Yikes that was 30 years ago. Time flies.

Back then, each existing club was permitted to protect one goaltender, five defensemen and nine forwards. 😯

What the Panthers did was a minor miracle. They were a 92 point team who got hot at the right time. If I’m not mistaken, the Panthers haven’t won a playoff series since that 1995 run until last year’s Cup final run.

That team had a lot of notoriety for having something like 10 or 12 former captains on its roster.

Tons of leadership.  Huh? What a concept.

I too would LIKE someone on the Sabres to have the ability to 'answer the bell' in those situations, but I don't care that much.  There are some who lement fighting leaving the league and some who don't need it at all. Give me end to end hockey with goals, and I don't need it at all.

But it is what it is. I was watching the game last night and when the puck dropped, I didn't turn away form the TV. But for Rempe himself, something about him rubs me the wrong way.  A couple of dirty hits, doesn't seem to be going out of his way to avoid them.  Then he gets in fights...some are a draw, some he losses, and yet he seems to always want to skate by the opponents bench and say something or salute the crowd after a fight. Its like man, you got in a fight you didn't win...the reason you got in that fight is because you dirty hit someone, and after that fight you are going to go yapp at the opponents bench on the way off the ice?  To me, not cool.

Rempe quickly embraced the Heel persona.  The whole league is going to hate him in no time.

Reeves didn’t have a heel persona when the league was ripe with heavyweights.  He was more a middleweight or light heavy and knew it wouldn’t do well.  Since the heavyweight became extinct Reeves found he could get away with being an ass.  Rempe is right there in his footsteps.  He’d better learn to fight tactically soon cuz there are several guys that are more than willing and able to give him a beating.

My yards backs to woods.  We have mice and other critters to deal with.   I have found a few mice getting into my garage, several times they got into my AC unit and ate wires, one time I found traces that indicate they got in the basement - had to fix their entry points and put traps out.

Solution:  Feral and stray cats.   The past few years cats have been on the prowl, they come from the same wooded area.   I pick them up on my outdoor cameras and watch them on patrol.   The result, no signs of mice anywhere.   They avoid people and are hardly ever spotted during daylight.

I have seen four cats in total, three look to be feral but one has a collar and roams with them.  No complaints from me regarding these cats.

They aren’t your cats, so they aren’t your responsibility. I don’t want my dog killing your daughter’s pet, and that is the gist of my complaint.

  4. Peopel who let their cats roam the neighborhood.

My dog has an extremely high prey drive.  She’s managed to get half a dozen squirrels and a woodchuck last Summer alone.

She’s almost caught 2 cats in the backyard as well. One particular cat keeps coming back occasionally.  Last week (where was the complaint thread last week?) I let her out not realizing the cat was in our fully vinyl fenced backyard.  Dog caught the cat in a corner and there was a brief altercation.  Cat managed to uncorner itself and was able to escape under our fence gate.  No idea if the cat was hurt or not.  I hope not.  She did get a good cut on the dog.  Fortunately no vet needed to heal it up.

Ive seen the cat in our backyard twice since.  Apparently, lesson not learned.

I really, really don’t want someone’s pet to get hurt.  Or worse. If you won’t keep your cat where it is safe and healthy, don’t own a ***** cat, please.

Maybe, but the conversation I’m trying to have is about this summer, not last summer.

Is starting the season with Luukkonen (by this season’s numbers a good starter) and Levi (by this season’s numbers an average backup) a problem in need of an active solution?

Running the goalie situation back is inherently risky.  Given the state of this franchise, I think it is resources well spent to de-risk it.

Why should it be considered a problem?

This part wasnt tactically played well.

“How many proven NHL backups will be interested in coming here knowing what the Sabres feel about Levi?”

We had an unproven guy that was publicly given the keys to the team, and one of the challenges became, noone will sign on with him here.

The GM flat out played the goalie situation poorly.

Nothing odd about introducing the chance of rain five days out but only a short time after an event expected to draw many people to the area? Any weather forecaster will tell you you can't be that specific so far out.

The forecast discussion page on the NWS site is literally just that, a discussion.  Sometimes the forecasters contradict each other based on their reading of the model ouputs.  There was a meteorologist that retired last year, I think, that was particularly open in his discussions.

    That is a nerd page.

There needs to be some acknowledgement that the context to this debate has shifted since last summer.

I loosely defined "backup" as goalies who have played 15-35 games this year

    • Devon Levi ranks 18th in SV%, and 20th in GAA

I defined "starter" as goalies who have played more than 35 games.

    • UPL ranks 12th and 8th

Overall, Luukkonen is 21st and 13th and Levi 47th and 49th out of 68 goalies.

Of course the question remains 'Yeah, but they're so young. Where's the track record?"

One response might be "Tell me who has a dependable track record?

Merzlikins, Korpisalo, Raanta, Vanecek, Husso, Allen, Gibson, Kahkonen, Vejmalka, Kuemper, Forsberg, Blackwood, Gustafsson, Mrazek, Jarry, Lankinen, Grubauer, Samsonov, Fleury...did any of these guys significantly outplay Levi this year?

    Or this:

    • .899 3.10
    • .900 2.86

One is Devon Levi, the other Andrei Vasilevskiy

Ideally, I want a proven NHL backup who Levi will clearly have to beat out to be in the NHL.

How much would we have to give up to acquire a goalie we "know" is going to be better than Levi?

How much are we willing to spend on a "just in case"?

How many proven NHL backups will be interested in coming here knowing what the Sabres feel about Levi?

It’s a problem of Buffalo’s creation. I think getting goalie depth right is a basic GM responsibility.  He’s on his third swing at it now.  VSTOL performance is required now.  The long runway is long gone.

  9. Noone thought Gretzky’s records could be broken.  I wanna see this one broken.  There is little that is more entertaining generally than a good record chase.  I’m not sure Ovie has 2 more good seasons in him to get it done.  His skating is rapidly leaving him.  But I’ll watch and hope just for the entertainment value.

Regarding the next player to break it, don’t underestimate Matthews.  That guy is a goal scoring machine.  If he keeps it up into his mid 30s he’ll be right there.

Crosby a legend. Weren't the Sabres close to getting him through the lottery? As in they did have high chances that year?

It would have been nice to get a generational forward with our number 1 picks in any of these past years. Sigh

Sabres had same lottery chances as P burgh that year.  I think there may have been a 3rd team as well, but not sure.

Judging from this Granato quote they have already decided Levi is good to go next season after not being so, this

Cross our fingers second time’s the charm!

Frustratingly high risk for a fanbase that has sat on the sidlines in April-May for 13 seasons.

Regarding the goalie situation AND the implied coaching situation.

Here I think is what we have going into next year

    XXX.       Tage   Tuch

    JJP.      Cozens.   Quinn

    Greenway.    XXX.   Benson

    Girgs.   Krebs.     XXX

    Skinner

    Robinson

    -----

3 positions to be filled , either by trade or UFA

I’m sure we’d see fresh, new kids in those roster spots if they become available.

Punch is spot on. With no infusion of capable veterans this team will flounder. I’ve heard countless talking heads say the same. You can’t draft and develop without augmenting the lineup with outside help in the form of veteran experience. This roster is top heavy with people who have never experienced what it takes to get into the playoffs. Skinny is one example. Close to 1000 games without a spot in the show. Scuttle that guy. Build a proper team Terry or f**k off.

I’ve been beating that drum since Jack was drafted.  It’s the only form of team building they haven’t tried yet.

    Hmmm……
