How well did teams do with drafting in the 4th round?

As anyone with eyes could see, for the 5th, 6th and 7th round, the Buffalo Sabres did no worse, and no better than the majority of teams. So they didn’t “under perform” or "over perform" compared to a lot of teams. It would have been nice to hit on a couple 5th rounders, but the majority of the teams didn’t either.

Who’s had NHL time? So i took a 10 year sample. From 2008 - 2017. In my opinion it’s too soon to judge anyone drafted in the 4th round in 2018 or more recently to determine if a team drafted well in the 4th. If you disagree, then post the more recent years if you want. I added the Buffalo picks (if there are any) just to see the names. And yes, i am well aware that this round is also pretty much a crap shoot, but i think there’s no harm in giving a little credit to the teams.

No surprise, the majority of teams didn’t “hit” on players in this round. It would have been nice to grab two or three guys in this round, but most teams i’m sure felt that way too.

Washington did well with two goalies in this round. Calgary with Gaudreau.

@Zamboni, once again thanks for doing the research and making this list. I know it’s about to get exponentially more time-consuming as for rounds 3, 2, and 1, but I hope you continue with the series.

It's super-rare to get a top skater (Gaudreau) and it's possible to get a good NHL goalie (Holtby, Grubauer, Shesterkin). But it would appear once per decade a team should be nailing a bottom-6 forward or bottom-4 defenseman who carves out a really solid NHL career (who can also bounce up the lineup for a few seasons). We got ours with Foligno, and hopefully again soon with Borgen or Bryson or Pekar.

There's a good list of players here at forward and defense who've made significant contributions to their team (including some playoff heroics) or project to continue to do so.
Forward: Weise, Nyquist, Cizikas, C. Smith, Foligno, Gaudreau, Donskoi, Pageau, Rieder, Anderson, Paquette, Athanasiou, Wood, Copp, Arvidsson
Defense: Brodie, Ekholm, Vatanen, Slavin, Toews

Of note, the Sabres trend with this pick is how often the 4th has been traded away. And look no further than this year where we packaged our 4th to move up to get JJ Peterka. And... as the WJCs are ongoing right now and Peterka looks great --- yes, make that trade everyday of the week.
