Haven't heard this mentioned...

All the articles I'm reading about the upcoming Buf-Car series

say how similar these two teams are. Both coaches are

towing this line too.

But I haven't heard any of these (unable to check the facts?)

"reporters" saying that the Sabres are significantly younger

than the Canes. The Canes have 13 people on the roster over

30 and the Sabres have 3.

Also the Canes payroll is higher and they have significant

investments in Doug Weight ($5.7 mil/yr), Rod Brind'Amour

($3.8), Bret Hedican (2.4), Tverdosky ( 2.5) and

Recchi (2.2). The Sabres only pay Drury (2.9), Biron (2.1)

and Numinen(2) upwards of 2 mil.

Also their starting goalie in the regular season, Gerber,

got his head handed to him the first two games against

the Canadians, and we've stuck with ours.

I think Staal (980K) and Miller (500K) will be due a

big pay raise.

I think that age and conditioning will be a factor here.

Unfortunately though, The Sabres haven't exactly proven themselves very durable, in spite of their youth.

I stopped counting injuries to key personnel in mid-April.

However, I find it remarkable how this team has fared with key players sidelined repeatedly, basically since November.

I'd say ~1/3 of the injuries are due to blocking pucks...

i think that this teams shows its not all about playoff experiance or cup experiance to win games... they play together with no man being bigger then the next. i love the fact the sabres have no "marquee" players because it keeps everyone humble...id take this TEAM over any one player...with that being said, i think the age factor may play a role if we have an extended series, whcih is very possible

What about Cup experience? How many Cane's on this year's team were on the Cup Team from a few years ago?

A quick perusal shows 6 non-injured guys that dressed for most all the playoff games in '02 (Brind'amour, Wesley, Adams, Hedican, Ward, and Wallin). Craig Adams was also on the '02 team but only played in 1 playoff game. Cole was also on the '02 team.

WAITTTTTTTTTTTT!

So we only have Drury Vanek and Hecht signed for next year????

I don't remember the exact numbers, but we were in a similar situation before this season. It's not going to be much of a problem, other than the defensemen.

From another message board:

Eastern Conference Cap figures going into next year:

NJ: $19.925M, 11 Players, this does not include McGillis, who will be in the minors, and does not include what they might have to pay in buyout costs to Mogilny & Malakhov. With buyout costs it is $23.43M

NYR: $21.746, 12 players. This does include Ozolinsh, Derek, since it looks like they may not be able to buy him out (or they may not actually want to). But if he is still technically 'injured' as of June 30 they can't buy him out.

Flyers: $30.15M, 14 players. This is going to decrease a bit, since Forsberg will be out for half the season. But that's what is currently on the books including Primeau which could go as well if he retires.

NYI: $19.381M, 7 players. Good, lord, shouldn't they just buy out Ca$hin???

Pens: $15.6086M, 14 players

Sens: $17.4413M, 8 players

Habs: $22.903M 10 players

Leafs: $24.586, 12 players w/out Belfour option. $29.108M, 13 players w/Belfour option. None of this includes a possible ruling against them in the Nolan case.

Sabres: $6.144M, 3 players I like this one, I can't figure out whether it is good or bad for them

Bruins: $18.8505, 10 players

Florida: $18.6144, 12 players

'Canes: $18.09044M, 11 players

TB: $26.1278, 11 players (it is 12 contracts, 11 players, they say they will honor the Andreychuck contract in full so it stays)

Atlanta: $27.8397, 11 players. This may be higher, because I'm hearing rumors that they went to the cap limit this year with salary and their bonus clauses (they did have bonus eligible players) took them over...the rule is that if you go over because of the bonuses it gets applied against the next year's cap amount.

Caps: $12.0342, 8 players, this does include Kolzig who did sign.

Here's that roster. As you can see, several leaders from that team -- Francis, O'Neill, Kapanen, Gelinas, Battaglia, Irbe, Barrasso -- are gone. Brind'Amour, Aaron Ward, Wallin, Kevyn Adams, Vasicek, Cole (the last two aren't even playing) are still around. Even their coach (Maurice) is gone.

I do know that they have just one guy with a ring and that's Recchi, who earned two in his first two years in the league with Pittsburgh. Yes, Brind'Amour, no rings. Yes, Weight, no rings.
