  1. I said on last Thursday's complaint thread that I was going to report on the good news the following day. However, with everything that was going on last Friday, I didn't have the time to fully disclose what happened.

    1. We finally bought a house and moved a lot closer to our respective jobs. My wife no longer has to commute 40-45 minutes to work. Now it's down to like 10-15 max. My commute is a bit shorter as well - especially at night! :D

    2. Right after we closed on the house, we filled out a preliminary application to adopt a child.

    Great news!!

Specifically about point #2. I know it can be a protracted process, but in the end it is my hope that God blesses you both with a child.

  2. PM'd you back.

RG&E was refusing to tell me or my apartment management all day what the status of power restoration would be. They've now updated it to midnight....on Friday.

    Oh, man!

You better re-stock up on those batteries. Either that, or stop ignoring Jo.

Seriously, I feel for you guys. Been there and done that, though. 10 days in the aftermath of Juan.

  3. Thoughts and prayers to all.

We have some wind and rain today, but as the storm double backs east we will get more over-night tonight and tomorrow.

Nova Scotia Power is notorious for having problems at the slightest wind, so I fully expect to loose power at some point.

A rodo we re-located earlier this fall has blown over already. I will spend some time securing it and double checking other trees and bushes, but I don't anticipate too much damage. Have packed away the deck chairs etc. for the season already.

EDIT: Lost in the focus, rightly so, on Sandy. BC had a powerful earthquake on the weekend, with some after shocks. It was in a pretty remote part, so I am not sure of damage.

    Bun,

You are out in BC. Any news?

  4. Atlantic City, on your own. 911 shut down and no first responders out.

During Hurricane Juan Halifax had there command centre (police, fire, army ...) set up on the top floor of an office tower downtown.

That is until they abandoned it just 10 minutes after it hit ... every person for themselves!!

  5. To everyone in harms way ...

    Good luck and stay safe.

The best advice we received was from a good friends 5 year old daughter, just as we lost power and phone for 10 days, as Hurricane Juan came ashore ...

    "duck, duck, Hurricane"!!

EDIT: Below is a link to information and photos concerning Hurricane Juan, for anyone interested.

  6. Another great life lesson from my very wise Grandmother (if you all recall anything of value in this life I learned from her) ... "it's better to be safe than sorry".

People do not tend to take these warnings seriously.

Back in September 2003 Halifax and all of NS was warned about hurricane Juan. People did not listen. After the cat. 2 strom came ashore, with a direct hit on Halifax, it was too late. Most of the city was without power for a week +. We were without for 10 days. The army had to be called in to clean up the mess. Now people listen.

GoDD, my Grandma would be proud. Let the fools mock you, but at least you will be ready for the worst and hoping for the best. For what it's worth, we have a storm kit ready, an evacuation plan in place, a full tank of gas (gas pumps won't work without electricity), cash on hand (ATMs will not work without power) ...

  7. Something posted in another thread made me think of this. (Sorry, SFiNS, I'm just having a hard time finding "Bow to my will or kill your son" as awesome ;)).

I know I've complained about this before, but it came up again this week. I really can't stand when someone tells me "God only gives to someone what he knows they can take.". So, wait, you mean God thought about it first, and then still decided to be an a$$hole. Gee. thanks.

    No problem.

But, that's not exactly how it went down.

It's a parable to outline that this life is all about tests and how we do on them. Same with your second point.

  8. I'm curious which models you're talking about. Weather.com and accuweather.com (for instance) has Killington, VT in the 40s all next week. Where is all this snow going to fall if not there?

    National Hurricane Centre in Miami.

And they expect Coatesville, PA to be hammered. Per chance you've heard of it?

  9. The Hajj, one of Islam's pillars of faith ...

It ends today at sunset. Today is a fasting day. Eid starts at sunset today. It is to recognize the sacrifice Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) (may the Peace and Blessings of Allah be upon him) was willing to do at the bequest of God ... his own son. Both were willing to bow to Gods will and God, recognizing this, did not have Ibrahim sacrifice his son.

  10. serbia won't make world cup already 6 points behind Belgium and Croatia. wich is surprisinly low for such a good team.

was expecting a 3 - way tango till the end.

While there are still some matches to be played they are well behind and their program is a mess for many reasons.

I could not be happier that Serbia and their hooligans, in all likelihood, will be watching on TV.

Equally as excited that my favourite International side, other than Canada (who realy stunk up the joint, again and will not be playing in yet another WC final), of course, Bosnia is leading their group and are looking really good doing it.
