We lost that series 0-4. Do I remember this right: LaFontain was hurt, Muckler played Grant Furh instead of the unknown Hasek, Mogilney broke his leg in game four and the Candiens won several of the games--maybe 3?--in OT. They then won the cup.

That was 30+ years ago and the last time The Habs won the cup.

A few years later they cursed themselves, possibly forever, when they traded Patrick to his home town Nordique.  The Habs just know not to do that.  Ever.

I know, the Nords were located in Colorado at the time - makes no difference to the curse.

  2. Until I was 10 years old we had a black and white tv with 13 channels on the dial.  No real antenna on the roof.  Only received 2 channels - CTV and CBC.  There was only one hockey night in Canada and it was Saturday night.  I spent every Saturday night listening and watching HNIC - only the first period.

I spent my Saturday nights with Bob Cole.  He was fantastic.

In late 1974 (about a month or so after my 10th birthday) we got a colour TV - one of those that are a giant piece of furniture that took up a whole corner of the rec room.  A tall antenna two with a rotor on it so we could aim it south and pick up channels 2, 4 and 7 (and very rarely 29) from Buffalo.

I still lived for HNIC and Bob Cole - by that time I could watch the second period too.

Bob was a part of my life until adulthood.

He and Danny Gallivan in Montreal were the best ever on HNIC.  They rank only behind RJ and just a little bit ahead of Mike Lange in Pittsburgh.  Not sure who I would have fifth, but I think I would have to go with Tom Cheek of 'Touch 'em all Joe' fame.

Interesting note:  Bob was from St. John's on the tropical island of Newfoundland.  One of the only Newfs that one does not need a translator to understand - I love Newfs and Newfoundland.  Danny Gallivan was from Sydney, NS.

Still the greatest late night performance ever.

I am not a Doors fan, but this is great.

Also, great is the first glimmer of light after totality in your avatar.  Great to see that too, my friend.

What toll has time taken?   He is smarter and more patient as a coach..   He recently led a very young NJ team way past Buffalo and to their best point season ever.

I am still far more worried about the roster than the HC. Watch the playoffs and you see we need at least 6 players.

Ruff has 2 years.  Adam’s better get him a few more players.

I agree with you and I hope that it works.  His coaching style back when turned boys into men, but by 2005 he had a far better roster than the Sabres have now.  NJ was a young team, but a better team than the Sabres are now and Ruff was fired when NJ slid backwards.

Adam really has this offseason to build the team.  Seems that Ruff will be involved in that, which is key.

Both talked about the 'next level' - we all know that means playoffs.  I want it to mean cups and I have my doubts that Ruff will get the Sabres there - Adams too.

Again, I am hopeful.  As I have said many times, without hope there is nothing.

  5. Echo chamber alert.

I hope it works out for the best, of course.  I had to vote that it was a dumb move though.  I would have gone with Gallant.

It's been 25 years since 1999.  Almost 20 since 2006.  Time as taken it's toll on Lindy, as it always does for all of us.  He said he is super excited, but it appeared that he was barely awake.  Maybe he will be different with the players, but he was always very animated when he ever spoke with any of the press back when.

    @Thorny sighting.

The resemblance is uncanny, I say.

I am not sure about this.  Ruff is a good coach, but this smacks of desperation.  I hope for the best, as always, but my fear is in 2 years both Lindy and KA will be out on their *****.  Leaving us in the lurch once again.  On the cusp of 20 years with no playoff.

    Hey oh, @PASabreFan ..

In was wondering what happened to Randall Flagg. I enjoyed his insights.

He has grown up since joining as a teen over 10 years ago.

Married for sure and maybe children.

He has been known to take extended breaks in the recent years.

Keep an eye on the  Bills thread he often will pop in there around draft time.

  8. He is on an extended break he told Taro and me.  Lots of real life stuff going on that he needs to focus on.  He said that we would be back.  He did make one drive by post fairly recently (early spring).

Taro took his annual Lent break and has not returned.  I think the season got to him and he has extended his break.

  9. Maybe we should not read too much into this.

It's difficult for anyone in a new situation.

    It takes time.

Cliffton struggled at first, but was much better in the second half.

That said, obviously Granato and the video guy and some other guy could not get the Sabres to play consistantly or to the next level.  They were fired (is Granato's contract guaranteed ? - his extension was to kick in now), but looks like Matt Ellis and the rest are good enough since they were not fired - at least not yet.

Nothing worse than being on vacation and getting a text message from your boss that we need to talk when you get back. I reached out to him and asked what was up and he mentioned there was a reduction in workforce of 20-35% and that 75% of the physicians from our division where being laid off. It was done over a Zoom Meeting earlier that morning and of course the higher ups still had not shared the list of who was being cut with him( He is a very good friend of mine we have known each other since college so I know he wasn’t BSing me) I checked my work email and unfortunately I got an invite to the meeting and My Severance Package was emailed to me this morning.

Gotta love the practice of maximizing profits for shareholders over patient care, but that’s healthcare now a days

    Sorry to hear this news.

Crazy times.  You would be welcome  anywhere in Canada.  I hightly recommend Nova Scotia, especially Halifax.

That cannot be a good feeling.

I don’t know much about your industry but I am sure you will land on your feet. Maybe not on your radar but there is a shortage in Canada.

    Good luck.

Seeing that you failed to call dibs, I sent out an official invitation.  Sucka !!

  11. Voted Gallant.

He is available and is the best shot at getting the Sabres into the playoff next season, IMHO.

Right now all they need to worry about is making it.  Once they do that will make a world of difference for this team.

Once they start making the playoff regularly and Gallant wears out his welcome bring in someone to get them over the top.

Well, hockey forum: @Richard is it "Rich - erd" or "Ree - shard"?

    Good question.

Seems that this may be a 1 bomb drive by and we may never know.

It would be kinda neat to have another sexy frenchie Canadien around here, eh !!

  13. It's always a sad day when anyone loses their job.

Granato was hired to get the kids to a certain point.  That is what he does and he did it well here in very short order.

I really thought Granato would have one more season and then the Sabres would bring in the guy to get them to and then win in the playoff.

Who is out there with a playoff winning record?

Back in the day the Sabres brought in Bowman.  It almost worked, but he wanted to be GM too.  Turns out Scotty was a great coach, but not so great GM.

If it were me I would hire Gallant.

Why hasn’t Kevin Adam’s been fired???

Is this the one and only 'Tricky Dicky' ??

    Nice first post, I guess.

Do you prefer Mr. Tricky or Mr. Dicky ??

Paging @inkman to the Tricky Dicky thread.

I watched him play here in Halifax and felt he would be a very good one.

Very nearly the last pick in 2013.  He will be Flames Captain, I think.  If the Sabres could somehow get him I would make him Captain.
