Effectively this is the first full generation of the post-radio only broadcast style. RJ, Cole, Foley, Doc Emeric, among many others were either Radio-announcers or were direct protégés to them and modeled their calls to a degree off them. Most announcers nowadays have zero radio-only experience or if they do were meant purely as secondary broadcasts. The artistry of radio announcing going to TV was a very lucky combination of radio going way to TVs and teams keeping their announcers.

That also is partially due to the old guard all retiring practically. Most new age announcers aren’t truly play by play guys but more or less narrators who occasionally trail off on tangents.

I know people hate Dunleavy but I have no issue with him on TV. He’s not great but not terrible. When radio only though he’s really bad; I can’t follow anything when on the radio. Part of this truly is being spoiled by most the team’s history broadcast history being done by legends

Frankly that game was about as fixed as you could get if you remember the absurdity of some of the calls/non-calls that went down. Plus all of those milestones by Crosby and Malkin being hit on national TV seemed too good to be purely a case of the Pens being better.
