Detroit is irrelevant.  The Sabres are 9 points behind Tampa, 7 behind NYI, 4 points behind Washington.  Washington has 3 games in hand and are 7-2-1 in their last 10; NYI have 2 games in and and are also 7-2-1 in their last 10.  The Sabres are 6-3-1.  Even if they catch the Wings, there's no way they're going to catch two of those three.

Mathematically still possible but it would require epic chokes by two of those three teams, not to mention continued losing by the Devils and Wings.

And that has been pointed out since Christmas.  The real hurdle isn’t Detroit. It is ALL of the teams we need to leapfrog.  Outpacing one team that you are X points behind is one thing.  Outpacing 3 or 4 teams is highly unlikely.

The only thing I don't really get is why did we send down Ryan Johnson and why bring up Jost/Clague who arent going to be a part of this core going forward? Why not bring up Kulich and Kozak instead? Getting NHL experience for Johnson should be much more important than helping Rochester Americans win games correct? Or am I blowing this out of porportion?

Kulich and Kozak aren’t ready for the NHL.  Tyson Jost can handle it without getting crushed.

Free agency is silly season.  GMs handing out big contracts to players who in no way shape or form deserve the overpayment they receive.  I’d rather trade for someone actually good.

    We got Matt Irwin?  Really!!??!

and I see there was a good squabble and some name calling along the way so that might be a performance bonus extra.

I suppose ultimately KA was a really big fan of the 2021 Canadian World Junior team and wants as much of that roster as he can get. We now have 5 members of that team, I wonder if that's a record?

    I hope they won gold…..

My point is the entire forum seems to be not much but complaints so we can just change the topic of this thread and put all the sabres talk in here.

Boo.   This thread is about life.

I have lots to complain about. Not going to do it, though.

I’m holding back.  February has sucked.  Death, illness, injury, overwhelmed at work.

Repeat after me. Its all temporary.

  6. Just last season, Stephen Stamkos said in an interview that “the NHL is an 85% league”.  Context being, players pace themselves so they are ready to give maximum effort in the playoffs.

So the arguments above are wasted energy. It doesn’t matter your opinion, or how you feel it should be.  A star player has come out and stated reality.  Players don’t give 100% during the regular season so the they have 100% to give in the playoffs.

Unless you are the Sabres.  They are saving it for the golf course.

I'm all for this trade, but something to consider, Experience on defense seems to have gotten VERY important the last few years in the NHL:

Top 5 teams in the league this year right now, age of their top 4 D-mean they rely on:

    -Florida  (29, 27, 28, 32).....ave: 29, youngest 27

    -Vancouver (24, 26, 34, 35)...ave 29.75, youngest 24

    -Boston (26, 30, 27, 30)....ave 28.25, youngest 26

    -Winnipeg (28, 30, 28, 33)....ave 29.75, youngest 28

    -NY Rangers (26, 24, 30, 28)...ave 27, youngest 24

And Vegas as the cup winner last year (34, 28, 33, 36)....ave 32.75, youngest 28

    Now for Buffalo...with Byram, Dahlin, Power, and Samuelsson: (23, 21, 23, 22)....ave 22.25.  OLDEST 23

Buffalo's OLDEST D-man is younger than the youngest on the top 5 teams this year, and of course the AVERAGE age of Buffalo's new top 5 is less than the single youngest guy on any of the teams above.

Sabres are gonna be AWESOME in 2030.

Green agree button if in the past you mocked Mitts for not being able to do a pull-up or how useless he was and are now in this thread dumping on this trade.

I'm curious how many will self-identify.

The purpose is only to demonstrate that what we think in one moment may be completely turned around in the future.  Deep breaths.

What about, wrote him off early, bagged on him for not meeting the hype, accepted that he’s evolved into a good middle 6 player, but is agnostic about this trade?  What button is that?

I’m not asking you to. I’m not asking you to be pessimistic.

There’s an arguable position wherein one says, well, this makes our team likely a bit worse next season, but likely better long term. I hate it, but it’s there. It doesn’t need to be “to avoid a payday”. This is a good faith discussion

    Ahhhhh…..

I have no idea, lol.  The potential is there for it to be either.  Need to see what else comes.

Of course. My question is, does the deal in KA’s mind help facilitate a better team next season? Or does it help facilitate a better team down the line

I only care about the former. Literally

I can’t get to, Casey was traded solely to avoid a payday.  At least not yet, lol.

Cash spent at center may certainly be a factor, but there has to be a plan that involves boosting the team overall.  At least, I think there has to be.

I am holding out hope that this is move 1 of 3 or 4 moves through draft day that that retools the team.

This is exactly it. Team building.

We are at that point. It’s not about the long term cap or long term success or this guy’s potential. What does it do for the team, right now. Is the likelihood we make the playoffs next season greater, or lesser, because of this deal? It’s the only factor that matters to me, the solitary bit that is not noise

It seems to Me that we can’t take this trade in a vacuum.  There has to be alot more to the plan.
