Here is a date to mark on the calendar for draft nerds like myself - TSN's mid-season NHL draft rankings will be released in half hour show at 7:30 pm ET Jan. 27.

1. Mitch Marner (5th from 18th pre-season ranking) London, OHL, C, 5’11, 164 (34-27-38-65) I had reasonably high expectations for Mitch coming into the season as his even strength points per sixty minutes (ES 60) of 3.1 last year were the best of the first year draft eligible players for 2015 in the CHL not named Connor McDavid (who had 3.9). However, Mitch came out of the gates sputtering this season with only 4 points in his first ten games. Since then, Mitch has been just about if not the hottest player in junior hockey with 64 points in his last 24 games played. He kind of reminds me of Kyle Turris of the Ottawa Senators in his draft year – skinny as a beanpole but man can he play hockey. I think Mitch may have even more offensive upside than Turris. Size is not going to hold Mitch back due to his speed, vision, creativity, defensive ability and all-around offensive skills. He is simply an elite hockey player, something of a hybrid of Jonathan Drouin andNikolaj Ehlers, which is why I have bumped him up to 5th.

They will be compensated by being able to watch Eichel or McDavid in the Blue in Gold for the next decade or so.
-
Why would a D set the rebuild back or two? a player like Hanifin (in time) would be a huge boost to the Sabres scoring. Yes, I will be disappointed to if they dont get McDavid or Eichel but the next tier of Marner, Strome and even Crouse will still be huge pieces for this organization. Lets not forget the kid is 5'11 and only 17 -Its not like we are talking about Gerbe here. funny, i just read your comment after posting the same thing.

I know watching that game i was holding onto false hope but I was really hoping the Canes could hold on - even if it was only 1 point. Skinner hits the crossbar with 20 seconds to go. On a positive note - Carolina resemembled an actual NHL team vs an excellent opponent. can't same the same for the Sabres.
-
Hey, who was it that said that he wouldn't be surprised if Werenski and Provorov pass Kylington? Still not 100% sold with Crouse as #3 but he is an intriguing prospect. Friday night, Erie plays London on Sportsnet here in Canada. Will be good game to see Stome, McDavid, Baptiste and Marner
-
is there even 1 Sabres fan out there that think the team is better off if they win this game?
-
no matter what happens - as a Sabres fan the next 6 months will be extremely stressful and fun at the same time. Hell, the next two games vs NJ and Carolina will be as stressful as any game since the Canes - Sabres game 7 back in 2006. Hopefully we don't see Myers play in either.
-
If it was for the McDavid and Eichel factor I would hate to see Myers moved before we know how the draft unfolds. That being said - this team is clearly worse off without him in the line-up and if Murray can get a good prospect for him it may be worth it as the odds of the Sabres coming in last will significantly increase without Myers. Maybe another option is to trade Enroth for anything you can get - Call up Hackett and ride him for the remainder of the season. This may allow the Sabres to still come in last and keep Myers.
-
Totally agree - 3rd will be up for debate as we get closer to the draft. I would also think that Kylington has dropped out of top 10 ranking. Passed by Werenski and maybe even Provorov who could go anywhere from 5 to 10 at this point.
-
I don't see Centre as the biggest position of need Girgenson, Grigs, Reinhart and Compher - plus potentially a top pick in this draft who probably will be another centre. This team needs elite wingers to play with Reinhart at this point, IMO. Im not sure we have truely a top line winger anywhere in the organization. It will be interesting to see what they do if they pull off one of McDavid or Eichel - do they play wing with Rienhart or do they become the #1 centre and Reinhart moves to 2?

Sad to hear, great website. Hopefully Mr.Wuest will win whatever battle he is up against. -
When a team tries to decide between Marner, Crouse, Zacha and Strome it may just come down to team needs. http://ohlprospects.blogspot.ca/2015/01/midseason-top-30-for-2015-nhl-entry.html

I would love to have a direct line to an NHL scout but I unfortunately don't, just a conversation while at an OHL game a few weeks back.
-
Marner would eventually be Reinharts RWer i would doubt he would be in NHL next year but would go back to the knights you can see from DuClair and Domi how well Samsonworks with speedy wingers. not sure i would rank Marner above Zacha yet. the scout who i was able to talk with rated his skating as A+ and would rank him higher than all 2014 forwards.

Marner took over the OHL scoring lead (71 points) yesterday with a 2G 3A afternoon vs Sarnia. He now leads Strome by 4pts - each have played 36 games. Marner is now averaging 1.97pts per game for the season. However, over his last 28 games he is averaging 2.43pts per game. to compare - McDavid in his 18 games before being hurt was scoring at a clip of 2.83pts per game. Pat Kane scored at a rate of 2.50 pts per game in his draft year with the Knights. Kane turned 18 in November of his draft year while Marner won't turn 18 until May of his draft year.

Big game tonight between Jets and Islanders. Jets win would pull them even with the Blues and will help bring the Islanders back to the Rangers and Caps (both of whom are playing really well right now). The isles have been shaky over the last month - they;ve lost 3 goal leads 4 times (including game vs Sabres) and have won only 4 of 12 in Regulation. Still hoping we see at least 2 ping pong balls for the Sabres this spring.

Here is the December rankings from Hockey Prospects. http://www.hockeyprospect.com/2015-nhl-draft-rankings/ I totally agree with Zacha and Marner going 4 & 5 ahead of Strome and Crouse.

This is why I am extremely optimistic about the Sabres - on most teams he is a 3rd line winger. In Buffalo, He could very well be 4th on the depth chart by the time all the Sabres develope. As goal scorers I think he would rank below each of Armia, Bailey and Baptiste and there is no way any of them are 4th liners (none are physical players). So if 2 of the 3 develop into NHLers and Ennis is on the team - Fasching could be part of one of the better 4th lines in the NHL.
-
Hmmmm a first line for the Sabres - Reinhart with a guy who can out right fly and incredible skill as well? Could Mitch Marner be the perfect fit for the Sabres if they don't land Eichel or McDavid??

Looked at that too: Girgensons and Risto are both RFAs due a big raise in 2016. Foligno is also a 2016 RFA Grigerenko, Psysyk are RFAs at end of this season. Will have to spend some money on a goalie and probably get a top line winger out of FA or trade for one.
-
at this point I would trade a 3rd with Enroth just to stop him from winning all those Shoot - Outs!

My 2016 / 17 Buffalo Sabres LW Centre RW XX Reinhart xx Moulson Girgensons Ennis Foligno Grigorenko Armia / Baptiste / Bailey Lemieux Compher Fasching Defence Risto Zadorov Myers Gorges Pysyk McCabe * Hodgson and Gionta still under contract for this season. 1) If Hanifin is drafted - He slots in for Myers who would then be traded for #1 line winger 2) If Strome, Crouse or Zacha get drafted - They move into the #1 LW spot beside Reinhart. Armia / Baptiste / Bailey battle out for #1 and #3 line wingers 4) If Marner is drafted - he slots into the #1 line RW. #1 LW must be found through trade or FA. The line-up is extremely deep and talanted but will lack experience.
