If its under 7mil with 5 or fewer years, you match it and in a year revisit it. If they offer anything in the 2 1sts/4 1sts range rhen you let him go and use the added assets to create a trade elsewhere The only team I might let take Byram at the 1&3 level is SJS. Then you just trade the lower of 2 1sts next year and get a more effective player

It's 2 years to becoming a UFA. Only IF the ages &/or service years to achieve UFA status change with the new CBA would he only have 1 year until becoming a UFA. There has been absolutely ZERO reports that the age/years of service to reach UFA status have changed with the new CBA. Soooo, he is 2 years away from becoming a UFA. 100% you match at $7MM or less.

Are we good with paying Byram $9 for one year? Also, these guys think Byram is a UFA in one year. Is it one or two?

Our strength was in futures and we cashed it out to near-non existent results and a below-average roster. What we are left with is like you say an average pipeline, with various strengths and weaknesses, with almost no confidence in their ability to turn that into much of anything this go around when it’s a worse overall organization starting point than last time. My solution? I’m converting the strength to where it should be: converting the below average roster and average pipeline into an average roster with a below average pipeline. 1) winning needs to be the focus, in the now (even just for the sake of salvaging the future!) 2) we will be wanting to work on rehabilitating our pipeline anyways so weakening it some before we do so isn’t the end of the world and if we are better in the now we’ll have the time to do so like I said, keeps coming back to one thing: this team is woefully short at LEAST one futures for current trade. Reconfigure. Bump the roster up to average. Be 16th/32: make the playoffs

I think what we are feeling is the hangover of having such a rich selection of prospects this time three years ago and few of them hitting the way we had hoped. We now have a more typical group of prospects and wonder if the previous group didn't do anything how the hell will these guys?

It’s a pretty simple process: Adams need only scour the market, and if there’s a market for futures for forwards, keep Byram. If the futures for D market is stronger, and it’s going to be hard to find an available forward, deal Byram for the player and, do your D futures trade and it’s 2 transactions instead of one. It’s really a simple, two-pronged approach. Quite simple. So it will take a miracle, definitely

Rational, and offers a bit of hope; seems like it would take a near miracle for even this to happen.

Also 2x the forwards play so 20-16 isn’t a good ratio anyways

I’d be good with this provided we then package futures for a d-man with the ability to play top 4 - even if it’s sans Byram upside. At least that way we are still seeing one outright upgrade on roster. (Peterka essentially swapped for Holloway, but Byram out the door and 2 new D-men brought in, Kesselring and the one we traded the futures for.) I say “good with it” but realistically was thinking we needed at least one unquestioned upgrade and both F and D. But, at least we’d have something. Imo the rub is that we need to make at least one futures trade: be it for the D man after trading Byram for Holloway in this scenario, or somehow for a F if we keep Byram. Benson - Kulich - Thompson Holloway - Norris - Tuch Zucker - McLeod - Quinn Greenway - Krebs - Doan ..is back to reasonable, provided Dahlin - Futures trade Power - Kesselring Samuelsson - Timmins Kesselring would be an outright upgrade on our second pair and I’d look at this roster and say it’s improved on paper from last year by a bit. Not close to enough, but not as flabbergasting

The Sabres are on record as thinking he will be worse than Radim Mrtka. It will be interesting to see how that quote ages.

Can’t argue, haven’t seen him play. But he played 25 NHL games for a coach named Lindy Ruff, who used to use Andrew Peters 5 minutes a night, 50-odd games a year. He now coaches a team that has a reputation for not being able to handle the rough stuff, has no one like that in their system, and just signed Geertsen to a contract. I have a feeling we’re going to see this guy this year. What you predict, or what you prefer?

Oh I wish I could be but not any more. There's just nothing. They have botched this rebuild (if you start with Eichel, Reinhart, Risto trades as the starting point) so badly I don't see a fix. Now I think the only thing that can save this franchise is Terry giving up, handing the team over to his kid and retiring to Florida. She fires everybody and lets Jarmo start a new rebuild as GM with full authority to hire whoever and he cleans house and moves out the entire roster and we just start again like an expansion team. Clean slate. Actual NHL people running the thing. Can't be any worse.

Would Holloway or Byfield become our 1C? They gotta be a better option than Kulich, right? But then Kulich can slide over to wing?
