  1. My favorite football club takes the pitch tomorrow, in the city of Durban, South Africa. Manchester United first game of the preseason against Amazulu FC. 2pm kickoff on Fox Soccer Channel. Can't wait. It's a watered down (and youthful) squad United is taking with them on this tour, but still excited to see the Reds in action.

My footballing vacation is officially over with matches starting to begin!

It's great that real football is back. It always seems like the "off-season" is real short.

It's easy to be Man U fan ... :P . My favourite side is the other one from Manchester ... you know the one that won the Premiership last season and my favourite player is Edin Dzeko.

Don't the fans of Liverpool call their team the reds?

  2. Brunch today was yummy (as always).

For me: pomegranate mimosa and lime braised boar carnitas with mango salsa.

For the boy: lychee mimosa and "the Ritz"; a variation on eggs benedict with two 4 oz filets, gorgonzola, hollandaise sauce, poached egg, and a red wine reduction sauce over top.

Now if only I had time for a nap, lol.

    Yours sounds really good.

As for "the boy" (?) ... not so much ... .

  3. Bump ...

In the latest FIFA rankings the USA Women's side is again ranked #1 in the world.

Canada is hosting (and with being host receive an automatic birth in the tournament) the Women's World Cup next year.

Could a USA title be on the horizon? Revenge for their loss, on penalties, to Japan in the final 4 years ago would be sweet.

    =====

EDIT: Sorry, Canada is hosting the next tournament in 2015, not next year. And the US team lost to Japan in 2011, not 4 years ago.

  4. This season is going to suck. The producer doesn't know what kind of show he wants to put on, the director is overrated, the leading characters have grown stale, the new characters look to be disappointing, there wasn't nearly enough blood and guts on display last year — and that probably won't change this fall.

The Walking Dead also could be tough to watch.

It's mid-July and you are already in top game-on shape.

    Well done.

  5. NS: I'm watching Wimbledon (interesting that when a Scot is in the finals, he's "British"), and technology is working just fine there. Works fantastic in cricket, too. I don't see why goal-line tech is a bad idea for soccer.

A member illuded to the main concern in the Euro thread before I broke off this thread.

It's tradition that the ref has the final say and the biggest issue is that goal, or no goal, issues are extremely rare.

I would prefer they address the offside rules and the diving / theatrics in a no-non-sense way first.

No more of a travesty than South Korea or South Africa getting automatic berths as host nations, not to mention Poland AND Ukraine taking up two spots in the European Championships.

The real travesty would be that the World Cup would be hosted in a country where there's very little interest in football.

Soccer / football is the fastest growing sport in Canada. At the grass-roots level there are great systems in place. Instead of parents seeing little Johnny, or Jane, as the next Gretzky, or Lemieux, they are envisioning the next Beckham. Also, the US hosted, would you say the people in the US, in general have a keen interest in football?

It is true, as bun, pointed out that the national team does not get much attention, not from the fans, but from the powers that be. So, the problem is not the fans, or the grass-roots organizations. Canada has a rich tradition of welcoming new comers to the country, many of whom are rabid football fans ... one can see evidence clearly at a Toronto FC match. A problem is on the international level many of these fans continue to support their country of origin teams.

  6. NS, to follow up on my comment in the other thread, Canada has qualified for a World Cup exactly once. Its national sporting efforts are not soccer-focused, and there's nothing wrong with that. It would be a travesty, though, for Canada to get an automatic berth as a host.

On the other hand, it would be a great host for other reasons.

I understand your point. If Canada were host and, therefore, secured the automatic berth in the final tournament, it would mean that, in all likelihood, a more deserving side from their conference (North America, Central America and the Caribbean) would not qualify. And, that most certainly would be a trevesty.

  7. A new thread to discuss all things about the beautiful game.

    I'll start with:

Some things never change. Beckham will not be bending it in the next LA Galaxy match. He has been suspended for "provocative behavior", which earned him a yellow card. That warning put him over the magic number and was suspended due to yellow card accumulation.

EDIT: Below is a link to the story.

  8. Bump ...

Just finished "Failed States" by Noam Chomsky, finally. Tough read and I had several start over moments and re-read moments throughout. I'm not sure who his target audience is, but it's not people like me. I think of myself as pretty intelligent. I graduated from college and went on to professional training. I am a professional accountant that is running his own practice. Maybe he is after the super intelligent PhD types, like our very own TrueBlue ... ;) . Now I like Chomsky, or at least I think I do, as pointed out he is hard to follow.

Starting "The Cellist of Sarajevo" by Canadian Steven Galloway. Picked it up in the Halifax airport while waiting to board Air Canada AC860 to Heathrow and planned to read it on that over-night flight. Never did and it ended up at the bottom of the pile. The story is historical fiction and chronicles the lives of three ordinary people struggling through the siege of Sarajevo during the Bosnian war. The title references Vedran Smajlović the cellist who played his cello for 22 straight days to hour the memory of 22 Sarajevians killed in a motar attach while lining up for bread. Vedran was very upset at the publication of the book and it's reference to him, although the account was historical in nature, it was fictional. Two famous photos of Vedran playing in the bombed out National Library, in 1992, are below.

There is nothing like quality time with your children. F'N Fantastic is right!

  10. My Grandmother remains in the hospital after open-heart surgery, though she was supposed to leave several days ago. Each day, some new problem pops up that requires her to stay another night, and she is miserable. Yesterday, her heart started beating irregularly again, which the surgery was supposed to fix... Just hoping that the new medication they put her on works and she can leave the hospital soon, and we can all resume our normal lives...we haven't been able to plan or do anything, out of uncertainty of her schedule...

    Sorry for you troubles.

I will keep you and your family, especially your Grandmother in my thoughts and prayers. I hope she gets home soon ... the sooner the better and has a complete recovery.

  11. My day was in the crapper, then my girlfriend showed up and surprised me with homemade lunch. It's a 45 minute drive to where I work from her house  . It's not Friday, but i needed to share that, so the Awesome thread it is

    Happy nooner!

    AWESOME ...

  12. You know, even old New York was once New Amsterdam.

Actually, if I am not mistaken, the Dutch "purchased" (from the Seneca "Indians" ... I don't like that term ----- First Nations) the area that is now Buffalo, NY around 1800. Someone started calling it New Amsterdam, but it seems like he was the only person to do so and the name didn't stick.

    Not since 1453.

Having said that, I'm not sure if you've read this man's novels. I haven't read them, but I thought that you might be interested in them - given when and where they're set.

Thanks for the heads-up. I have heard of him and his treck, but have not read any of his books.

    FYI ...

Istanbul is one of my favourite cities.

    haha

I would love to see a modern take on Buck Rogers.

I'd prefer a modern remake of Duck Dodgers ...

  13. I actually think that this picture shows why there are more concussions in the NHL today than there were in the past, players choosing a shaved head over one that looks like that.

    Look closely, very closely ... it's not real ... it's a wig, man ... a man wig!

Is twitter down or is it just me? Awesome.

I guess all the twits are here ... is that not what they call themselves?

  14. I alluded to this in a previous complaint, but now I need to complain even more.

I've had temporary full custody of my three year old son for 3 weeks now, with a hearing scheduled for next Tuesday. His mom (my soon-to-be ex-wife) and her live-in fiancee are being investigated by DSS for child abuse. Both the investigator and his pediatrician are ready to claim it's abuse, and not "slide related bruises" as mom/bf claim (my son, in detail, has explained what happened to 4 different people, saying he was punched repeatedly by the bf). So DSS turns it over to the police two weeks ago, and the detective has yet to act on it. When I told the DSS guy on Tuesday, we was very upset, because he "gift wrapped" this for the detective, and said he wished the detective would "get off his duff and get to work." The DSS investigation is supposed to be over, with the results released, tomorrow, just in time for court. But since the police haven't done anything, we have to wait until they finish their investigation, dragging this whole thing on even longer. Now I have to try for a continuance of custody on Tuesday, instead of just permanent full custody.

Needless to say this has flipped my world upside down, but my boy is doing awesome. He's never been better at daycare, and his teacher will be testifying on my behalf saying that the angry, emotional behaviors he used to exhibit on days when his mom would pick him up have disappeared.

I feel for you. There is no justice system that works for kids ... it's simple ... "what is in the best interest of the child" and do it, without all the run around.

If the part I bolded does not happen ... well, you know what you'll have to do, right?

    =====

It's coming up to mid-day here in Halifax and only one complaint from me so far. After some perfect weather the heat and humidity have been building for the last few days, with today expected to be the worst. Not so much of a complaint for myself, but this weather really exacerbates my wife's health issues.

  15. Only if a little Bettman figurine is in net and I'm shitting on him.

And I thought I'd be the only one that used those things for that.

i am old and takes longer to shoot, would likely get muscled out by big defense or penalty for delay of game. two minutes shooting out of play.... :bag:

    :w00t: ...

From another old guy ... awesome post!
