That there told be that Lindy got into his head and tried to change him. The Sabres never knew what to do with Kassian and Vancouver will benefit from it.

Yes, I'm sure it was all Ruff's fault. I'm sure it was nothing to do with being pissed off about a reporter basically telling him how he's supposed to play. Personally, if somebody who knew very little about my job started telling me what I was supposed to be, how I was supposed to be working, I'd be pretty annoyed too.

And who says Vancouver will know how to use him? I spent some time reading Canucks' forums last night, and one of the interesting things that came out was a particular criticism of Vigneault: he's brutal on young players and defensive responsibility. Seeing as one of the criticisms of Ruff is that he has too short of a leash with young players, it'll be fascinating to watch if Vigneault is any better for Kassian's development.

  9. hearing all the canucks fans talk about how Kassian is going to be this tough guy to protect the Sedins is hilarious. They are acting like he is some super badass that will destroy all... lol

They sound kinda like us before this season :P

How much you want to bet he breaks Kaleta's orbital bone Saturday?

I would bet a hefty amount he doesn't literally accomplish that.

  10.

Do I come across as pessimistic? I try very hard to toe the line between the two.

For what it's worth, in my short time here I think you do a good job of finding middle ground.

IDK if this is good or bad... but that makes it seem like he would wanna be here more and that will be a good thing

I view it as a good thing. I want guys who are confident in themselves and think they are capable of playing a bigger role than they are currently playing. The first step to becoming a great player is believing you can be.

The team needs centers because the GM hasn't acquired any previously. Did Regier just wake up from a seven year slumber? Didn't he notice until now that the Sabres were terribly weak down the middle?

They have to trade away their top prospect who has size and toughness to fill a hole created by the GM. The Sabres drafted Kassian to fill a need: size and toughness. The need still exists more than ever.

I will agree with Regier that it is easier to acquire tough guys in the summer than it is to get talented centers. I think Hodgson can be very good so I hope this works out. I think trading Gaustad and Kassian makes a soft team even softer. In this respect I think the Sabres are thinking this year is lost because there is no way this team is built for the playoffs. Teams will try to bully the Sabres even more now until the end of the season. It could get ugly.

The Sabres draft has to be excellent this year. I suspect Regier will deal one or more top picks to pick up proven NHLer's.

Only time will tell who got the best of the trade.

I'm not at all concerned with the rest of this season. If we have a miracle run, great. If not, whatever. To me it's all about what we do in the offseason to get ready for next year, and I think today was a positive first step to improving.

  11.

If it is so easy finding a power forward in this league......name the last Sabre who could score 15 goals....and WASN'T a complete Puss?

Where did I say it was easy to find a power forward? I said it's easier than finding a top line center. Is Hodgson a top line center at this point? No, but neither is Kassian a legitimate power forward at this point.

  12. I don't know who is treating Kassian like a bum. I think those of us who really like this deal believe 1 of 2 things (and maybe both): 1-It's harder to find a real center than a power forward, and you have to give something to get something, 2-Kassian isn't the guy we want him to be (Lucic). That's not to say we think he's awful, or going to be a complete bust...just that he isn't the physically dominant intimidator we thought/wanted him to be.

  13. Hodgson has 33 points in 63 games playing on Vancouver's 3rd line....averaging under 13 minutes per game. It's not like he was playing with the Sedins. Kid is really impressive on paper (admittedly I haven't watched him play much), and most Vancouver fans seem to be flipping out. Said it when trade was announced, and I'll keep saying it: I LOVE this trade for us.

  14. I don't understand all the crying about losing toughness by trading Kassian. This team needed a real center. Now we have one. Stop whining.

....and Kassian isn't the "tough guy" everyone wants him to be. Is he tougher than Stafford? Yea, ok, but way to set the bar low. I love the trade.

  15. I guess in the argument with Lindy it depends on which side you weigh in on.

If you think Ruff is done as a coach then perhaps you want Stafford yelling back. Perhaps you want Stafford telling Ruff that he sucks and his system is killing the team.

if you think Ruff needs better players then you think Stafford is the problem and needs to go.

If you think they both need to go then it was just pure entertainment to see two guys going at it.

If you think they both need to stay, well.... let's not go there.

I don't know, I don't think even the biggest Ruff hater alive would have the audacity to say "Look! Lindy can't get Stafford to care, I told you he sucks as a coach!" as an argument against Ruff. If it were another player, then yea. But Stafford?

  16. Over the summer I read the existing 5 Game of Thrones books. First 3 were incredible, next 2 not so much. I'm sure most know this, but books 4 and 5 were supposed to be 1 book and for some reason Martin decided to split it into 2....and I think it's pretty obvious he did this. The pacing is just bad, and there seems to be a ton of pointless filler material.

Currently I'm reading all kinds of boring statistical books for help with my dissertation:

    Unifying Political Methodology--Gary King

Regression Models for Categorical and Limited Dependent Variables--J. Scott Long

    Econometric Analysis-William Greene

Safe to say, I would not recommend any of these to people unless they need them. That said I should soon be starting some books on the presidency and bureaucracy which may be interesting even to people not pursuing an advanced degree in political science.

This should be quite the upgrade from my old Pentium III cob-job with .996 GHz and 512MB RAM :o

Holy crap! You should think you're using a super computer with your new system.
