This isn't a hire for the hardcore fans like us. It's a hire for the next level on the pyramid of Buffalo hockey fans.

Not the guy I would have picked, but if I'm honest with myself his resume probably ticks a lot of boxes if his name wasn't Lindy Ruff and this wasn't the Buffalo Sabres.

I suspect he's going to flame out spectacularly.

But I'm going to go with the way @Thorny is reacting because if I squint really hard I can kinda see it, and giving the latest move a chance is just the way I roll.

    Now where's my Scotch?

I’m not convinced there is a right hire for that group.

It doesn’t sound like the Penguins are going to fire Sullivan (from the Athletic):

“• Dubas praised the coaching staff and said the Penguins’ issues were his fault but also stopped short of saying the entire coaching staff will be retained. Rather, Dubas said he will discuss the staff with head coach Mike Sullivan before any final changes are made.”

Or maybe the Penguins’ issues start with them all being 95 years old.

Pearl Jam released their new full length album today, called Dark Matter. I like it so far.

I keep getting interrupted as I try to listen. I’ve heard bits and pieces of it out of order.

I brought this up in the past, but I’ll drop it here again. Accountability is this amorphous term that people throw around that means something different in everyone’s head.

No one ever defines what they think it means, what that actually looks like in practice, and how it would manifest itself in an exact situation that happened.

I tried to be clear on what that means to me. I want the guy who wants to work to be better as opposed to the guy who cries out for help. There’s nothing wrong with asking for help, it just doesn’t do any good doing so in a press conference.

I think that the biggest single message coming out of the locker room is “this was on us”.

Whether they think it needs to come from within the room, within themselves, or both, they all want a higher bar of accountability set for themselves and those around them.

Whether that’s a reason for hope or a scathing indictment is going to be in the eye of the beholder.

    Don’t take it personally.

Accountability was the first word to immediately come to mind as I opened this thread. Even if players do want some veteran leadership brought in, I don’t want to hear them say it. I want to hear exactly what is said here, “we need to step up”. Adding and players stepping up, the two aren’t mutually exclusive,  it there’s only one side that a player can take care of.

I doubt it's as common as you suggest. Mainly because there are very few situations like the Coyotes in history. And it still boils down to owners fighting owners and does a league condone that?

For example, what if it came out that Jon Bon Jovi funded grassroots groups fighting the construction of a new Bills stadium? How would you feel if he was allowed to move the Bills to Toronto as a result?

It’s not owners fighting owners because one guy is an owner and the other is not. The roles are about to flip, but again, it still isn’t two owners. And I’m not just talking specifically about arena deals. There is going to be plenty of backstabbing going on within each of the leagues. Hell, look who the NFL had been willing to work with for so long.

Maybe. But does a league want to condone such subterfuge? The Coyotes are going from market #12 to #34 because the Jazz owner helped sink an arena deal.

I’m willing to bet that we could find an unending list of things like this happening over the years. They’re not losing any sleep over it with their billion dollar deal.

Lindy Ruff to me seems like the low hanging fruit TP would sign off on, with the goal to appease a restless disinterested fan base. I can see that conversation playing out & hiring Lindy on its own would raise some local interest. From the wording of today's Presser, it doesnt sound like we're hiring from within & thank the Gods for that. They emphasized how they want someone with real experience, but i also have zero faith we'll hire a Gallant level HC. So that leaves Lindy & for obvious reasons i think thats exactly what we'll do. Lindy would at least hold the players accountable & that in & of itself might be worth it. But i'd be all for a Brindamour, Gallant or even Torts.

I’m not on the Ruff bandwagon but I have to ask. Your wording above to me sounds like you’re putting Gallant on a level above Ruff (if that’s not right, ignore rest). I’m just not seeing that from their resumes. I thought, ok, maybe age is a factor but Lindy is only 4 months later. Gallant does have a very slightly higher points percentage, but he spent very little time coaching pre-shoot out, which I think washes out that difference.

The ego is bigger than the thought of security.  It's what draws all (most?) college coaches to the professional ranks.  The thought of being the best in a larger pond.  Rather than the security of status quo.  This guy has unheralded success at such an early age not sure what to expect.  Quinn jumped in his early 50's right?

Quinn bounced around for a while until he got what could have been the life job. He was replacing a legend, so it’s definitely a special case.

Carle has pretty much never left Denver since he started school. So that’s pretty much half his life at this point. So maybe he does know the feel of being a lifer. The Hakstol one is a much better comparable, 15 or so years with the Sioux.

But whatever, I’d say the Adams presser makes it obvious they won’t be talking to Carle.

For those who keep saying "There are only 32 NHL HC jobs in the world you always take it if offered".

David Carle is saying exactly what I have in this thread, that for some coaches the right opportunity is more important than the next opportunity.

He’s in a special spot where he could probably have a job for life if he wants it. I’m not sure how many of those situations exist anymore. Quinn and Hakstol left similar spots within the last 10 years and I wonder if they regret it at all, bouncing around every 3 years or so. Carle is so young though. I wonder how much a 34 year old thinks about being a lifer.

Picks in the 20s most often are Roslovics and Whites, so no.

Look, GMTM was a ***** manager. No one in his right mind would support his tenure and I'm not aware of anyone who does.

But his biggest failing was people: the types he chose for his organization, and how he treated them.

The number of prospects he "squandered" is overrated.

Im not sure why that is overrated. It looks like it is exactly what you are saying. He spent $10 for what should have cost $5, just like Botterill sold stuff for $5 that should have cost $10.

I’m not sure what the point of captain hindsight game is. The value of the pieces 10 years later doesn’t not outweigh the value of the pieces at the actual time of the trade.

Two: Colin White and Jack Roslovic.

    Still taking O'Reilly.

Hindsight is a fun thing. You wouldn’t take that stance before the trades happened. Back at that point shouldn’t all of those pieces landed you 2 or 3 Ryan O’Reillys?

Are they both on expiring contracts? It's not public, but if you look at dates joined, it's entirely plausible.

It’s amazing how not a single person has listened to you. We’d rather complain and assume the worst instead. I would have thought that their contract status would have been the very first thing to come to mind when they weren’t included.

And as for the Lindy crowd out there: Lindy Ruff would be the best Sabres coach since Lindy Ruff.
