NHL Moving Awards Show to Vegas

The NHL will indeed be taking their annual awards ceremony from downtown Toronto to the Las Vegas Strip.

A league source tells ESPN.com that plans are now coming into focus for the awards show to make its first visit to Las Vegas on June 18, shortly after the end of the Stanley Cup playoffs and before the NHL draft in Montreal.

The ceremony is expected to be hosted by the Palms Casino and Resort.

Along with the show itself, former NHL greats Pat LaFontaine and Luc Robitaille will put together teams for a celebrity charity hockey game.

Poor choice IMO. Maybe moving a team to Las Vegas does has a lot of positives but the awards show? How many hockey fans will get into hockey due to the awards show? Are the awards show even telecasted on US TV besides the NHL Network? Some events, i think should be kept in hockey markets only. Winter Classics and the awards show are two of them. I dislike Toronto as anyone, but they have a huge fanbase who knows hockey like a religion. They always fill the theater or where ever they host the awards and appriciate it. Who will care about it in Vegas ?

We shall see i guess.

Let the "expansion" and the "who is going to get relocated" replies begin!!! Sacarsm off

You got to think Phoenix Coyotes are the #1 candidate to move to Vegas. Wayne Gretzky. Young and promising team. Already in the western conference. Huge money issues.

I just hope they get the Panthers out of Miami. I try to watch their games, but there is seriously like 8k people at their game. Nobody cheers. They blast rap music over the PA. But my guess is Florida to Hartford.

Thanks for the heads up. Since I'm a ex-Buffalonian and a 10yr Vegas vet, I'll try to get some of my networking on this. Would they even have tickets for this, or is it strictly, League only people, etc??

I'll wear my Lalalalafontaine Jersey to it!!

I'd watch the PBA awards show if Scarlett Johansen was handing out the awards on her naked ass.

I'll drink to that.

Yep. The show used to be league- and invitation-only, but the league opened it up to the public around 10 years ago. (My timeline might be a little off, but it was somewhere around there, since we still lived in WNY at the time, and we moved out of NYS in 2001.) My wife and I went to the first year they sold tickets to the general public. It was fun but long, and afterwards we got to get some autographs and shook hands with a couple of the award winners.
