Given how sluggish we’ve often looked coming off long breaks in the past, I was a bit leery going into this game thinking it would take the team a while to find their game. But we have looked sharp right from opening puck drop. These guys were ready. What a difference a focused group of players and a good coaching staff makes.

I’ve heard several stories from people at both the arena and PSE offices over the years. Suffice to say that while we had several high character players who genuinely tried to impact the culture in positive ways, there were also several who were there just to collect a check and didn’t give a crap otherwise and that was reflected in how they treated people around the building. As a result, KA and Co. do deep dives on everyone they’re considering bringing into the organization. I’m talking references from everyone from coaches to billet families to wait staff at various local hangouts.

I would also add that with the exception of MacKinnon, none of the other players listed would be able to provide what Cozens does for the Sabres as an all around player. Additionally, he is 22 years old who is still ascending as a player and is several years away from his prime while those players are fully baked.

I don’t know if he adopted the TB12 method, but he is a fitness freak; totally dedicated to being in peak form. Diet, exercise regimen, yoga, meditation, etc. He would routinely ride his bike to and from the arena and I believe he still holds the club record for pull-ups at 33. At 6’9” and 250 lbs plus and a seven foot wing span. That is insane.

I understand all that. As far as making a move just to try to get us in, it depends on the cost for the player involved and whether or not he’s just a rental. But this team, even with its worts, is knocking on the door as is, so I’m not convinced we need all that much anyway. And I’d rather spend the assets on a player that can actually help us make a longer playoff run and not just help us get to a point to be abused early on. I hope these guys can take a lesson from tonight, too. Chiefly, that they shouldn’t confuse effort with results.

Barometer game failure. It’s all well and good that we are competing for a low playoff spot and I can appreciate that measure of improvement over prior years, but we are light years away from the likes of the Carolinas of the league. Which is why I don’t want KA to sell any part of the farm on a deal for a player who isn’t gonna be able to get us much closer to the league’s elite teams. This is another one of those “monkey off the back games.” Canes have had our number for a while now and we have to turn the tide. Great opponent, national tv, and a playoff spot on the line. No better time to announce our arrival.

That’s a given as cultural and societal values and norms evolve. But the human emotion behind it all, the reason we ostracize others, never does. Your point about what was once acceptable and common is an interesting one. I have a hunch that what was once acceptable to some never was to others at the time. And it took many “woke” progressive movements to move forward societally. There are numerous examples throughout history. One could argue that our very creation as a nation was the result of a “woke” movement. Nothing new under the sun as the saying goes.

Someone says or does something unpopular and said someone is then “cancelled.” That is the same “standard” that has existed since the first tribal banishment, shunning, excommunication, etc. Modern mass communication abilities and the rapidity with which this info can be disseminated is not relevant to the cause, which is nothing more than the same, age-old human emotion that seeks retribution against an individual or group that has said or done something we find offensive. “Wokeness” and “cancel culture” are simply nothing new.
