Best Mock Draft - detailed scouting report and write ups: http://futureconsiderations.ca/ The 3 guys I've campaigned for at 21 (Svechnikov, Guryanov and Sprong) are all gone before Sabres draft. However, the means Meier falls to them which I would be ecstatic about.
-
the original poster said he should have been in AHL last year. All i said is he wasnt able to play in AHL last year - didnt matter what his nationality. This is total speculation but would any of the 3 ( Kovalchuk, Radulov and Sobotka) jump back to KHL today if they were still under NHL contracts?
-
not looking for a fight with anyone but a rather a discussion on alternative views. I just believe with the KHL in turmoil I don't see it being a leverage avenue for anyone who could make over $3million in the NHL. Bottom line (for me) is you take the best guy available at 21 regardless of nationality.
-
yes, I am saying that because he played in the OHL he wasn't eligible to play in the AHL. it doesn't matter what his nationality
-
I would be happy with Svechnikov too. Actually they are probably 1 & 2 on my wish list if pick 21 is kept. think Sprong would be 3.
-
Did they all sign NHL contracts to start with? So because 3 Russians have left the NHL for the KHL in the last 8 years you are going to write them off completely? Funny all 3 of those guys are rumored to want back to the NHL. what if a guy suffers a career ending injury after a few years? the risk is worth the reward in my view.
-
1) Tarasenko was passed over in 2010 by many teams because they feared he wouldn't leave the KHL when his contract was up in 2012. 2) Kuznetsov dropped to 26th even though he was considered one of the most talented players in the draft. http://www.nhl.com/ice/news.htm?id=764926 Wonder how many teams are disappointed they didn't take a chance on these players. Seriously, are you guys just posting without doing any research at all? Sabres blew the Grigorenko contract by playing him at 18 when he wasn't ready- had nothing to do with his nationality. Zadorov wasn't eligible to play in the AHL - that was the problem not that he was Russian. If you draft Guryanov why would you want to trade him before he develops? Im not sure of the uncertainty. The last 7 Russians drafted between picks 12-26 all signed NHL contracts.Wonder what kind of haul the Blues could get for Tarasenko right now if they wanted to trade him? but they won't - he is too good and they will match any RFA contract he is given. We all understand the economic problems they are having in Russia and the unstable footing the KHL is on? The Russian factor scares me as much as someone saying I won't get presents from Santa if I don't behave or I will go to hell if I don't believe in God. Its all much to do about nothing.
-
You can add Grigorenko - I'm not done with him at all. Its not really analysis - its just listing all Russians drafted in what I considered mid first round 12-26 now. The fear of drafting a mid round Russian is that he bolts for the KHL. Even adding Grigorenko all who have been drafted (cept the deceased) signed an NHL contract. So, as I said, except for all of them none of worked out for the team drafting them. I can see why Murray would want to stay away. Guryanov would be a top 10 pick if his name was Bob Smith from the Oshawa Generals.
-
I know mid 1st round Russians never seem to pan out. Varlamov - pick 23 2006 Cherepanov - Pick 17 2007 Kulikov - pick 14 2009 Tarasenko - Pick 16 2010 Kuztnetsov - Pick 26 2010 Vasilevskiy - Pick 19 2011 Zadorov - Pick 16 2012 So out of all the Russians picked between 14 and 26 in last 10 years one died and the rest have made an impact in the NHL. But besides all of them - none seem to have worked. out.

If Grigorenko can turn himself into a winger there is no reason he can't make the Sabres next year. There is definitely a Right Wing Spot available,
-
He has Zacha at 6 and Crouse at 11 as well. Thought I was out on a limb all by myself. Would be disappointed if Sabres take Bracco with both Russian wingers on the board. If Sabres go D with the 21st pick I wouldnt mind Bracco at 31 though. Id add Zacha and Rantanen to that list to try to move up for.
-
1) Edmonton – McDavid 2) Buffalo – Eichel 3) Arizona – Marner (think they will trade down though) 4) Toronto – Strome 5) Carolina – Hanifin 6) New Jersey – Barzal 7) Philadelphia – Zacha 8) Columbus – Provorov 9) San Jose – Werenski 10) Colorado – Rantanen 11) Florida – Crouse 12) Dallas – Connor 13) LA – White 14) Boston – Merkley 15) Calgary – Jeremy Roy 16) Edmonton – Samsonov 17) Winnipeg – Meier 18) Ottawa – Konecny 19) Detroit – Eriksson Ek 20) Minnesota – Svechnikov 21) Buffalo – Guryanov 22) Washington – Zboril 23) Vancouver – Boeser 24) Toronto – Bittner 25) Winnipeg – DeBrusk 26) Montreal – Harkins 27) Anaheim- Carlo 28) Tampa - Sprong 29) Philadelphia – Chabot 30) Arizona - Roslovic 31) Buffalo - Carlsson

Second best player behind Guryanov. Does the Russian factor move Svechnikov down the board? Well thought out Mock Draft though. I like Marner better than anyone else after Eichel and McDavid but the Coyotes have a strong need for big centers and I could see them taking Strome and may even surprise with Zacha.
-
are there people who would actually be disappointed if Edmonton took Eichel? Eichel may be the best prospect since Crosby but McDavid could be the best prospect since Lemieux.
-
why not wait till 51?
-
In the Hockey Writers Scenario I would be disappointed the Sabres took Sprong over Svechnikov. Nice thing about it is that Samsonov and Guryanov would be there at 31. Im thinking both are 1st rounders.
-
how does a draft board differ from rankings?
-
You are definitely being bold with Andersson that is your 11th ranked prospect - the highest I've seen him is at 31 on Craig Buttons list -DraftBuzz and McKeens has him lower than 65th. I saw him play 3 times with Lemiuex was property of the Sabres. I do remember one really nice play defending against Justin Bailey otherwise didnt really stand out to me. from Future Considerations: smart, multi-situational defender. ability to QB power Play by making good reads, hard passes and even harder shot. He lacks speed and was unable to keep up with many OHL forwards.needs to use positional play to compensate for lack of speed. and Eichel over McDavid?? I LOVE Eichel and im super excited for him to be a Sabre but there is no way he is can be ranked higher than McDavid.
-
Kessle is all about speed. What happens to his speed and explosiveness if he continues down the path of not working out and eating donoughts. He is already chubby and will only put on more weight. newtons law: F = m a So the more force you supply, the more acceleration you get. But the same equation tells us that a = F / m, so the more massive an object, the less it will be accelerated by a force of the same size or said another way: the fatter Phil gets the slower he becomes and the he becomes a less productive hockey player. Maybe we started to witness this law this past season?

a blog about Kylington - Doesn't change my opinion of him. If it was a skating competition, i'm sure he would be a top 10 pick. His poor play, especially defensive zone mistakes makes me want to stay clear of him in round 1. Even if the Sabres trade down to late first round there will be better options. http://flamesnation.ca/2015/6/8/flames-first-round-targets-2015-oliver-kylington

its a chance to find a high end winger. The guys at 21 are good players but he has a chance to be elite. The Sabres are the one team that have enough prospects that if one decides never to play in NHL (doubtful with current state of KHL) it won't be a huge loss.
-
im with you on Zacha if he drops out of the top 10. My gut tells me he will go around 7 and out of reach for the Sabres. Im sticking with Guryanov at 21 for the Sabres too much skill and talent to pass up- maybe they should start a rumour that he is headed to the KHL and pick him at 31? from the USA today: As Red Line Report's chief scout sat in the stands last month in Switzerland at the World Under-18 Championships, he watched the action on the ice during Russia's games and then studied our rankings from the April issue. And the obvious jumped out at him: We had broken our own long-standing rule about ranking prospects only based on their merits as players. That, as we have viewed it, is the only real function of a truly independent scouting service. So looking at our rankings of several Russians — specifically Denis Guryanov, Ilya Samsonov, Nikolai Chebykin, and Kirill Kaprizov — we realized that subconsciously, we had artificially downgraded their actual talent level because of the "Russian factor." Well, no more. Back to our guiding principle. Therefore, we have adjusted those players' rankings significantly this month to reflect our true beliefs. And that means, first of all, that Guryanov is up to No. 8 overall - because if his last name were Smith and he had played this season in the Ontario Hockey League, there's no way he wouldn't be a top 10 pick. Denis Guryanov (Lada Togliatti): Has the hardest, and best, shot of anyone in the draft. No question in our minds that he's a top 10 overall talent.

id rather watch paint dry than watch let alone pay attention to baseball but that's beside the point. Im just saying that you are setting yourself up for disappointment if you are going to put a play-off run on a team who's top 2 centers under this scenario would have played a total of 9 NHL games. Its good you have optimism and I hate being Debbie Downer - just don't be upset if the team ends up around 75 to 80 points but take a huge step forward over the last two seasons. I also agree with Button that this off-season the Sabres should do NOTHING. I don't need to see them trade assets for O'Reilly who has 1 year left on his contract and would project to a #2 center long term. Sabres already have Reinhart and Girgensons to add to Eichel as top 3 centers long term for them. I'd like for them to sit back give all the kids 1 more season, figure out who is going to be here long term and who they can afford to trade. I wouldn't even mind seeing Grigorenko in the top 3 this coming season with Samson in the minors. Maybe he can used as a trade chip next summer if he has a decent year - teams are always looking for a big, skilled winger. Hell, he may even turn himself into a contender for long term 2nd line center long term and move Samson to the 3 slot, and Girgensons to the wing. Off-season game plan - sign a Chris Stewart type RW, a depth D and a goalie. Unless an opportunity comes up to trade for an elite winger comes up again, like it did with Kane, then I sit back as GM and let my high-end Scotch Whiskey age for another year.
-
I completely agree with Button when he said "if you think the Sabres will be a play-off team next year the only person you are kidding is yourself"
-
